Reuters reported on August 4, 2026, that Elon Musk expected SpaceX to receive a “significant percentage” of Nvidia’s sought-after GPUs the following year. That is a qualitative expectation, not a confirmed order size.
What SpaceX and Nvidia have disclosed
SpaceX announced a data-center chip partnership with Nvidia in August 2026, according to Reuters. Musk said SpaceX expected to receive a “significant percentage” of Nvidia’s sought-after GPUs the following year. The report did not provide a GPU count, purchase price, delivery schedule, or share of Nvidia revenue.

Nvidia’s August 26, 2026 earnings-call transcript discusses the wider AI infrastructure market, but the cited passage does not quantify SpaceX’s purchases or independently confirm an order value. Nvidia’s investor-relations materials are the company’s primary channel for financial disclosures; the transcript itself is available through FactSet CallStreet.
Why the 325,000-GPU figure is easy to misread
SpaceX’s June 5, 2026 prospectus describes compute capacity it provides to Anthropic across its Colossus and Colossus II facilities. That capacity includes approximately 325,000 Nvidia GPUs, plus hyperscale-class CPUs, exabyte-scale storage, and high-speed networking. The figure describes infrastructure capacity available through the services arrangement; it is not a disclosed quantity of GPUs SpaceX bought under its Nvidia partnership.

- AI Performance: 767 AI TOPS
- OC mode: 2632 MHz (OC mode)/ 2602 MHz (Default mode)
- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- A 2.5-slot design maximizes compatibility and cooling efficiency for superior performance in small chassis
The prospectus says Anthropic agreed to pay SpaceX $1.25 billion per month through May 2029, with capacity ramping at a reduced fee in May and June 2026. After an initial three-month period, either party may terminate on 90 days’ notice. This is a compute-services contract between Anthropic and SpaceX, not a disclosed Nvidia purchase order. The prospectus also says, “We expect to enter into additional similar services contracts for compute capacity with third parties.”
Buying GPUs and selling compute are different sides of the business
SpaceX’s reported expected GPU allocation concerns its prospective access to Nvidia hardware. Its Anthropic agreement concerns selling access to computing capacity built with infrastructure that includes Nvidia GPUs. The two facts show why SpaceX may need substantial AI hardware while also earning revenue by making some of its data-center capacity available to another company. They do not establish that all GPUs at Colossus or Colossus II were bought through the announced Nvidia partnership.
The distinction matters when interpreting the contract’s headline value: Anthropic’s monthly payment is for compute services paid to SpaceX, not money paid to Nvidia for chips. Nor does the contract value reveal SpaceX’s hardware costs, margins, or the portion of capacity reserved for its own work.

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4. System Requirements: Minimum 850W PSU with 16-pin 12V-2x6 (12VHPWR) connector required. Verify before purchasing.
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability. Compatibility: 348mm (13.7") length, 3.6 slots, 4.3 lbs. Confirm case clearance and slot spacing. GPU bracket included.
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
What remains unknown about SpaceX’s Nvidia spending
- Quantity: No exact number of GPUs in SpaceX’s future Nvidia procurement is disclosed in the cited material.
- Cost: No purchase value, unit price, or share of Nvidia sales is given.
- Timing: Musk’s reported expectation concerned the following year, but the cited report does not specify a delivery calendar.
- Scope: The available disclosures do not identify which facilities or workloads the expected allocation would serve, or how it relates to existing infrastructure.
Nvidia’s earnings-call discussion offers market context, not a SpaceX-specific order estimate. Nvidia said AI venture-capital funding exceeded $400 billion in the first half of 2026 and roughly 70% was spent on compute; those figures describe the broader market and cannot be used to calculate SpaceX’s order.
How to read the next announcement
A later disclosure would make the story more concrete if it identifies GPU quantities, spending, delivery dates, or contract terms. Keep those procurement details separate from the capacity SpaceX leases to customers and from revenue recognized for compute services. Until the companies disclose such terms, “significant percentage” signals expected access to supply, not a measurable order.
