SpaceX vs. Publicly Traded Aerospace Stocks: What Investors Should Compare

SpaceX is now listed as SPCX, but aerospace stocks are not a uniform peer group. Compare business models, current filings, financing needs, valuation dates, execution risks and shareholder rights before investing.

SpaceX is now publicly traded as SPCX. Its Class A shares began trading on the Nasdaq Global Select Market and Nasdaq Texas on June 12, 2026, after its registration statement became effective June 11, according to SpaceX’s announcement. The useful investor question is no longer whether SpaceX is public, but how to compare it with companies grouped under the broad label “aerospace”—and what the differences mean before buying.

Why “aerospace stocks” are not one peer group

Companies in this sector can depend on very different products, customers and development cycles. A launch provider, a defense contractor and a company selling human spaceflight experiences may all be described as aerospace businesses, but their revenue drivers and risks are not interchangeable.

For a closer operating comparison, Rocket Lab combines launch services with spacecraft and space systems. RTX is an established aerospace and defense company. Virgin Galactic focuses on human spaceflight for private individuals, researchers and government agencies. These are useful reference points for different exposures, not direct equivalents to SpaceX.

How the business models differ

Company What it does How it can inform a comparison
SpaceX Publicly traded as SPCX; use its current filings for the company’s detailed business mix and financial results. The central company being assessed. Do not infer its financial profile from a competitor’s business or market reaction.
Rocket Lab Its 2025 Form 10-K describes Electron, a family of spacecraft and development of Neutron. A closer launch and space-systems reference, but its products, scale and economics are not identical to SpaceX’s.
RTX An established aerospace and defense company. Its 2025 Form 10-K, filed February 6, 2026, covers the year ended December 31, 2025. Useful for considering exposure to a broader aerospace and defense business. Consult the filing for its actual segments and results rather than relying on the filing index alone.
Virgin Galactic Human spaceflight for private individuals, researchers and government agencies. Illustrates a different, passenger-oriented spaceflight model with its own operating and financing risks.

Rocket Lab’s SEC cover page reported an aggregate market value of shares held by non-affiliates of $14.9 billion as of June 30, 2025. That is a dated cover-page measure, not a current market capitalization, and should not be compared with a present-day stock value.

What to compare before deciding whether a stock is attractive

1. Financial performance and funding needs

Read the latest annual and quarterly reports for each company, and align the fiscal periods before comparing figures. Review revenue by segment, gross margin, operating income, cash from operations, capital expenditure, debt, cash and financing needs. A company investing heavily in development may have a very different cash profile from one with established products or recurring contracts.

Do not treat a reported revenue number as a complete picture of financial quality. Pair it with margins, cash generation and the spending required to reach or sustain the company’s operating goals.

2. Business mix, customers and contract quality

Identify what each company sells and who pays for it. Commercial, government and defense customers can create different demand patterns and contract risks. Check filings for customer concentration, backlog composition and the conditions attached to contracts; a headline backlog figure alone does not establish how quickly or profitably work will convert to revenue.

3. Valuation using matched dates and definitions

Compare market capitalization and enterprise value with relevant revenue, earnings, cash flow or backlog measures, using the same date and consistent definitions. A market capitalization reflects equity value; enterprise value also accounts for debt and cash. Which operating measure is useful depends on the company’s business and financial maturity.

No current, harmonized valuation comparison is established here, so there is no supported basis to rank these stocks as cheaper or more expensive or to state a price target. Use dated market data alongside the latest filings rather than mixing figures from different reporting periods.

4. Execution, regulation and capital intensity

Look beyond plans and milestones to what has actually been achieved. Relevant checks include launch cadence, reliability, reusable-system progress, development schedules, regulatory approvals and the capital required to deliver the next phase. A company’s own timeline is a management expectation, not a guaranteed outcome.

Virgin Galactic’s 2025 Form 10-K said commercial spaceflight service had been paused in mid-2024 and described a possible 2026 restart schedule as an expectation. Those plans are time-sensitive; check the latest company filings and announcements before relying on them.

5. Governance and shareholder rights

For SpaceX, confirm the precise share classes, voting rights, control arrangements and shareholder protections in its prospectus and SEC filings. The June 2026 listing announcement establishes the ticker and trading dates, but those facts alone do not explain the rights attached to each share class. Also examine board accountability and potential conflicts when evaluating any issuer.

What the reported figures can—and cannot—tell you

Virgin Galactic reported net losses of $278.9 million in 2025 and $346.7 million in 2024 in its 2025 Form 10-K. Those company-reported fiscal-year losses are a reason to examine its financing capacity and operating plans; they are not, by themselves, a valuation comparison with SpaceX, Rocket Lab or RTX.

The companies’ reporting periods, segment structures and operating models need to be reviewed in their respective filings before drawing quantitative conclusions. A comparison built from an isolated loss, an outdated share-value measure or a market headline can create a misleading impression of relative value.

How to make the comparison practical

  1. Confirm the security. SpaceX trades as SPCX. Do not confuse it with Virgin Galactic, whose ticker is SPCE.
  2. Choose relevant peers for the question. Rocket Lab is a closer launch and space-systems comparator; RTX and Virgin Galactic represent different aerospace exposures.
  3. Open current issuer filings. Use the latest annual and quarterly reports for business descriptions, financial statements, risks, customer concentration and financing needs. For example, RTX’s investor filing page identifies its 2025 Form 10-K as filed February 6, 2026, for the year ended December 31, 2025.
  4. Align the data. Note fiscal year, reporting date, currency, share count and valuation date. Do not treat a historical SEC cover-page measure as current market capitalization.
  5. Read the offering documents. Check the prospectus and applicable SEC filings for SpaceX’s share-class terms and shareholder rights.
  6. Form a thesis around evidence. Decide which operating drivers and risks matter to you, then compare price with the financial and operating measures relevant to each business.

Why an IPO or a competitor’s stock move is not a valuation signal

A high-profile listing can attract attention, but publicity does not establish what a share is worth. Nor does a rival’s stock rising or falling show that another company’s fundamentals have changed. Investment decisions should rest on the issuer’s disclosures, the security’s terms, the price being paid and the risks a shareholder is taking—not the prominence of the company or a single market reaction.
