Blue Origin’s documented opportunity is centered on New Glenn launches, government and civil-space contracts, and lunar systems—but its official materials do not disclose company revenue or profit. That makes their business strategies comparable, but their financial results are not.
How SpaceX makes money
SpaceX describes a vertically integrated model: it develops and builds launch and satellite systems in-house, uses launch capability to reduce the cost of reaching space, and invests in related businesses. Its June 2026 prospectus reports two established revenue segments—Space and Connectivity—and a newer, investment-heavy AI segment. SpaceX’s June 2026 prospectus is the source for the segment descriptions and figures below.
Launch services and development contracts
The Space segment earns revenue from customer launch services and launch-and-development contracts. SpaceX also launches its own Starlink satellites, but says it does not recognize inter-segment revenue for those internal launches. In other words, an internal launch supports the connectivity business; it is not counted as a sale from one SpaceX segment to another.
Starlink connectivity
Connectivity revenue comes from Starlink subscriptions and enterprise and government customers. The prospectus identifies uses including aviation, maritime, mobility, and fixed-site service. SpaceX reported approximately 10.3 million Starlink subscribers as of March 31, 2026; its definition is a service line, not necessarily one person, account, device, or household.

AI infrastructure
SpaceX presents AI as a growth investment, including terrestrial data centers and planned orbital computing—not as a mature source of cash. The prospectus reported a $6.355 billion AI-segment operating loss for 2025. That loss is a segment result, not a measure of SpaceX’s total company profit.
How Blue Origin makes money—or could
Blue Origin’s disclosed activities span suborbital flights, orbital launch, engines, lunar systems, and planned space habitats. Those activities point to several possible revenue streams, but official company, NASA, and U.S. Space Force materials reviewed here do not disclose consolidated Blue Origin revenue, margins, or profitability. The company’s contract awards and programs therefore show commercial opportunities, not how much revenue it has recognized.

Launches, engines, and spaceflight
New Glenn is Blue Origin’s orbital launch vehicle, and the company has won commercial and government launch work. Blue Origin also identifies reusable engines as a business line. New Shepard has carried passengers and research payloads on suborbital flights, but Blue Origin announced on January 30, 2026, that it would pause New Shepard flights for at least two years and redirect resources to human lunar capabilities. The company’s announcement describes this as a strategic shift, not a completed lunar capability.
Government and civil-space contracts
The U.S. Space Force listed an anticipated value of $2,386,234,812 for Blue Origin’s National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 2 award in 2025. That is an anticipated contract value, not recognized revenue or proof that the same amount has been paid in cash. The Space Force award announcement is the source for that figure.

NASA’s Artemis program identifies Blue Moon MK2 for Artemis V, and NASA also awarded Blue Origin a New Glenn launch for a Mars science mission. These are evidence of civil-space work and potential future activity, not company-wide financial disclosures. See NASA’s Artemis partners page and Blue Origin’s announcement of the Mars mission launch award.
What the reported financial figures show
SpaceX’s 2025 segment data reveal a contrast: Connectivity reported operating income while Space reported an operating loss. They do not, by themselves, establish SpaceX’s total company net income or provide a like-for-like comparison with Blue Origin, whose consolidated financial results are not disclosed in the official sources cited here.

| Measure | SpaceX | Blue Origin |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue disclosure | $4.086 billion of Space-segment revenue in 2025, as reported by SpaceX in its June 2026 prospectus. | Company-level revenue: not stated in the official company, NASA, or Space Force materials cited here. |
| Operating income or loss | Space segment: $657 million operating loss in 2025. Connectivity segment: $4.423 billion operating income in 2025, as reported by SpaceX in its June 2026 prospectus. | Company-level operating income or loss: not stated in the official materials cited here. |
| Other profitability measure | Connectivity segment: $7.168 billion Adjusted EBITDA in 2025, as reported by SpaceX. This is a non-U.S. GAAP measure, not operating income or net profit. | Company-level EBITDA or comparable measure: not stated in the official materials cited here. |
| Contract value | No comparable SpaceX contract-value figure is stated in the cited prospectus data above. | The U.S. Space Force’s 2025 NSSL Phase 3 Lane 2 announcement lists an anticipated contract value of $2,386,234,812. It is not recognized revenue, and contract value may not equal cash received. |
Segment figures are not interchangeable with company-wide results: a segment’s operating income excludes the broader picture required to calculate total net profit. The Connectivity Adjusted EBITDA figure is a different accounting measure again. Blue Origin’s undisclosed company-level results mean there is no supported basis here for declaring which company is more profitable overall.

SpaceX: scaling connectivity while funding development
SpaceX’s growth case rests on expanding Starlink’s subscriber base and enterprise use, winning additional launch and development work, and investing in AI infrastructure. Subscriber growth alone does not settle the economics: for the first quarter of 2026, SpaceX reported that Starlink subscriber average revenue per user (ARPU) declined 22.9% year over year, primarily attributing the decrease to international expansion and lower-priced plans. The company’s challenge is to make added customer scale and operational efficiency compensate for lower average revenue per subscriber and substantial development costs.

- Best Gift for Boys: This model is an excellent gift for aerospace enthusiasts, making it a fantastic birthday present and keepsake. It is suitable for display in the living room, study, or office
Launch investment is another pressure point. SpaceX reported a $657 million Space-segment operating loss in 2025 amid Starship investment, while its AI segment also posted a large operating loss that year. Those results indicate the costs and risks of expansion; they do not establish whether future launches or AI projects will earn an adequate return.
Blue Origin: turn awards and programs into operational capacity
Blue Origin’s growth depends on operationalizing New Glenn, delivering launch work for commercial and government customers, and advancing lunar systems. In June 2026, after a hotfire anomaly in May, the company said it planned to return New Glenn to flight by year-end. That was a management plan at the time of the announcement, not evidence that the return had occurred. The company also described work with NASA on New Glenn upper-stage testing at Stennis Space Center in July 2026; CEO Dave Limp called the partnership part of a shared effort to return to the Moon. Blue Origin’s return-to-flight update and its July 2026 Stennis announcement provide the company’s statements and plans.
Blue Origin is accepting a near-term trade-off by pausing New Shepard while directing resources toward lunar human-spaceflight capability. New Glenn launch awards and NASA’s Artemis V identification of Blue Moon MK2 show potential routes to growth, but successful execution and timing remain central uncertainties. Contract awards and mission assignments are not substitutes for disclosed revenue or proof of completed performance.
How to compare the companies fairly
For a useful business comparison, separate what is reported from what remains unknown. The following measures capture different dimensions and should not be collapsed into a single ranking:
- Recognized revenue and operating profitability: Compare the same reporting period and accounting measure. SpaceX reports segment figures; equivalent company-wide Blue Origin figures are not stated in the official sources cited here.
- Launch cadence, reliability, and reuse: Look for completed missions, successful return to flight, and demonstrated reuse—not only targets or announced plans.
- Recurring connectivity and customer economics: Starlink subscription scale and ARPU trends indicate both customer growth and monetization pressure.
- Government-contract exposure: Awards can add work and visibility, but their anticipated values are not the same as revenue recognized or cash received.
- Capital intensity and execution timelines: Starship, AI infrastructure, New Glenn, and lunar systems all require substantial development; progress and spending need to be assessed over time.
SpaceX’s greater financial visibility makes it possible to analyze several recent segment results. It does not establish that SpaceX is larger or more profitable by every measure, nor does Blue Origin’s lack of disclosed results prove that it is smaller or unprofitable.
