Spiro announced a $100 million investment round on October 21, 2025, including $75 million from the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA). Spiro called it the largest investment in African two-wheel electric mobility at the time; that is the company’s characterization, not an independently verified ranking or a claim about the largest raise today. The financing was intended to expand battery swapping and technology development. Subsequent announcements included separate debt and equity financings, so the amounts should not be treated as one reconciled cumulative total.

Who funded Spiro’s $100 million round?

Spiro’s October 21, 2025 announcement identified $75 million from FEDA, which the company described as the development impact investment arm of the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank). The release did not itemize the other participants in the $100 million round, so it does not establish who supplied the remaining amount. Spiro’s announcement

The release also said Spiro had raised more than $180 million in prior funding. That is a company-reported figure; the announcement does not reconcile it with the new round into a verified all-time funding total.

Spiro described the $100 million as the largest investment in African two-wheel electric mobility at that time. TechCrunch used the headline “Spiro raises $100M, the largest-ever investment in Africa’s e-mobility.” The superlative should be read as a description of the October 2025 announcement, not as proof of an independently audited ranking or of a record that still holds. What was the money intended to fund?

Spiro said the round would help expand battery-swapping infrastructure in existing and new markets and strengthen its technology platform. TechCrunch reported that the company also planned to support manufacturing capacity and research and development, with pilots in Cameroon and Tanzania. These were announced priorities, not confirmation that the projects had been completed.

At the time of the announcement, Spiro reported more than 60,000 motorcycles, over 1,200 swap stations, and more than 26 million battery swaps. Those are company background figures associated with the 2025 announcement, not independently verified measurements or a current operating snapshot.

How Spiro’s battery-swapping model works

Spiro’s model combines electric motorcycles with an energy network. Riders buy or lease a Spiro motorcycle, then exchange a depleted battery for a charged one at a company swap station. Rather than relying solely on charging the motorcycle at home or at a depot, the rider pays for the energy consumed through the service. TechCrunch described the model in its contemporaneous coverage of the funding round.

In that coverage, CEO Kaushik Burman estimated that Spiro motorcycles cost around $800 in Kenya or Rwanda, compared with $1,300–$1,500 for a typical new gasoline motorcycle, and that operating cost per kilometer was about 30% lower. These were Burman’s estimates as reported by TechCrunch, not independently verified or like-for-like price comparisons. They should not be generalized to other countries, dates, or models.

How the later funding announcements differ

Spiro made additional financing announcements in 2026. They have different dates and instruments, and the company’s description of the $270 million close does not establish a single reconciled cumulative total that includes every financing announcement.

Date Amount and type Named investors or participants Stated purpose or context
October 21, 2025 $100 million investment round $75 million attributed to FEDA; the rest of the participants were not itemized in the release Expand battery swapping in current and new markets and strengthen the technology platform; TechCrunch also reported manufacturing, R&D, and pilots in Cameroon and Tanzania.
February 2026 $50 million debt financing Afreximbank, Nithio, and Africa Go Green Fund Expand swapping and support automated swaps, fast charging, and renewable-energy integration. Spiro’s announcement
June 1, 2026 $215 million equity round The release cited Danish pension capital and other investors; see the company announcement for its named participants. Expand the network, industrial footprint, and technology development, and support market entry. Spiro said it operated in seven markets, with more than 100,000 electric motorcycles and over 2,500 swap stations. Spiro’s announcement
June 22, 2026 Additional $55 million; Spiro said this closed its “latest funding round” at $270 million NewTrails Capital Spiro’s announcement described the $55 million as an additional investment and said the latest round closed at $270 million. It does not establish whether that figure includes the separately announced debt financing. Spiro’s announcement

The labels matter: Spiro called the 2025 financing an investment round, explicitly described the February 2026 financing as debt, and called the June 1 financing an equity round. The later $55 million announcement used the phrase “latest funding round.” These figures cannot be added together as though they were interchangeable pieces of one fully reconciled total.

What the company’s reported operating figures do—and do not—show

Spiro’s June 2026 announcement reported more than 100,000 electric motorcycles and over 2,500 swap stations across seven markets. Those figures are company-reported and dated to that announcement; they should not be combined with the earlier 2025 fleet and station counts as if they were collected at the same time.

The same June release described a third-party lifecycle assessment of Spiro’s operations in Kenya. Spiro reported that the assessment found 72% lower climate impact than fossil-fuel motorcycles, approximately 19 tonnes of CO₂ avoided over a vehicle’s lifespan, an 80% reduction in ozone-depletion potential, and a 20% reduction in particulate-matter emissions. The company release did not name the assessor, so the figures are company-reported summaries of an assessment whose methodology and attribution cannot be evaluated from that release alone.

What the financing means for riders

The intended connection between the capital and the rider experience is straightforward: more swap infrastructure can make battery exchange more accessible, while technology investment may support the network and new charging approaches. But an announcement of intended spending does not establish where or when new stations will open, whether a pilot has launched, or how rider costs will change. The round is therefore best understood as financing for Spiro’s planned network and technology expansion, not as evidence that every planned benefit has already reached customers.
