Southwest’s Low Fare Calendar is most useful when you can shift your travel dates: it shows the lowest fares currently available for each day across a month. It is a date-comparison tool, not a promise that a fare will remain available or that the lowest-priced day will suit your schedule. Compare the exact flights and fare rules before booking.
How Southwest’s Low Fare Calendar works
Choose an origin and destination to view currently available fares by day for a month at a time. Southwest describes it as a way to “see the lowest fares currently available on each day for a month at a time” in its Finding the Lowest Fares guidance.

That wording matters: the displayed fare is a snapshot of current availability, not a price guarantee. Southwest advises customers to “shop early and shop often” because fares can change at any time, even while shopping, according to the same guidance and its Booking Travel Online page.
Pros of using the calendar
It makes flexible dates easier to compare
If you can move your departure or return by a day or more, the month view can reveal lower currently available fares than the dates you first had in mind. Southwest presents the calendar as a way to find the lowest fare by day. The airline’s reviewed guidance does not establish a typical savings amount, percentage, or universally cheapest day.

It can help you spot sale dates
The calendar can show discounted fares offered on particular days in a market. This can be a useful way to identify dates worth checking in the booking flow, but a sale fare may be limited and may not apply to every flight, date, or route.
It narrows the search before you compare flights
A month-level view can help you identify candidate dates quickly. Once you have them, you can compare the actual flight times, stops, and fare options rather than choosing solely by the number shown in the calendar.

Cons and limitations to keep in mind
Fares can change or sell out
Southwest says fares can change at any time, including while you are shopping. Its Flight Sale Information guidance also warns that sale fares may sell out quickly. Confirm the price and availability in the booking flow before making plans around a displayed fare.
The cheapest displayed fare may come with tighter rules
A low price does not tell you whether the fare’s restrictions work for your trip. Southwest says Basic has more restrictions than its other fares; its Basic Fare page describes Basic as the most restrictive fare and says it is non-refundable and non-changeable unless upgraded to another named fare. Review the rules presented for your specific booking, including any applicable cancellation-credit conditions, before purchase.

Some dates may have no service to compare
The calendar cannot make a route operate on a date when it does not. Southwest says flights may not appear for selected dates because a route is seasonal, operates only on certain days of the week, or has no nonstop or connecting service between the selected cities. See the airline’s Where does Southwest fly? guidance for route availability context.
A low fare is not a complete itinerary comparison
The calendar’s price alone does not show whether the flight times, stops, or fare conditions suit you. A slightly higher fare on a more practical itinerary may be a better fit; compare the live itinerary and its terms before deciding.

What to compare before you book
- Service on your candidate dates: Check that the route operates on the day you want and that the available itinerary connects your chosen cities.
- The current fare: Confirm the price in the booking flow, since calendar fares can change and sale inventory may be limited.
- The actual itinerary: Compare departure and arrival times, stops, and whether the flights fit your schedule.
- The fare rules: Review the restrictions for the fare you select, including change and refund terms, rather than assuming the lowest displayed fare has the flexibility you need.
Southwest’s official help pages do not establish a universally cheapest travel day, an average savings figure, or a guaranteed future fare. The calendar is best treated as a way to find and compare current date options, with the booking details—not the calendar view—used to make the final decision.
