Re:

SpaceX Is Worth About $800 Billion More Than Tesla Despite Less Than a Quarter of Its Sales

At a specified October 2026 close, SpaceX’s market value was about $800 billion higher than Tesla’s, despite having less than one-quarter of its trailing revenue. The difference reflects growth and profit expectations, not sales alone.

At Wednesday’s close in the October 9, 2026 market snapshot, SpaceX was valued at about $2.27 trillion and Tesla at about $1.49 trillion—a gap of roughly $800 billion. Yet SpaceX had about $23 billion in trailing-four-quarter revenue, compared with Tesla’s $104 billion. The comparison is a snapshot, not a live quote, and the gap reflects investors’ expectations about future growth and profits as well as today’s sales.

What the $800 billion comparison means

The figures come from The Motley Fool’s October 2026 comparison of the companies at Wednesday’s close. They describe public-market values—market capitalization—not the amount of cash either company has or a private-company valuation. Share prices change, so the market-value figures and the gap can move after that close. The Motley Fool’s market snapshot puts SpaceX at about $2.27 trillion and Tesla at about $1.49 trillion.

The “less than a quarter” refers to sales over the same trailing four-quarter period: roughly $23 billion for SpaceX versus $104 billion for Tesla. Dividing each market value by that revenue produces approximate price-to-sales multiples of 99 for SpaceX and 14 for Tesla. These are sales multiples, not earnings multiples: they say how much market value investors assign per dollar of revenue, not how much profit either company earns.

Why the old $800 billion SpaceX figure is different

There are two distinct $800 billion figures. In December 2025, Bloomberg reported that a proposed SpaceX insider share sale implied a private-company valuation of about $800 billion. SpaceX later went public in June 2026. The October 2026 headline’s “$800 billion more” is instead the approximate difference between SpaceX’s and Tesla’s public-market values at the specified close; it is not SpaceX’s total valuation. Bloomberg’s report on the proposed 2025 sale concerns that earlier, separate figure.

What SpaceX’s latest reported results show

Fast revenue growth, with several sources

SpaceX reported $7.8 billion in revenue for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, up 91.9% from the same quarter a year earlier. In its Q2 filing, it attributed the increase to AI infrastructure contracts, growth in Connectivity as Starlink subscribers and enterprise and government customers expanded, and growth in its Space segment. The company reported a $541 million net loss for the quarter. SpaceX’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q provides the segment and financial disclosures.

The segments have different economics

SpaceX groups its operations into Space, Connectivity and AI. Space covers launch and development services. Connectivity is primarily Starlink, serving consumer, government, aviation, maritime and enterprise customers. AI includes Grok and X subscriptions as well as AI infrastructure and cloud services. That mix matters: revenue growth in one segment does not show that every part of the company is profitable or growing at the same rate.

The Motley Fool’s calculation says Connectivity generated about $5.3 billion in operating income over the latest four quarters, while Tesla generated approximately $4.4 billion in operating income over that period. It also reports that Starlink’s subscriber count doubled to 12 million. These are the article’s calculations and descriptions based on company disclosures, rather than a single directly comparable reported measure for the two businesses. Separately, SpaceX’s AI segment reported $3.7 billion in operating losses in the first half of 2026. Those losses are a reminder that rapid investment and growth do not automatically translate into durable profits.

Why investors may accept a higher sales multiple

A market valuation reflects expectations about future cash flows, not just the latest revenue total. The Motley Fool’s interpretation is that SpaceX’s valuation assumes continued Starlink growth and a future improvement in AI economics. Its interpretation of Tesla’s valuation emphasizes expectations for autonomy and robotics. These are expectations, not reported results or guaranteed outcomes. The companies’ future value depends on whether they can turn those opportunities into lasting revenue and profit.

For SpaceX, the central tension is visible in the same results: Connectivity has produced substantial operating income, while AI has incurred large operating losses. Investors assigning a high multiple may believe the growth potential outweighs the current losses, but the disclosed figures do not establish when—or whether—AI will become profitable. SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was quoted by The Motley Fool after the August 2026 Q2-results call saying, “I think people are really underestimating Starlink here.” That is the CEO’s view as reported by the publication, not a verified transcript quotation or an assurance of future performance.

Tesla’s comparison also involves more than its own vehicle sales. Its Q2 filing says Tesla invested $2 billion in SpaceX common stock in March 2026, representing less than 1% ownership. Tesla also recorded $318 million in Q2 revenue and $242 million in cost of revenue from SpaceX Megapack purchases. Those disclosed ties are relevant context, but the investment is a minority stake and does not make the two companies’ financial results interchangeable. Tesla’s Q2 2026 Form 10-Q describes the investment and the Megapack transactions.

What the IPO does—and does not—tell you

SpaceX priced 555,555,555 Class A shares at $135 each in its June 2026 IPO, with trading scheduled to begin under ticker SPCX on June 12. Its June 15 closing release said the full issuance of 638,888,888 shares generated about $85.7 billion in gross proceeds. These figures describe the IPO, not the later market capitalization in the October comparison. The IPO price and proceeds cannot be substituted for a subsequent closing-price snapshot. SpaceX’s IPO pricing announcement and closing announcement give those historical details.

How to read the comparison as an investor

The headline is striking because the companies have very different amounts of revenue, but revenue alone cannot establish which stock is better value. A useful comparison separates what is reported from what the share prices imply:

  • Note: This model is not a toy model, it is not recommended to buy for children, please buy with caution to avoid unnecessary trouble for your shopping
  • Market value: the approximately $2.27 trillion and $1.49 trillion figures apply to the specified Wednesday close in October 2026, not to today’s price.
  • Revenue multiple: SpaceX’s roughly 99-times trailing sales multiple is much higher than Tesla’s roughly 14-times multiple. Neither figure says how much earnings an investor is buying.
  • Profitability: SpaceX’s Connectivity segment income sits alongside AI operating losses; Tesla’s consolidated operating income is not directly comparable to one SpaceX segment.
  • Execution risk: future Starlink expansion, an AI turnaround, autonomy and robotics depend on commercial execution. The cited results do not establish that these plans will deliver the returns investors expect.

For a personal investor, the key question is not simply why SpaceX is worth more per dollar of sales. It is whether the future growth and profit assumptions embedded in either company’s share price are plausible for your time horizon and risk tolerance. The market snapshot illustrates a large difference in expectations; it does not settle whether either stock is appropriately valued.
