Its Class A shares began trading on Nasdaq under SPCX after the registration statement became effective on June 11, 2026, and the initial public offering was priced at $135 per share. That offer price is a historical reference, not a current quote.
A useful comparison with public aerospace and defense stocks therefore starts with business mix and financial quality, not a ticker-to-ticker price check. SpaceX combines launch services, satellite connectivity and AI-related operations, while many established aerospace and defense issuers concentrate on aircraft, engines, weapons systems or government services. Compare each company on the same reporting period, normalize backlog definitions, separate growth from profitability, and account for capital needs, customer concentration, execution risk and share-class control.

Is SpaceX stock publicly traded?
Yes. SpaceX is publicly listed as Nasdaq: SPCX. The company’s official release states that its registration statement for Class A common stock became effective on June 11, 2026, and that the IPO price was $135 per Class A share. A later issuer notice identifies the Nasdaq symbol as SPCX.
The distinction between an IPO price and a market price matters. The $135 figure is the price offered in the June 2026 transaction; it does not tell you what the shares trade for now, what the company is worth today, or whether the stock is expensive relative to its peers. Before making a comparison, obtain the latest quote, share count, market capitalization and filings from SpaceX’s investor-relations materials and the exchange.

What the listing changes for investors
- Investors can analyze publicly filed financial statements rather than relying primarily on private-market estimates.
- Quarterly results, risk factors, share-class provisions and debt offerings become part of the valuation record.
- The stock can be compared with listed aerospace and defense companies, but only after adjusting for very different business models.
- Public trading introduces market volatility and dilution questions that were less visible when the company was private.
Why a simple aerospace-stock comparison can mislead
“Aerospace” is an industry label, not a uniform economic model. A launch provider earns revenue when missions occur and must fund vehicles, launch infrastructure and development programs. A connectivity operator may build a recurring subscriber and capacity business. An AI-related operation can have different customers, pricing, infrastructure and capital requirements. By contrast, a traditional aerospace or defense contractor may earn mainly from multiyear aircraft, engine, systems-integration or government-service contracts.
Those differences affect margins, cash conversion, backlog, working capital, research spending and valuation multiples. A company with slower revenue growth but stable operating cash flow is not automatically inferior to a faster-growing issuer that is investing heavily and reporting losses. Likewise, a large backlog can represent very different levels of future revenue depending on cancellation rights, options, contract funding and delivery schedules.
Separate SpaceX’s operating segments
- Launch and space operations: Examine launch cadence, vehicle development, mission reliability, customer readiness and the timing of deployment. Most customer-payload revenue and related costs are recognized at launch or deployment, so weather, customer readiness and operating conditions can move revenue between quarters.
- Connectivity: Analyze subscriber or capacity economics, network deployment, regulatory permissions, hardware costs, geographic exposure and recurring versus equipment revenue where the filings provide those details.
- AI-related activity: Identify infrastructure investment, customer concentration, contract duration and the extent to which the activity is established, developing or dependent on future deployment.
Do not combine these activities into one growth narrative without checking the segment disclosures. A peer whose revenue comes almost entirely from defense programs may provide a useful contract comparison but a poor margin or capital-intensity comparison.
SpaceX’s disclosed financial starting point
Use the June 2026 prospectus and subsequent filings as the baseline, and preserve each figure’s period and accounting measure.
| Item | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| IPO offer price | $135 per Class A share in June 2026 | Historical offering price, not a current market quotation |
| Net loss | $4.937 billion for 2025 | Full-year net loss reported by SpaceX; do not treat revenue scale as proof of profitability |
| Net loss | $4.276 billion for the first quarter of 2026, unaudited | Quarter-specific result; compare with the same quarter and the latest trailing period for peers |
| Backlog | $47.461 billion as of June 30, 2026 | Transaction price for enforceable customer performance obligations where work remained; it is not recognized revenue, cash received or guaranteed profit |
SpaceX expected approximately 56% of that June 30 backlog to be recognized within one year, 34% in one to three years and 10% thereafter. Those percentages describe expected recognition timing, not a promise that every dollar will become revenue on schedule. Compare the schedule with each peer’s own definition and cancellation terms before drawing conclusions.
Losses change the relevant valuation questions
Because the cited prospectus periods show net losses, a price-to-earnings comparison may be unusable or misleading until earnings are positive and comparable. Start with enterprise value relative to revenue only as a descriptive measure, then test whether revenue is converting into gross profit, operating cash flow and free cash flow. If a peer is profitable while SpaceX is investing for expansion, explain that the difference may reflect strategy and lifecycle as well as operating efficiency.
Also examine the path to profitability: expected operating expenses, capital expenditures, vehicle and network development, financing terms and the cash runway under realistic launch and deployment schedules. SpaceX warns that it may not sustain profitability and expects additional operating expense and capital expenditure as it pursues growth. A higher valuation can be rational only if the future economics justify the investment and execution risk.

