The time limit depends on the fare: Basic credits expire six months from ticketing, while credits for Choice, Choice Preferred, and Choice Extra expire one year from booking and ticketing. Eligible older credits remain non-expiring under Southwest’s transition rules.
What changed about Southwest flight credits?
Southwest’s former no-expiration treatment for flight credits no longer applies to credits associated with covered reservations from May 28, 2025 onward. Flight credits generally result when travel is canceled or a ticket is downgraded, and can be used toward future Southwest travel. The new rule makes the expiration period depend on the fare product.

How long do credits last by fare?

Which older credits still do not expire?
Southwest’s transition rule preserves credits issued from July 28, 2022 through May 27, 2025 as non-expiring. That protection also covers certain later-issued credits associated with reservations made before the policy change. How to check a particular credit
- Check the reservation date. Find out whether the reservation was booked and ticketed, or voluntarily changed, on or after May 28, 2025. The transition rule also protects qualifying credits issued during the July 28, 2022–May 27, 2025 period and certain later credits tied to pre-change reservations.
- Identify the fare product. Determine whether the credit is associated with Basic, Choice, Choice Preferred, or Choice Extra.
- Read the credit’s terms. Check the specific flight credit for its expiration date and whether it is transferable; do not infer these details from another credit or reservation.
Why the perk change matters
A non-expiring credit gave travelers more time to rebook after canceling or changing plans. With the new rules, the fare chosen for a covered booking determines both the time available to use a resulting credit and whether it can be transferred.
