A split shipment is one purchase delivered in multiple packages or at different times instead of arriving in one consolidated shipment. Your order can remain a single purchase even when a merchant fulfills it in separate groups. For shoppers, that can mean more than one tracking number; for merchants, it means coordinating inventory, shipping, and updates for each package.
Why did my order arrive in separate packages?
A merchant may split an order because its items cannot conveniently or promptly travel together. Common reasons include:
- Stock is in different locations. One warehouse may have one item while another warehouse or store has the rest.
- An item is a preorder or backorder. Available products can ship before a product that has not been released or replenished.
- Shipping or fulfillment rules differ. Products may have different shipping profiles, subscription requirements, or fulfillment constraints.
- The order is bulky or large. The items may require multiple packages for practical or safe handling.
- Items need different destinations or timing. A store may support sending gifts to different recipients or arranging separate delivery dates.
- A product needs customization. Personalized goods may take longer to prepare or ship from a different location.
For example, Shopify describes a cart with a green shirt at one location and a red shirt at another. Checkout can create a shipment for each location. Its guidance also describes splitting an order when an available product is purchased with a preorder item. These are examples of Shopify behavior, not rules that apply to every store or ecommerce platform. Shopify Help Center: Split shipping in Shopify Checkout
Examples of split shipments
Items stored at two warehouses
You order red and green shirts. Warehouse A has the green shirt, while Warehouse B has the red one. The merchant can send each shirt from the location that has it, creating two packages for one order.

An in-stock item and a preorder
You order two records, but one has not been released. The merchant may send the available record first and ship the preorder later, rather than holding everything until the release.
A bulky order
A large quantity may need more than one box because it will not fit safely or practically in a single package.
A gift order with different recipients
If the store supports separate destinations, items bought together may be delivered to different recipients. A shopper can also request separate timing when the merchant offers that option.

Can I get items from one order delivered separately?
Possibly. Whether you can choose separate deliveries depends on the store’s checkout options and fulfillment setup. Some stores split packages because of inventory or shipping constraints; others may let you choose a shipment method or destination for each group. Check the shipment details and delivery estimates at checkout, or contact the store if the order has already been placed. A merchant may not be able to change the fulfillment after processing has begun.

One order may produce separate shipment notices, tracking numbers, and arrival dates. Use each tracking link to see which package is moving; an order marked partially fulfilled may simply mean that one group has shipped while another is still being prepared.
If the order page does not make clear which products are in each package, ask the merchant to identify the items and provide the tracking details for the remaining shipment. Avoid assuming that a missing item was omitted until you have checked the order’s fulfillment status and delivery estimates.

How merchants should manage split shipments
1. Confirm inventory and fulfillment groups
Check which location can fulfill each item and whether the order system has already grouped items into separate fulfillments. This helps distinguish an intentional split from a stock or processing problem. Shopify’s documentation describes separate fulfillment sections for items that cannot be fulfilled together. Shopify Help Center: Fulfilling your own orders individually
2. Decide whether ready items should ship now
For a preorder or backorder, weigh the benefit of getting available items moving sooner against the additional shipping, packaging, and handling work. Consider the customer’s preference too: some shoppers value an earlier delivery, while others may prefer to wait for one consolidated arrival.

3. Set routing rules with the tradeoff in mind
When minimizing packages is appropriate, route orders toward a location that can fulfill most or all items, if doing so does not create an unreasonable delay or transfer cost. Shopify’s Smart Order Routing can use rules such as shipping from the closest location, staying within a destination market, minimizing split fulfillment, or using ranked locations. 4. Make shipping choices and charges understandable
Show the number of shipments, the items in each, the available shipping method, delivery estimate, and rate when the platform supports those details. In Shopify’s documented setup, charges may be combined for locations in the same location group or combined across groups; customers may be offered choices for each shipment. The result depends on the store’s configuration. Shopify Help Center: Split shipping in Shopify Checkout
5. Fulfill and track each group accurately
Handle separate fulfillment groups as separate packages. Add the correct tracking details to each fulfillment and send a notification when that package ships. Shopify also documents splitting a fulfillment by item or quantity and merging some fulfillments from the same location. Its broader fulfillment guide explains the order-fulfillment workflow. 6. Tell the customer what is coming and when
For each package, identify the items it contains, provide separate tracking when available, and give the expected timing. Clear updates help the shopper understand why an order may arrive in stages rather than treating a later package as a missing item.

When should a merchant consolidate shipments?
Consolidating can make sense when one suitable location has all the items and sending one package avoids extra work without delaying delivery. It is not always the best choice: holding ready products for a delayed item can make the customer wait, and separate destinations may make consolidation impossible.
Before choosing, compare the practical tradeoffs:
- Delivery speed: Will sending an available item now get it to the customer sooner?
- Total cost: Consider the shipping and handling for all packages, including extra processing, rather than comparing only one label rate.
- Inventory and location fit: Can one location fulfill the order, or would transferring stock add delay or expense?
- Customer clarity: Are shipment count, rates, and delivery estimates clear at checkout?
- Operational workload: Can the business track, notify, and reconcile each fulfillment accurately?
Inventory visibility and demand planning can help merchants avoid splits caused by preventable stock gaps. But reducing the number of packages should not be the only goal: the right choice depends on the order, the customer’s needs, and the cost of waiting versus shipping separately.
Shopify checkout: useful example, not a universal rule
Shopify Help Center says, “If a cart includes items which can’t be fulfilled in a single shipment, then fulfillment splits into multiple shipments.” Its checkout documentation covers cases such as products from different locations or shipping profiles, subscriptions, preorder items, and Buy with Prime products. A single flat charge can apply when locations are in the same location group; different location groups can produce combined charges, and the documented setup may offer shipping choices per shipment. Shopify Help Center: Split shipping in Shopify Checkout
Shopify also documents exceptions and configuration-specific behavior. Its split-shipping checkout is not eligible for some draft-order and B2B checkouts; the stated example does not support splitting the quantity of a single line item across multiple locations; local delivery can suppress the display of multiple shipments; and third-party shipping services may not show customer-selected shipping choices. Shopify notes that split shipping works differently for stores upgraded to shipping options by market. These limitations apply to the documented Shopify setup, not automatically to other platforms.

Costs and drawbacks to consider
More packages can mean additional logistics, labor, packaging, transport, and delivery work. They can also create more packaging waste and complicate return handling. The available cited guidance describes these as potential drawbacks, but does not establish a standard cost, emissions figure, return rate, or shopper-preference statistic for split shipments. Merchants should assess their own shipping rates, packaging, and fulfillment process rather than assume a universal financial or environmental impact.
