Spirit planned to cut its fleet to 76–80 aircraft as part of a restructuring meant to reduce costs and focus on stronger-demand routes. That target was never a lasting operating fleet: on May 2, 2026, Spirit announced an immediate wind-down and cancelled all flights.
How many planes did Spirit plan to keep?
Spirit’s February 2, 2026 management plan proposed an alternative business plan with 76 aircraft by mid-August 2026—35 to 40 fewer than the 114-aircraft plan it used for comparison. In a March 13 restructuring announcement, Spirit set a target of 76–80 aircraft by the third quarter of 2026. These were proposals and targets, not completed fleet reductions. Spirit’s February plan and March announcement described the company’s intentions.
The headline’s “nearly 100” phrasing does not match the documented proposal: Spirit’s March target was a fleet of 76–80 aircraft, not a reduction of nearly 100 planes. The February plan compared 76 aircraft with a 114-aircraft plan, a difference of 35–40 aircraft.
Why did Spirit propose a smaller fleet?
Spirit said it wanted to lower cash needs and aircraft debt, free collateral that could be monetized, and concentrate flying on demand it considered more profitable. The February proposal included selling 20 aircraft in the A320/A321ceo family and rejecting leases for as many as 18 higher-cost NEO aircraft. Those were proposed actions, not evidence that the sales or lease rejections were completed.

What would the smaller airline have looked like?
In its March restructuring plan, Spirit said the fleet would consist mostly of Airbus A320/A321ceo aircraft. It identified Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, Detroit and the New York City area as strong markets for a more focused network. The plan called for greater aircraft use on peak days and less flying during off-peak periods. Spirit also said it planned to expand Spirit First and Premium Economy seating.
Why did Spirit stop flying instead?
On May 2, 2026, Spirit announced that it had begun an orderly wind-down immediately, cancelled all flights and had no additional funding available. The company said a material increase in oil prices, along with other business pressures, had significantly affected its financial outlook. CEO Dave Davis said the rise in fuel prices “ultimately has left us with no alternative but to pursue an orderly wind-down of the Company.” Spirit’s wind-down announcement

The Associated Press later reported that a bankruptcy judge authorized a wind-down plan involving sales of assets such as aircraft, engines, spare parts, gates and airport landing slots. Court filings cited in that coverage described a 114-aircraft Airbus A320-family fleet during liquidation. That figure describes the later liquidation context; it is not a revised version of Spirit’s proposed 76-aircraft operating plan. The Associated Press’s liquidation coverage
