South Korea’s National Tax Service (NTS), not police, reportedly exposed a cryptocurrency wallet’s mnemonic recovery phrase in an image accompanying a tax-seizure announcement. Reports said four million Pre-Retogeum (PRTG) tokens were transferred out afterward. The widely cited dollar value was an estimate at the time—not proof that anyone realized that amount in cash—and the available reporting does not establish whether the tokens were recovered.
What was disclosed
In 2026, the NTS announced a seizure operation involving 124 high-value or habitual tax delinquents. The operation was reported to cover assets worth 8.1 billion won in aggregate. Coverage by BleepingComputer and The Block said an image in the announcement showed a Ledger hardware wallet and a handwritten mnemonic recovery phrase.
A recovery phrase—also called a seed phrase or mnemonic—is a sequence of words that can restore access to a cryptocurrency wallet. It is not merely a password for the physical device: someone with the phrase may be able to control the wallet without possessing the Ledger itself. The incident was reported as exposure of the recovery phrase, not a hack of Ledger hardware.
What reportedly happened to the tokens
Contemporaneous reports said four million PRTG tokens moved out of the wallet shortly after the phrase became public. The Block cited blockchain analysis attributed to Cho Jae-woo, a professor at Hansung University’s Blockchain Research Institute. According to that account, a small amount of ETH was sent first to pay transaction fees, followed by three transfers of the PRTG tokens. The Block’s account reproduces Cho’s statement about the transfers.

The sequence is consistent with someone using access to move the assets, but the cited reports do not establish who controlled the destination wallets, whether the person was identified, or whether the tokens were converted to cash. Calling the recipient a thief or saying the money was taken and spent goes beyond what these sources confirm.
Why reports give different dollar values
Coverage commonly valued the four million tokens at approximately $4.8 million at the time of reporting. The assignment’s headline figure of $4.4 million appears in other coverage, including Futurism. These are reported market estimates using different valuation bases; neither establishes a realized sale price or a lasting value for the tokens. The better-established count is four million PRTG tokens.

The agency apologized, but the final outcome is unclear
The NTS reportedly apologized and said it would trace how the phrase was exposed, request an investigation, and strengthen measures to prevent a recurrence. Futurism reproduces an English translation of the agency’s March 1 statement and notes that Google translated it. The translation says the NTS would “immediately trace the leak route” and prepare measures to prevent recurrence. Because the original Korean statement is not available here, that English wording should be understood as a reported translation rather than an independently verified verbatim quotation. Futurism’s report also attributes to the NTS the admission that the incident was its fault.
The cited coverage does not establish the result of the investigation, whether any tokens were recovered, or what controls the agency ultimately adopted. An apology and stated plan are not evidence that the assets were returned.

What the incident shows about wallet custody
A hardware wallet can keep signing keys isolated from an internet-connected computer, but it cannot protect a recovery phrase that is disclosed to others. For organizations handling seized crypto, the incident illustrates why custody depends on more than the device: recovery credentials need controlled access, secure storage, and a review process for public materials that might reveal them. The reports do not show that any particular wallet product would have prevented the exposure.
