The airline said the consolidation was intended to improve operational efficiency and reliability. It did not announce that it was leaving either airport. Austin’s crew-base status later changed again: Southwest announced a new base for pilots and flight attendants, planned to open in early March 2026.
What Southwest closed—and what it did not
The July 1, 2025, change affected two flight-attendant satellite bases. They were not pilot bases, and the announcements did not say Southwest was closing Austin-Bergstrom International Airport or Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, or ending service at either airport. The two satellite bases had opened in 2018 as a test, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
Southwest said attendants assigned to the satellite bases would transfer to its primary bases. The decision was announced in early March 2025 and took effect July 1.
About 280 flight attendants were affected
The San Antonio Express-News reported that about 280 flight attendants would be relocated in total. The Miami Herald separately estimated about 125 attendants at Fort Lauderdale and about 150 in Austin. Those city estimates are rounded figures and do not add up to an exact 280; they should be read as approximate, not as a precise headcount.

For employees, the practical change was a reassignment to a primary base rather than the loss of an airport or a flight-attendant job solely because the satellite location closed. The available reports describe transfers, not individual outcomes such as commuting arrangements or specific new assignments.
Southwest’s stated reason was operational consolidation
Southwest said it was consolidating flight-attendant satellite bases into its 12 primary base cities to maximize operational efficiency and reliability. A spokesperson told the Miami Herald that the change would strengthen the crew network and support a more reliable operation for employees and customers. Those are the company’s stated aims, not independent measurements showing that reliability improved.

Bill Bernal, president of TWU Local 556, the flight attendants’ union, acknowledged the company’s authority to make the decision while noting its impact on attendants: “While the company is within its rights to make this decision, it is not without impact on Flight Attendants,” the Express-News reported.
Fort Lauderdale’s base closure was separate from service reductions
The base announcement was not itself an announcement that Southwest was leaving Fort Lauderdale. There was separate evidence of a changing network there: the Miami Herald reported that Southwest shifted most of its international flights from Fort Lauderdale to Orlando in June 2024. The airline said the schedule better matched travel patterns and made use of Orlando’s connectivity; COO Andrew M. Watterson said the change would offer “better connectivity in our domestic network.” That shift predated the July 2025 base closure.

Passenger figures also showed a decline at Fort Lauderdale, but they do not establish that the crew-base closure caused service reductions. The Miami Herald, citing airport figures, reported that Southwest carried just under 4 million passengers at Fort Lauderdale in 2024, 18% fewer than in 2023. It also reported about 265,000 passengers to and from the airport in January 2025, down 37% year over year.
Southwest’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed in 2026, later said the airline reduced service at both Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale in response to market conditions and redeployed underperforming capacity. That filing describes a network decision; it does not say the July 2025 flight-attendant base closure caused the route or capacity changes. See the 2025 Form 10-K.

Austin later got a separate crew-base announcement
On December 12, 2025, Southwest announced a new Austin crew base for both pilots and flight attendants, distinct from the flight-attendant satellite base that had closed in July. The company said it expected the new base to open in early March 2026 with approximately 335 pilots and 650 flight attendants, and expected Austin employment to reach 2,000 total employees by mid-2027. These were announced plans and staffing targets, not confirmed achieved headcounts.
Southwest’s current flight-attendant careers page lists Austin among its 13 bases and does not list Fort Lauderdale. The sources available here do not include a separate announcement confirming that the planned Austin base opened or verifying its staffing totals. Austin’s later listing should therefore be understood in the context of the company’s new-base announcement, not as evidence that the July 2025 closure never occurred.

What the decision means for travelers
A crew base is an employee assignment location, not an airport or a route. The closure of a satellite base alone does not tell passengers whether flights continue, how many are scheduled, or whether a destination is being dropped. Southwest’s statements about efficiency and reliability concerned its crew network; for Fort Lauderdale, the airline separately cited market conditions and underperforming capacity in its later filing.
Austin also illustrates why dates matter: the July 2025 closure was followed by a December announcement of a different, larger crew base planned for 2026. The later plan does not change what closed in July, and its announced staffing numbers should not be treated as completed hiring.
