Re:

Sony’s Michael Jackson Deal, Queen, and the Biggest Reported Music Catalog Sales

Sony’s 2016 Jackson payment bought a publishing stake, not his whole catalog. Separate 2024 reports put a Jackson stake at about $600 million and Queen’s broader deal at £1 billion.

Sony’s 2016 payment of $750 million for the Michael Jackson estate’s remaining half of Sony/ATV Music Publishing was not a purchase of Jackson’s entire catalog. In 2024, Sony was separately reported to have agreed to pay about $600 million for half of a Jackson recordings-and-publishing catalog stake. Queen’s 2024 deal was reported at £1 billion, or about $1.27 billion at the time, for a broader package of rights that excluded Brian May and Roger Taylor’s live-performance income. These are among the biggest reported music-rights transactions, but their headline values are not directly comparable: each covers a different mix and share of assets.

How much did Sony pay for Michael Jackson’s catalog?

There were two separate Sony-Jackson transactions, involving different assets and occurring eight years apart.

The 2016 Sony/ATV purchase: $750 million

In March 2016, Sony and the Jackson estate announced an agreement for Sony to acquire the estate’s remaining 50% interest in Sony/ATV Music Publishing. Sony said the publishing joint venture had been established with Jackson in 1995. Sony’s September 2016 closing announcement put its total payments at $750 million.

That transaction did not include Jackson’s master recordings or Mijac Music, another substantial estate asset. The estate’s announcement explicitly excluded them. So the $750 million figure is the price Sony reported paying for the remaining Sony/ATV interest—not for Jackson’s entire personal catalog.

The reported 2024 deal: about $600 million for half

In February 2024, Axios, citing Billboard’s reporting, said Sony had agreed to pay around $600 million for a 50% stake in Jackson’s recording-music and publishing catalogs. The report said related productions, including the Broadway musical and Cirque du Soleil shows, were excluded. On that reported basis, the implied value of the catalog stake as a whole would exceed $1.2 billion.

The $600 million estimate and the implied total are reported terms, not a price or valuation confirmed in Sony’s own announcement in the sources available here. The 2024 report describes a distinct transaction from the 2016 Sony/ATV purchase; the earlier $750 million should not be added to, or substituted for, the later estimate as though both paid for the same rights.

How much did Queen sell its catalog for?

Variety reported in June 2024 that Sony was acquiring Queen’s catalog and other rights for £1 billion, then approximately $1.27 billion. Variety described the transaction as in process, and Sony did not announce that price in the sources available here.

Later evidence supports that Sony took control, while adding detail to the rights involved. Music Business Worldwide’s 2026 analysis of Rock Bidco’s first accounts reported that Sony began taking control in June 2024. It described the package as including Queen’s recorded-music rights outside North America, global publishing, name/image/likeness rights, and operating companies associated with touring, film and the We Will Rock You musical. It also reported that live income for May and Taylor was excluded.

The accounts showed £1.079 billion in funding from Sony’s parent as an “irrevocable, interest free advance subscription.” That is a company funding and accounting figure for the period ending June 30, 2025—not an amount established as cash paid directly to Queen’s sellers. It correlates with the reported deal value but should not be presented as a separately confirmed purchase price.

Why Queen’s rights package was not a simple worldwide catalog transfer

The rights had territorial and contractual complications. Variety reported that Disney held North American recorded-music rights and that Universal had a distribution arrangement. Music Business Worldwide’s later account analysis described Sony’s recorded-music rights as covering territories outside North America. A headline about a catalog sale therefore does not mean Sony immediately acquired every right worldwide on identical terms.

How the biggest reported music catalog deals compare

There is no definitive all-time ranking here: some prices are undisclosed, some are press estimates, and the deals cover different assets or fractions of them. The table compares several major transactions by what the cited reporting or announcements actually establish.

