Sony is defending a UK competition claim over the pricing and distribution of digital PlayStation games and add-on content. The claimant estimates the case at about £2 billion including interest, which is the source of widely reported figures of roughly $2.7 billion.
But Sony has not been ordered to pay that money. The trial ended on May 8, 2026, and the Competition Appeal Tribunal’s case page stated that judgment was still pending as of August 18, 2026.

This is an opt-out collective proceeding. Instead of millions of consumers filing separate claims, a representative entity brings the case for a defined class of potentially affected consumers. What Sony is accused of doing
The claimant alleges that Sony has a dominant position in the supply of digital PlayStation games and add-on content, including downloadable content. Its case is that Sony requires these products for PlayStation consoles to be sold through the PlayStation Store, limiting meaningful competition between digital retailers.
The claim alleges that this control allowed Sony to impose excessive and unfair prices and pass allegedly excessive commissions or distribution costs on to consumers. These are allegations, not findings of fact. The Tribunal still has to decide whether Sony breached competition law and whether consumers suffered compensable losses.
Why market definition matters
The central issue is not simply whether Sony owns the PlayStation Store. The legal and economic question is whether Sony was dominant in the relevant market and whether its conduct caused an excessive charge.

Sony may argue that consumers had alternatives, including physical games, discounts, subscriptions, other consoles, PC gaming and purchases made through retailers. The claimant’s position is that those options may not be close substitutes for buying the digital version of a particular game or add-on for a consumer’s existing PlayStation. Whether they are sufficiently competitive alternatives is for the Tribunal to determine.

Why reports call it a $2.7 billion case
The claimant’s current estimate is approximately £2 billion including interest. The $2.7 billion figure is an approximate currency conversion and can change with exchange rates. It is not the amount of a court judgment.
Earlier procedural materials referred to a possible damages range of £600 million to £5 billion excluding interest. That older range should not be treated as the current amount sought, an established loss or money Sony has been found to owe.
The claimant’s FAQ gives indicative individual figures of £137 excluding interest or £182 including interest. Those figures are estimates only. They are not guaranteed payments, and any damages would need to be assessed under a later Tribunal process if the claim succeeds. See the claimant’s official FAQ.
Who could be covered?
The claimant says the proposed class contains approximately 12.2 million UK PlayStation users. That does not mean every UK PlayStation owner will receive compensation.

Has Sony lost the case?
No. The case has not been finally decided.
In November 2023, the Tribunal rejected Sony’s attempt to strike out the claim or obtain summary judgment. That decision allowed the case to proceed; it did not establish that Sony had violated competition law.
The case later involved disputes about litigation funding and collective-proceedings rules. The UK Supreme Court’s PACCAR decision held that certain funding agreements based on a percentage of damages were unenforceable for opt-out collective proceedings. The funding arrangements in this litigation were subsequently amended and considered through the appellate process. The Court of Appeal issued a relevant judgment on July 4, 2025, available through the Judiciary website.
The trial ran from March 10 to May 8, 2026. As of August 18, 2026, the Tribunal’s case page said judgment was pending.

The Tribunal could find liability but award less than £2 billion, or it could reject the claim. Litigation may also continue after the first judgment through appeals or settlement discussions.
What should consumers watch out for?
Do not pay a third party to join the claim or provide bank-card details to an unofficial compensation website. A social-media post claiming that Sony is paying out does not prove that the Tribunal has issued judgment.

The practical answer for PlayStation users
This is a real UK opt-out competition claim, not a completed class-action settlement. The £2 billion estimate is the claimant’s figure, and the frequently quoted $2.7 billion is only an approximate conversion. No final liability finding or compensation award had been announced as of August 18, 2026.
Qualifying users who did not opt out are generally described by the claimant as included automatically, so there is no stated need to pay or submit a new claim at this stage. Any future payment would depend on the Tribunal’s judgment, damages assessment, possible appeals or settlement, and later distribution instructions.
