The South African Airways (SAA) pilot strike most clearly documented by the airline began on 5 December 2024 and was suspended at 02:00 on 7 December. SAA said it kept a limited flight schedule while arranging passenger re-accommodation. A separate pilot work-to-rule action in March 2025 ended on 24 March. Those historical reports do not establish whether SAA flights are disrupted on 8 October 2026.

Is the SAA pilot strike still affecting flights?

The documented December 2024 strike was suspended on 7 December 2024, and SAA said the separate work-to-rule action ended on 24 March 2025. The available SAA statements cover those events, plus a June 2026 advisory about planned protests; they do not confirm SAA’s strike or flight status on 8 October 2026. A protest advisory is not evidence of pilot industrial action. For a flight today, check SAA’s current flight-status information and contact the airline about your booking rather than relying on a past strike notice.

SAA’s newsroom statements are the airline’s account of its negotiations, operations and passenger response, not an independent audit of those claims.

What happened in the December 2024 strike?

3 December: strike notice and competing pay positions

SAA said on 3 December that the South African Airways Pilots Association (SAAPA) had notified it of an intention to strike from 5 December after wage negotiations stalled. In its account, SAA described a revised salary demand of 15.7% and an offer of 8.46%, backdated to 1 April 2024. These are figures reported by the airline, not independently verified bargaining outcomes.

5 December: pilots begin strike action

SAAPA-affiliated pilots and members of the National Transport Movement (NTM) began striking on 5 December. SAA said not all pilots were participating, that it continued to operate a limited schedule, and that it was arranging re-accommodation for affected passengers.

6 December: SAA reports flight operations and passenger support

SAA reported operating 39 of 47 planned flights on the first day of the strike and named Cape Town, Durban, Gqeberha, Mauritius and Windhoek among the destinations served. The airline also described that count as 51% of planned flights, but 39 divided by 47 is about 83%, not 51%. The figures in SAA’s statement conflict, so neither should be treated as an independently confirmed operating rate.

SAA said it was helping passengers with re-accommodation, coordinating with codeshare and Star Alliance partners, and putting some passengers in hotels. Those statements describe the response to that historical disruption; they do not establish a current rebooking policy or entitlement.

7 December: strike suspended

SAA said negotiations with SAAPA led to the strike being suspended at 02:00 on 7 December. The airline said an additional 1% offer brought the total salary increase to 9.47%, and at the time expected a return to a 100% flight schedule by 8 December. The pay figure and schedule expectation were SAA’s announcements, not independent confirmation of what each passenger experienced.

How was the March 2025 action different?

In March 2025, SAA announced a separate work-to-rule action, effective 19 March, after receiving notice from SAAPA and the NTM Pilot Forum. Work-to-rule action is not the same event as the December 2024 strike, and the two should not be treated as one continuous stoppage. On 24 March, SAA said pilots had accepted its salary and benefits package and the action ended immediately. SAA’s annual report also describes the negotiations and industrial actions as finalized.

What should SAA passengers do if a strike disrupts a flight?

For the December 2024 episode, SAA directed passengers to its website and social channels for schedule updates and said it was arranging re-accommodation through SAA and partner airlines. For any present disruption, use current airline updates and ask SAA directly what options apply to your specific booking. The historical statements do not establish today’s flight status, rebooking terms or passenger entitlements.
