On 1 August 2005, U.S. flywheel-power company Pentadyne Power Corporation announced a distribution agreement with South Korean UPS manufacturer Ehwa Technologies Information (ETI). ETI was to make Pentadyne’s Voltage Support Solution VSS 120 available with many of its uninterruptible-power-supply models. The system was designed to replace or supplement lead-acid batteries for short power interruptions.
What the agreement covered
The reported arrangement paired Pentadyne’s flywheel energy-storage technology with ETI’s UPS product range in South Korea. The announcement identified ETI as a UPS manufacturer and said its high-performance ETUS line and environmentally focused Green UPS line were candidates for the VSS 120.
The report described a distribution relationship, not a merger or a transfer of manufacturing ownership. It also did not establish how long the agreement lasted, how many systems were sold, or whether either company or the product remains active today.
What Pentadyne’s VSS 120 was intended to do
The VSS 120 was a flywheel-based DC voltage source. Instead of storing energy electrochemically in batteries, a flywheel stores energy mechanically in a rapidly rotating mass and releases it when the UPS needs support.

Battery-replacement use
In the announced battery-replacement configuration, the VSS 120 was intended to supply ride-through power long enough for an orderly shutdown or until a standby engine-generator came online. That is a short-duration protection role rather than a claim of extended, battery-like runtime.
Hybrid use with batteries
In a hybrid UPS, the flywheel was intended to handle the immediate interruption while reducing the depth or frequency of battery discharge. The announcement said this could reduce stress on the batteries and preserve their capacity for longer outages. Those were manufacturer and announcement claims; the article did not provide independent test data.

kVA describes apparent power, while MW describes real power. They are not interchangeable without knowing the UPS power factor and operating conditions, so the two figures should not be treated as a direct one-unit-to-one-unit comparison.
How the flywheel and UPS batteries were supposed to work together
- Interruption detected: The UPS detects the loss or unacceptable variation of utility power.
- Flywheel responds: The VSS 120 supplies DC voltage immediately, supporting the UPS inverter during the transition.
- Backup decision: If a generator starts quickly, the flywheel can bridge the gap until generator power is available. If the outage is expected to last longer, batteries can provide the extended runtime.
- Battery preserved: In the hybrid concept described by the announcement, avoiding every short discharge leaves more battery capacity for a prolonged outage and may reduce battery wear.
The source does not specify the VSS 120’s exact ride-through duration, recharge time, flywheel speed, installation requirements, efficiency, service interval, or compatibility details for individual ETI UPS models. Those values would be essential in a procurement decision.

What the announcement does—and does not—show
- It documents a 2005 distribution agreement between Pentadyne and ETI.
- It identifies the VSS 120 as a flywheel voltage-support product for use with many ETI UPS models.
- It reports dated capacity claims of up to 225 kVA for one unit and up to 2 MW for parallel units.
- It records company statements about lower maintenance, environmental benefits, battery alternatives and cost effectiveness, but supplies no independent validation of those benefits.

Practical interpretation for a UPS buyer
The announcement describes an industrial short-duration ride-through architecture, not a consumer backup product or a general replacement for all batteries. A modern buyer evaluating a similar system would need to confirm the required ride-through time, load in kW and kVA, generator-start interval, battery chemistry, UPS controls, parallel-unit configuration, maintenance arrangements and local service coverage. None of those current purchasing details is provided by the 2005 report.