Transaction Reported or announced value Rights and share described What the figure establishes
Michael Jackson estate / Sony, 2016 $750 million, total payments reported by Sony at closing in September 2016 The estate’s remaining 50% of Sony/ATV Music Publishing; Jackson’s master recordings and Mijac Music were excluded. Sony’s announced total payments for this publishing interest, not a price for Jackson’s entire catalog.
Michael Jackson catalog stake / Sony, reported 2024 About $600 million for a 50% stake; Axios, citing Billboard, reported the terms in February 2024 A reported stake in recording-music and publishing catalogs; related productions such as the Broadway musical and Cirque du Soleil shows were excluded. A reported deal estimate. The implied value above $1.2 billion is a simple inference from the reported half-stake price, not a Sony-confirmed total valuation.
Queen / Sony, reported 2024 £1 billion (about $1.27 billion at the time), reported by Variety in June 2024 A broader package reported to include recorded-music and publishing rights and other rights; later accounts analysis described recorded-music rights outside North America, global publishing, name/image/likeness rights and associated companies. May and Taylor’s live income was excluded. A reported transaction value, not a price officially announced by Sony. Rock Bidco’s £1.079 billion funding entry is a separate accounting figure, not a confirmed cash price to sellers.
Bruce Springsteen / Sony, announced 2021 Sony’s announcement did not disclose a price; AP reported a $550 million estimate attributed to The New York Times in 2024 Sony announced acquisitions of Springsteen’s entire recorded-music and songwriting catalogs through separate agreements. Sony Music Publishing partnered with Eldridge on the songwriting catalog. The $550 million value is a reported estimate, not a price stated in Sony’s announcement.
Bob Dylan recorded-music catalog / Sony, announced 2022 Not stated in Sony’s January 2022 announcement Sony announced acquisition of Dylan’s recorded-music catalog from 1962 through 2020, plus rights to multiple future new releases. It was separate from Universal’s 2020 purchase of Dylan’s publishing rights. Sony confirmed the recorded-music acquisition but did not disclose its price in the announcement.

AP’s April 2024 overview of music-rights deals illustrates why lists of the “biggest” sales vary: reported prices may be estimates, confidential transactions cannot be ranked by a public number, and publishing, master recordings and broader rights packages are not equivalent. Its discussion of Dylan’s publishing sale concerns Universal’s separate 2020 deal, not Sony’s 2022 recorded-music acquisition.

What makes one catalog deal bigger than another?

A headline price alone does not reveal how much music or future income changed hands. Before comparing deals, check the share sold, rights included and any retained income or territorial limits.

  • Share of the assets: A buyer paying for 50% of a catalog is not acquiring the same stake as a buyer acquiring all of specified rights. The reported 2024 Jackson figure is for half of a stake.
  • Masters versus publishing: Master recordings are the recorded tracks; publishing concerns compositions and songwriting rights. A transaction can include one, the other or both. Sony’s 2016 Jackson deal was for a publishing interest, while the 2022 Dylan announcement concerned recorded music.
  • Ownership versus distribution: A distribution arrangement is not the same as ownership of the underlying recordings. Queen’s inherited North American rights and Universal arrangement make a single all-territories label misleading.
  • Ancillary rights and retained income: Name/image/likeness rights, related companies, future releases and live-performance income can affect a package’s scope. Queen’s reported deal included various non-live rights, while May and Taylor retained live income.
  • Price provenance: Sony disclosed the 2016 Jackson payments, but its cited Springsteen and Dylan announcements did not disclose prices. The Jackson 2024 and Queen 2024 figures come from reporting, and Springsteen’s widely repeated $550 million figure is an estimate cited by AP.

Are these the biggest music catalog sales of all time?

They belong among the largest reported music-rights transactions, but a precise all-time ranking would imply a consistency the public record does not provide. Some prices remain private; others are media estimates rather than confirmed sale prices. In addition, a broad package involving multiple rights and companies cannot be compared cleanly with a partial publishing interest or a recorded-music-only acquisition.

The clearest way to use these figures is to state both the amount and its scope: for example, $750 million for the estate’s remaining half of Sony/ATV in 2016, or a reported £1 billion for Queen’s broader package in 2024. Exchange rates, the date a value was reported and later company funding entries can further complicate comparisons. “Among the biggest reported deals” is more defensible than a definitive rank without a common valuation method and cutoff date.