The comparison framework investors should use
1. Business mix and end markets
Build a segment map before looking at multiples. For SpaceX, identify the contribution of launch and space, connectivity and AI-related operations. For each public peer, classify revenue as commercial, civil-government or defense, and note whether contracts are fixed-price, cost-plus, subscription-like or transaction-based when disclosed.
Then ask whether the peer actually shares an economic driver with SpaceX. A launch provider may be comparable on mission cadence and vehicle investment. A satellite or communications company may be comparable on network deployment and recurring service revenue. A defense systems contractor may be useful for studying government concentration and backlog discipline but not for valuing a rapidly expanding connectivity operation.
2. Growth quality
Use a common period and calculate year-over-year and sequential growth from reported figures. Separate organic growth from acquisitions, foreign-exchange effects, contract modifications and accounting changes. For SpaceX, examine how many launches or deployments underlie reported revenue and whether timing moved between quarters.
Growth quality improves when revenue is supported by repeat customers, signed contracts, healthy gross margins and operating cash flow. It is weaker when growth depends on one launch window, a small number of customers, aggressive assumptions or heavy external financing.
3. Profitability and cash generation
Compare gross margin, operating margin, net margin, operating cash flow and free cash flow for matching periods. Explain unusual items such as stock compensation, impairment, restructuring, gains on investments or one-time contract effects. A net loss can coexist with positive operating cash flow, while a reported profit can coexist with weak cash conversion.
For SpaceX, track whether investment spending is producing additional launch capacity, connectivity revenue or AI-related contracts. For mature peers, investigate whether cash generation is being returned to shareholders, used for acquisitions, or required to maintain aging production lines and facilities.
4. Backlog quality and conversion
Backlog is useful only when its definition is understood. SpaceX defines backlog as the transaction price for enforceable customer performance obligations for which work remains. Its filing also provides an expected recognition schedule. A peer may include funded orders, options, indefinite-delivery quantities, unfunded government ceilings or cancellable arrangements, producing a total that is not directly comparable.

For every issuer, record:
- What contracts qualify for backlog inclusion.
- Whether options, renewals or unfunded portions are included.
- Cancellation, termination-for-convenience and re-pricing rights.
- Expected conversion into revenue by year.
- Customer and program concentration inside the backlog.
- Required milestones, capacity and financing before delivery.
Backlog should be tested against historical conversion. A large balance with slow delivery, low margins or substantial performance obligations can be less valuable than a smaller, well-funded backlog that converts predictably.
5. Capital needs, debt and liquidity
Compare capital expenditures, research and development, cash balances, debt maturities, interest expense and access to financing. SpaceX announced a senior unsecured notes offering in June 2026 and describes substantial future investment needs. Review the actual terms, covenants, ranking and maturity schedule in the relevant filing rather than assuming debt is interchangeable with equity funding.
Capital intensity is not automatically negative. It can create a durable network or production advantage, but investors must estimate how much additional capital is required before a project produces cash. A peer with lower capital spending may be more resilient in a downturn; a peer with higher spending may be building capacity that supports stronger long-term returns.
6. Customer concentration and contract durability
SpaceX’s June 2026 filing reports two customers representing more than 10% of consolidated revenue for the period. The cited note says one customer relates to all three segments and another relates to the AI segment; the passage does not identify them, so investors should not guess their names.
For each peer, calculate the share of revenue from customers above the issuer’s disclosed concentration threshold and identify whether those customers are governments, prime contractors, commercial enterprises or distributors. Concentration can provide scale and predictable demand, but it also increases the effect of a delayed order, budget change, failed renewal or pricing dispute.

7. Execution, regulation and timing risk
Review launch reliability, development milestones, deployment schedules, licensing, spectrum or other regulatory approvals, supply-chain dependencies and workforce requirements. SpaceX specifically warns that launch timing can shift revenue and cost recognition between reporting periods. A quarter with fewer launches may reflect scheduling rather than a permanent demand decline, while a busy quarter may not indicate a sustainable run rate.
Compare how each company reports program delays, technical problems, customer acceptance and estimated costs to complete. In defense programs, fixed-price development exposure can create a different risk profile from cost-plus work. In launch and network businesses, a single technical or regulatory delay can affect both revenue timing and cash spending.

8. Governance, share classes and dilution
Read the latest prospectus and filings for Class A and other share classes, voting rights, founder or insider control, conversion provisions, authorized shares, employee equity plans and potential future issuance. Market capitalization should be calculated with the appropriate diluted share count, not just the number of shares visible in a basic quote.
Governance affects valuation because minority shareholders may have limited influence over capital allocation, executive compensation, acquisitions or related-party transactions. Compare these rights with those of each public peer before applying the same valuation premium or discount.

