South Korea’s KOSPI fell sharply on Tuesday, Oct. 13, 2026, as investors reassessed the outlook for artificial-intelligence spending, memory-chip competition and market flows. The sell-off hit Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix especially hard, and their combined weight in the index can magnify moves in chip stocks. The declines show rising concern—not proof that AI demand has ended or that the companies’ fundamentals have collapsed.
What happened on Oct. 13—and what happened the day before
The Associated Press reported that the KOSPI was down 7.4% at 5,914.35 on Tuesday, Oct. 13, its lowest level since late July. Samsung Electronics was down 7.7% and SK Hynix 8.8% in the same report. The 5,914.35 figure is an AP market snapshot; it should not be treated as a verified official closing level. The index had crossed 9,000 to reach an all-time high in June, propelled by the global AI boom.

That Tuesday snapshot followed a separate, steep decline on Monday, Oct. 12. SBS News reported that the KOSPI fell 3.65% that session, its sharpest daily drop in about a month. SBS said foreign investors were net sellers of about 2 trillion won and institutions of about 110 billion won, while individual investors bought nearly 1.5 trillion won. These are Monday’s session figures, not flows reported for Tuesday.

Because the market had already fallen from its June peak, the Tuesday decline was part of a broader correction rather than an isolated drop. The figures cited here do not establish the exact cumulative decline from that peak.

Why AI-related worries can move chip shares before sales change
Expectations about future investment
Chip valuations reflect expectations of future demand as well as current business results. If investors begin to question how much AI infrastructure companies will build, or how quickly spending will translate into returns, they may mark down semiconductor shares before any confirmed change in chip orders or reported sales. The reporting on these sessions describes investor unease; it does not establish that AI investment has stopped.
Competition in memory chips
The AP cited reports of advances by Chinese memory-chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) as one reason investors were concerned about stronger competition for Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron. That is a risk investors are weighing, not evidence in the cited report of the scale, timing or commercial effect of CXMT’s challenge.

Weakness in overseas semiconductor shares
SBS reported that the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 3.8% while South Korea’s market was closed for Hangeul Day. It also linked the return of investor worries to an OpenAI report of lower-than-expected revenue. SBS said the shortfall was later explained as a difference in accounting calculation methods, but investor confidence did not promptly recover. This is SBS’s account of the sequence, not an independent verification of OpenAI’s revenue or the reason for the KOSPI’s moves.
Why the KOSPI can be unusually sensitive to chip moves
South Korea’s exposure is concentrated in two major memory-chip companies. The Business Times, citing Bloomberg reporting, said Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix together represented more than half of KOSPI weighting. When both shares fall, their size can pull the index down substantially; when both rise, the same concentration can magnify gains. The market’s fortunes in the AI trade are therefore unusually dependent on these two companies, even though the index includes other businesses.

Flows can add to that sensitivity without being a direct measure of long-term demand. SBS reported that Samsung completed an approximately 15 trillion won treasury-share buyback program on Oct. 6 and that SK Hynix was near the end of its purchases. Buybacks can provide a source of share demand while they are underway; their completion or winding down may remove that support. SBS also reported foreign selling during Monday’s session. These flow factors are distinct from evidence about earnings, product demand or company finances. SBS’s English-language page notes that its translation is AI-generated and may contain errors.
A July review by South Korea’s Ministry of Finance and Economy described an earlier semiconductor-led sell-off as involving intensifying Chinese memory-chip competition, concerns about funding needs at major U.S. technology companies, weakening sentiment, unstable market flows and a correction after a sharp run-up. The ministry said sentiment and unstable flows largely amplified that earlier fall. This is the government’s assessment of the July episode, not an official explanation of the Oct. 13 decline.

What the sell-off does—and does not—say about Korea’s outlook
The Ministry of Finance and Economy’s July review also said Korea’s fundamentals remained solid at that time, citing robust exports of key products including semiconductors, upward revisions to corporate earnings forecasts and a widening current-account surplus. It cautioned against excessive concern about the outlook. That assessment is a dated counterpoint, not a guarantee about October conditions or a resolution of the risks investors are now pricing.
Investors also differ on how to assess Korean chip shares. The Business Times reported that some saw attractive earnings in Korean memory-chip companies, while others preferred Taiwan for its broader AI-supply-chain exposure and stronger earnings outlook. Those perspectives point to different questions rather than a settled winner: how concentrated an investment is in a few issuers, whether it covers memory or a wider range of AI hardware, how exposed it is to future infrastructure spending, and how share prices compare with earnings. The cited reporting does not provide a matched valuation dataset for a quantified Korea-versus-Taiwan comparison.

For readers tracking the news, the key distinction is between a sharp repricing of expectations and a confirmed deterioration in company results. The reported declines establish the former. Whether concerns about AI spending, competition and flows will be borne out in business performance remains uncertain.
