The Amazon discount in this headline was a historical offer, not a verified current price. PhoneArena reported on October 11, 2023, that Amazon had cut $202 (14%) from the 256GB unlocked U.S. Sony Xperia 1 V, with no Prime membership required at the time. That report does not establish today’s price, stock, seller, or terms.
What the Amazon deal was—and what it does not tell you now
PhoneArena’s October 11, 2023 report described a $202 reduction, or 14%, on the 256GB unlocked U.S. Xperia 1 V. It called this Amazon’s first large discount after an earlier $100 reduction and said shoppers did not need Prime to get the offer. Those terms describe the deal as reported then; they are not a current Amazon quote. PhoneArena’s 2023 deal report itself cautioned that deal conditions could change.
Sony announced an approximate U.S. launch price of $1,399.99 on May 11, 2023, and said first customer deliveries would begin July 28, 2023. That is the launch-price context for the deal story, not a reliable comparison price for a phone being sold today. “Overpriced” is a value judgment: whether the phone is worth its current asking price depends on the buyer’s priorities and the exact listing. Before buying from Amazon now
- Check the live price, availability, and whether the offer has conditions such as a coupon or membership requirement.
- Confirm the seller, whether the phone is new or refurbished, and what warranty applies.
- Verify that the listing is for the 256GB unlocked U.S. model if that is the configuration you want. Regional models can differ in compatibility and warranty.
What makes the Xperia 1 V different
The Xperia 1 V is aimed at people who value media and camera flexibility. Sony’s U.S. specifications list a 6.5-inch 4K HDR OLED screen at 3840 × 1644 resolution, with a 120Hz refresh rate. The display uses a tall 21:9 aspect ratio, which can suit cinematic content but may be less convenient for some video and everyday uses. Sony lists 256GB of internal storage, microSDXC expansion up to 1TB, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. Sony USA’s Xperia 1 V specifications

Camera hardware and capture features
Sony specifies a three-camera rear system: a 52MP full-aspect main sensor with 48MP effective resolution and 12MP still-image output, a 12MP telephoto camera with an 85–125mm range, and a 12MP 16mm ultrawide. The listed features include Eye AF, subject tracking, bursts up to 30 frames per second with autofocus and autoexposure, and 4K HDR video recording up to 120fps. These capabilities provide flexibility, but a long feature list does not guarantee a simple point-and-shoot experience.
Sony said the main sensor was about 1.7 times larger than the Xperia 1 IV’s main sensor and claimed approximately double the low-light performance compared with that predecessor. Those are Sony’s stated comparisons, not independent laboratory results. Sony’s launch announcement

How to judge whether it is worth the money
Start with the live total price and listing condition, then weigh the features you will actually use. There is no current competitor-price comparison established here, so a claim that the Xperia 1 V is cheaper or more expensive than today’s alternatives would need current pricing evidence.
- It may suit you if you specifically want a tall 21:9 display, manual-oriented camera controls, telephoto flexibility, a headphone jack, and expandable storage.
- It may be a poor fit if you want a lower purchase price, a more conventional screen shape, or a camera workflow designed to be straightforward with little adjustment.
- Check support and compatibility before committing to an older flagship. Current software and security support, network compatibility, and regional warranty details need verification for the exact model and market.
WIRED gave the phone 7/10 in its 2023 review. Its reviewer praised the screen, headphone jack, storage expansion, and camera potential, while noting camera-app complexity and drawbacks of the tall screen for some content. The reviewer said they assessed performance, heat, and battery life over two weeks; that is one reviewer’s experience, not a consensus score or a guarantee of another user’s results. Battery and accessories to factor in
Sony lists a 5,000mAh battery. Its launch announcement claimed approximately 20 hours of continuous video playback; that is a manufacturer estimate, not independently measured battery life. Actual endurance depends on use and settings. Sony’s launch announcement
