In July 2003, Spellman planned to add 20,000 square feet and more than 50 workers to its manufacturing facility in Matamoros, Mexico. At the time, the plant occupied 30,000 square feet and had 185 employees, according to Electronic Design. The announcement described a production site making finished products and critical subassemblies—not a completed expansion or a measured financial result.
What Spellman announced in July 2003
Electronic Design reported on July 21, 2003, that Spellman intended to expand its Matamoros plant by 20,000 square feet and add more than 50 workers. The report described the existing facility as 30,000 square feet, with 185 assemblers, technicians, and manufacturing engineers.
The plant produced finished products as well as critical subassemblies. The report said it used encapsulation and test technologies also used in Spellman’s New York operation. Tom Swensen, identified in the article as director of Mexico Operations, said work from Matamoros benefited the company’s New York and United Kingdom design and development centers through quality, on-time delivery, and cost savings. He also linked the company’s broader growth partly to the work of Matamoros employees.
How the 2003 plan fits the later timeline
The planned 20,000-square-foot addition was one stage in a sequence of separately reported developments. Spellman’s subsequent announcements describe different plants, scopes, and plans; their figures should not be treated as a like-for-like measure of the 2003 project’s results.

| December 2009 | Plant 2 addition | Spellman reported that Plant 2, opened in March 2008, added 25,000 square feet for metal fabrication and brought plating in-house. The company said its total Matamoros manufacturing footprint then reached 150,000 square feet. [Spellman, December 2009] |

What Spellman reports about its Mexico operations today
Spellman’s Mexico facilities page describes two buildings in Matamoros. It says Plant 3 focuses on top-level assemblies and finished products, while Plant 2/4 supplies subassemblies and includes metal stamping, machining, printed-circuit-board assembly, cables, coils, transformers, painting, plating, and welding. The company page reports approximately 900 assemblers and technicians and lists ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 certifications. These are company-reported descriptions, not independent audit findings. Its expansion plan dated 2016 is historical, not evidence of a current project. [Spellman Mexico facilities]
January 2026 fire and operational status
Spellman said a major fire occurred at its Matamoros sub-assembly facility early on January 23, 2026. In a February 7 update, the company said three firefighters died fighting the fire. Spellman also said its main plant, which handles top-level assembly, testing, and administrative and technical work, was not directly affected, and that it had activated its business continuity plan and begun recovery work. [Spellman, February 7, 2026]
On April 15, 2026, the Tamaulipas state government reported that more than 350 workers were able to resume work at another plant under an agreement. That confirms a worker relocation and continuity arrangement; it does not establish that the fire-damaged building had fully reopened. [Tamaulipas state government, April 15, 2026]

The 2003 report documents the announced size and staffing plans and the facility’s production role. The later company announcements record additional development in Matamoros. None of the reviewed sources quantifies how much output, revenue, productivity, or regional economic activity resulted specifically from the 2003 addition. The dated figures concern different facilities and scopes, so they cannot establish a continuous growth series or a causal financial outcome.
