Spirit estimated the delivery changes would improve liquidity by about $340 million over two years. These are historical announcements, not current operating plans: Spirit began an orderly wind-down and cancelled all flights on May 2, 2026.
What Airbus deliveries did Spirit defer?
Spirit said its agreement with Airbus moved aircraft on order that had been scheduled for delivery from Q2 2025 through the end of 2026 to 2030–2031. The company did not identify this as a reduction in its total order: it said the agreement left the total number of aircraft on order and options unchanged.
- Two aircraft scheduled to arrive through direct leases in Q2 and Q3 2025 were excluded from the deferrals.
- Deliveries already scheduled for 2027–2029 were unchanged.
- Exercise dates for optional aircraft moved back by two years.
Spirit’s April 8 announcement concerned its Airbus order schedule; it did not provide a model-by-model delivery calendar in the terms summarized here. The company described the change as a way to preserve cash and focus on its core airline. Then-CEO Ted Christie said the amendment was “an important part of Spirit’s comprehensive plan to bolster profitability and strengthen our balance sheet.” Spirit’s April 8, 2024 announcement.
How much liquidity did Spirit expect to gain?
Spirit estimated the Airbus deferrals would improve liquidity by approximately $340 million over the next two years. That was the company’s estimate, not an independently audited result reported in the announcement.

Separately, Spirit estimated that a compensation agreement with Pratt & Whitney related to GTF engines would improve liquidity by $150 million to $200 million over the agreement’s term. This was a distinct estimate with a different time frame; it should not be added to the Airbus figure as though both covered the same period or arrangement. The company’s statement does not establish that either estimate was ultimately realized in full.
Why did Spirit plan to furlough about 260 pilots?
Spirit linked its planned furloughs to aircraft grounded because Pratt & Whitney GTF engine availability issues had reduced the number of aircraft it could use, as well as to the delayed deliveries. With fewer available aircraft and deliveries pushed further out, the airline said it intended to furlough approximately 260 pilots effective September 1, 2024.

The announcement set out an intention and effective date. The cited company statement does not establish how many pilots were ultimately furloughed under that specific plan or whether its execution changed.

Spirit’s later financial developments superseded the context of the 2024 delivery and staffing announcement. On March 13, 2026, the airline announced a restructuring support agreement and proposed plan of reorganization. It described a proposed fleet of 76–80 aircraft by the third quarter of 2026, primarily A320/321ceo models, and expected debt and lease obligations to fall from $7.4 billion before filing to about $2 billion after emergence. Those figures were proposals and expectations, not completed outcomes. At that time Spirit said customers could continue booking and traveling and use tickets, credits, and loyalty points as normal. That travel guidance was superseded on May 2, 2026, when Spirit said it had begun an orderly wind-down effective immediately and cancelled all flights. The company attributed the decision to a significantly worsened financial outlook, including materially higher oil prices and other pressures, and said it could not obtain the additional funding it needed. CEO Dave Davis said sustaining the business required “hundreds of millions of additional dollars of liquidity that Spirit simply does not have and could not procure.” Spirit’s May 2, 2026 wind-down announcement.
What affected customers were told about refunds
In its wind-down notice, Spirit said direct credit- or debit-card purchases for flights would be refunded automatically to the original payment method. Customers who booked through a travel agent were told to contact that agent. The announcement said the treatment of bookings paid for with vouchers, credits, or Free Spirit points would be determined later through the bankruptcy process.