How to choose a defensible peer group
Do not start with the biggest aerospace names. Start with the question you are trying to answer, then choose peers that share the relevant economics.
| Investor question | Most relevant peer characteristics | Where the comparison breaks down |
|---|---|---|
| Can launch growth become profitable? | Launch providers or space companies with disclosed mission, capacity and development economics | Aircraft or defense contractors may have steadier contracts and different margins |
| How valuable is recurring connectivity? | Satellite, broadband or communications issuers with network and subscriber disclosures | Traditional defense backlog may not resemble recurring service revenue |
| How much government exposure is reasonable? | Public contractors that disclose government, commercial and international revenue | SpaceX’s mix spans multiple segments, so a single government-revenue ratio may not translate |
| How should backlog be valued? | Companies with clearly defined, funded, time-phased contract backlogs | Totals can include different options, funding assumptions and cancellation rights |
| How risky is the investment program? | Issuers with comparable capital expenditure, research spending and debt structures | A mature production business may require less upfront spending than a network or vehicle-development company |
Keep the peer set small enough to analyze deeply. A practical set can include one or two launch or space-focused issuers, one connectivity-oriented issuer and several traditional aerospace or defense companies selected for a specific contract or manufacturing comparison. The point is not to create a sector average; it is to identify which economics are genuinely comparable.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Valuation: a sequence that avoids false precision
Start with enterprise value and operating metrics
Collect current equity value, debt, cash and noncontrolling interests, then calculate enterprise value using the same convention for every company. Pair it with revenue, gross profit, operating income and operating cash flow from matching periods. Label whether the period is annual, trailing twelve months or the latest quarter annualized.
For a loss-making company, price-to-earnings may be negative or unavailable. Price-to-sales can show how the market prices revenue but says nothing about margin quality. Enterprise-value-to-revenue can be distorted by large cash balances or debt. Use these ratios as starting points, not verdicts.

Then test the assumptions behind the multiple
- What revenue growth is required to support the valuation?
- What gross and operating margins are achievable after launch, network and AI-related investment?
- How much capital expenditure and working capital are needed to reach those margins?
- How long does backlog take to convert, and what portion can be canceled or delayed?
- What dilution could arise from employee awards, conversions or future fundraising?
- How sensitive is the valuation to launch cadence, regulatory approval or customer concentration?
A scenario table is more informative than one target multiple. Build conservative, base and optimistic cases using explicit assumptions for launches or deployments, revenue recognition timing, margin, capital spending, financing and diluted shares. The output should be a range of enterprise value and equity value, with the assumptions visible for challenge.

A step-by-step process for comparing SpaceX with listed peers
- Fix the date. Record the quote date, latest filing date and reporting period. Do not mix SpaceX’s June 2026 disclosures with a peer’s older annual report.
- Download primary filings. Use SpaceX investor-relations materials and each peer’s latest annual, quarterly and current reports. Capture segment definitions, accounting policies, debt terms and share-class rights.
- Create a segment bridge. List launch and space, connectivity, AI-related, commercial, government and defense activities separately. Mark any line item that is not disclosed.
- Normalize revenue and profit. Use the same period and currency, identify one-time items, and show revenue, gross profit, operating income, net income, operating cash flow and free cash flow.
- Rebuild backlog. Write down each issuer’s definition, funded status, options, cancellation rights and expected recognition schedule. Never rank raw backlog totals without these notes.
- Measure concentration. Record customers above the disclosed threshold, program or geographic concentration and government-budget dependence.
- Map capital requirements. Compare capital expenditure, research spending, debt maturities, cash and announced financing. Estimate spending still required to complete major programs.
- Check execution evidence. Review launch or delivery cadence, acceptance milestones, delays, regulatory approvals and cost-to-complete disclosures.
- Calculate valuation ranges. Use diluted shares and current market data, then apply revenue, cash-flow or earnings measures only where the underlying economics are comparable.
- Write the investment case and disconfirming evidence. State what must go right, what could invalidate the thesis and which filing or operating metric would provide an early warning.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Treating the IPO price as today’s valuation
The June 2026 offer price is a dated transaction term. Replace it with the current quote and current diluted share count when calculating market capitalization.
Calling backlog revenue
Backlog represents enforceable remaining performance obligations under SpaceX’s definition. It is not cash already earned and does not guarantee profit. Recognition depends on delivery, launch or deployment and other contractual conditions.
Comparing unlike backlog totals
One issuer may include options or unfunded contract ceilings while another includes only funded orders. Read the footnotes before ranking companies.

Because many customer-payload costs and revenue are recognized at launch or deployment, weather, customer readiness and operations can shift results between quarters. Use several periods and operating milestones rather than one quarter.
Assuming growth equals profitability
SpaceX reports substantial losses in the cited periods and expects further investment. Revenue growth must be evaluated alongside margins, cash generation and the financing needed to sustain it.
Guessing the identities of concentrated customers
The cited filing passage anonymizes the two customers above 10% of consolidated revenue. Preserve that limitation and analyze the exposure without speculation.
What a balanced conclusion should say
SpaceX can be compared with public aerospace and defense stocks, but not with a single sector-average number. Its public listing makes current filings and market data available, while its combination of launch, connectivity and AI-related operations creates a different risk and return profile from a conventional aircraft or defense contractor. The disciplined approach is to match business drivers, normalize periods and accounting definitions, test backlog conversion, quantify capital and financing needs, and value future cash generation rather than headline revenue or a historical IPO price.
Investors who complete that work can decide whether SPCX offers compensation for its losses, concentration and execution risks. Investors who skip it may mistake a large backlog for earned sales, a fast-growing segment for a profitable company, or an aerospace label for genuine comparability.
