S&P Global Ratings announced a new Vault Risk Assessment (VRA) on Oct. 4, 2026: a forward-looking, relative opinion on the risk that an investor’s position in a digital asset lending vault could be impaired. It is designed to analyze risks that transaction records alone may not reveal. VRA is not a credit rating, does not assess yield, and is not a guarantee against losses.
What S&P means by a digital asset lending vault
A lending vault is an on-chain pooled investment vehicle. Depositors contribute digital assets, which are deployed according to a defined strategy; the strategy may be executed through smart contracts, managed by professionals, or use both. In return, depositors receive share tokens representing a proportional claim on the vault’s assets and returns. S&P describes vaults as comparable in some respects to managed funds, though their structures and strategies can vary. S&P’s product description explains the framework and the types of vaults it is intended to cover.
Blockchain records can make transactions and current positions visible, but that does not necessarily provide a standardized account of how a strategy is managed or how its risks could change. S&P says transaction history alone offers limited insight into how risk may evolve. The VRA is intended to add analysis of structural and operational risks alongside on-chain transparency.
What the Vault Risk Assessment examines
S&P says its framework considers six risk factors. These are dimensions of the overall assessment, not six separately published ratings unless an individual assessment report says otherwise.

- Portfolio credit quality risk: the risk dimension concerning the credit quality of a vault’s portfolio.
- Liquidity mismatch risk: the risk dimension concerning liquidity mismatches.
- Curator risk: risk associated with the vault’s curator.
- Blockchain risk: risk associated with the blockchain on which the vault operates.
- Protocol risk: risk associated with the protocol used.
- Vault security and governance risk: risks related to the vault’s security and governance arrangements.
The public summaries name these factors but do not define their detailed tests, weightings, evidence thresholds, or calibration. S&P says its analytical approach report is available to RatingsDirect subscribers or by purchase request; the public information is not enough to reconstruct how each factor contributes to a particular result.
How to interpret a VRA—and what it does not say
VRA is a forward-looking, relative opinion about the risk of impairment to an investor’s position in a lending vault. It is intended to support consistent comparisons across vaults, and S&P says the approach can apply across different vault structures and strategies. A relative opinion is not a prediction that a particular loss will occur, nor does it mean two vaults have identical risks simply because their opinions are similar.

- It is not a credit rating. S&P says VRA does not assess a vault’s ability to meet payment obligations in full.
- It is not a guarantee of credit quality or an exact measure of risk. The assessment should not be treated as assurance that an investor will recover funds.
- It does not evaluate yield. A VRA does not indicate whether a vault’s returns are attractive, sustainable, or likely to continue.
S&P’s public product page uses the suffix “v” and gives “AAA(v)” as an example at the lowest-risk end of the scale. That example should not be read as equivalent to an ordinary issuer credit rating. The public-facing description does not establish the complete scale or its detailed calibration; S&P’s full approach is in the report available to subscribers or by request.
Why the launch matters as vault deposits grow
S&P Global Ratings reported that total deposits in digital asset lending vaults reached US$10 billion in September 2026, compared with US$1.5 billion in September 2024. Those figures are S&P’s estimates cited in its Oct. 4, 2026 launch announcement, not independently verified totals. The increase helps explain why an assessment framework aimed at investors and institutions may be relevant: a larger pool of capital does not, by itself, make vault strategies easier to compare or their risks easier to understand.

S&P President Yann Le Pallec described demand for independent risk assessments as important as digital assets become more institutionalized. That is the company’s characterization of the market, not evidence that VRA has already been widely adopted.

The Oct. 4 announcement introduced the framework but did not name individual vaults with completed assessments. S&P said individual assessments would be published in future announcements. Until a specific report is available, the framework’s stated factors do not tell an investor how S&P assessed any particular vault.

When an assessment is published, readers should consider the opinion alongside the vault’s strategy, underlying assets and lending markets, curator, liquidity profile, blockchain, protocol, security, and governance. These are material context for understanding what a relative risk opinion applies to. The VRA should not be used as a substitute for checking those details, understanding the possibility of loss, or evaluating a vault’s yield independently.
S&P Global Ratings is offering the VRA as an institutional service. The announcement describes a sales contact/request route for parties seeking access; it is not a consumer protection mechanism or a guarantee of investment performance.
