South Korea’s KOSPI was down 7.4% at 5,914.35 in an Associated Press snapshot on October 13, 2026, as semiconductor shares sold off amid investor concerns about the durability of the AI boom and competition from China’s CXMT. That was an intraday report—not a confirmed closing figure. Yonhap had reported a smaller fall earlier that morning, at 9:50 a.m. local time, during a fast-moving sell-off.
What happened to the KOSPI on October 13?
The index’s decline accelerated through the morning. The reports describe different points in that move, rather than conflicting closing figures:

|---|---|---|
| October 12 close | 6,384.24, down 3.65% (241.69 points) | Yonhap reported the KOSPI’s fourth consecutive losing session. |

| October 13, 9:50 a.m. local time | 6,127.15, down 4.03% (257.09 points) | Yonhap reported that the index had opened 3.1% lower. |
| October 13, AP report | 5,914.35, down 7.4% | The Associated Press described this as the index’s lowest level since late July. |
The AP said the KOSPI had reached an all-time high above 9,000 in June amid the global AI boom. The October 13 snapshot showed a sharp reversal from that peak, but the available reports do not establish the index’s final close that day.
Why were chip shares under pressure?
The Associated Press linked investor unease to doubts about how durable the AI boom would be and reports of advances by Chinese memory-chip maker CXMT. Those reports raised concern that CXMT could become a stronger competitor to established producers Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix and Micron. The AP reported Samsung shares down 7.7% and SK Hynix down 8.8% in its October 13 snapshot.

Yonhap’s account of the early sell-off also cited losses in U.S. technology stocks. It said investors were looking ahead to major-company earnings and U.S. inflation data. Those are reported influences on market sentiment, not measurements showing how much each factor contributed to the KOSPI’s decline. The reporting does not establish that the AI rally had ended.
What did the sidecar do—and did the exchange halt the market?
Yonhap reported that the Korea Exchange activated a sell-side sidecar at 9:48 a.m. local time on October 13, suspending program trading in KOSPI-listed shares for five minutes. The reported trigger was a fall of at least 5% in the KOSPI 200 Futures Index that lasted for at least one minute.

This was a temporary curb on program trading, not a shutdown of all trading across the market. The exchange action marks the severity of the futures move; it does not mean that every investor or every type of trading was stopped.
How did the sell-off build from the previous session?
Pressure was already visible on October 12, when the KOSPI closed at 6,384.24, down 3.65%, extending its losing streak to four sessions. Yonhap reported that foreign investors were net sellers of 2.02 trillion won that session, while individual investors were net buyers of 1.47 trillion won. Its report cited inflation concerns and elevated oil prices in the session’s backdrop.

Yonhap also quoted Lim Seung-mi, an analyst at Hana Securities Co., explaining the October 12 decline: “The KOSPI plunged amid rebalancing of semiconductor-focused exchange-traded funds (ETFs) and concerns that Samsung Electronics and SK hynix may have completed their treasury stock purchases,” That comment addressed the prior session; it should not be treated as a complete explanation of every move on October 13.

The figures show a steep intraday sell-off, especially in major chip shares, alongside a temporary program-trading curb. The reported explanations center on investor sentiment about AI demand and competition, weakness in U.S. technology stocks, and upcoming earnings and inflation data. They do not quantify the effect of any one factor or provide a causal study of the decline. Nor do the cited October 13 snapshots confirm where the index finished the day.
