Sonos CEO Patrick Spence apologized on July 25, 2024, for the troubled app redesign released on May 7. He said bugs and stability problems had delayed the return of missing functions and promised software releases roughly every two weeks. That announcement was a recovery plan—not evidence that the app was already fixed—and it matters to owners deciding whether to wait, seek support, or spend money on another audio system.

What happened to the Sonos app

Sonos replaced its mobile and web controller with a substantially redesigned app on May 7, 2024. The company said the new foundation would support a more modern, customizable experience and future product expansion. In practice, many customers reported slow or unreliable controls, missing functions, playback errors and difficulty discovering speakers.

The hardware itself did not necessarily fail. The disruption was often in the control layer: owners could still have working speakers but lose dependable access to grouping, playback, settings or other everyday functions through the app. Sonos’s official account is available in its July 25 statement.

What Patrick Spence apologized for

Spence said customers were experiencing “significant problems,” that the experience had fallen short of Sonos’s standards, and that the company had found more issues than expected after launch. He acknowledged delayed restoration of functionality, impacts on partners and the need to regain customer trust.

#1 Best Overall
Sonos Beam Gen 2 - Black - Soundbar with Dolby Atmos
  • Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
  • Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
  • Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
  • Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
  • Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.

That is what Sonos explicitly admitted. The statement did not explicitly say that every disputed function had been deliberately removed, that the launch should have been postponed, or that testing was inadequate. Customers and critics nevertheless experienced the redesign as a regression because functions that had worked in the previous app were unavailable or unreliable.

Sonos’s promised repair schedule

Sonos used the word “fortnightly,” meaning approximately every two weeks. It said releases had already been arriving on that approximate cadence and promised detailed notes in the Sonos Community for each update. The schedule used broad month ranges, not guaranteed delivery dates.

Period named by Sonos Targeted work
July–August 2024 Improve stability when adding products; restore Music Library configuration, browsing, searching and playback.
August–September 2024 Make volume controls more responsive; improve the interface, system stability and error handling.
September 2024 Make alarms more consistent and reliable.
September–October 2024 Restore playlist and queue editing and improve Settings.

The roadmap covered named workstreams, not a blanket promise that every complaint would disappear by October. A release could restore a feature while leaving other bugs unresolved.

Which functions were missing or impaired

Music libraries and playback

Sonos specifically listed local Music Library setup, browsing, searching and playback for restoration. Local libraries can also depend on network shares, permissions, indexing and metadata, so a failure in this area is not automatically caused by the app alone.

Volume, discovery and product setup

Volume response and adding new products were on the roadmap. Independent coverage also recorded reports of speakers not appearing reliably, delayed or inaccurate volume displays, and playback commands that did not behave as expected.

Queues, playlists, alarms and settings

Playlist and queue edit mode, alarm reliability and Settings were separately identified for work. Reported experiences included unexpected song selection, difficulty changing inputs or sources, and podcasts moving to the wrong episode. These were reported user experiences, not proof that every system or product behaved that way.

Sonos Ray - Compact Soundbar for TV and Music - Black
  • Experience clearer, more powerful sound than ever before possible by a small standalone soundbar.
  • Dynamic sound that enhances the drama and creates a surprisingly wide soundstage.
  • Zero-stress setup with only two cables and help from the Sonos app.
  • Stream all your content from your favorite services over WiFi using the Sonos app, Apple AirPlay 2, Spotify Connect, and more.

Platform, product and network differences matter. iOS and Android builds can differ; the web and mobile controllers may expose different controls; and Wi-Fi isolation, VLANs, VPNs, mesh networks or app permissions can produce “no products found” symptoms independently of the redesign.

Why the apology did not end the controversy

The announcement acknowledged harm but asked customers to wait months for basic controls. It also left important questions open: whether a behavior was a new bug, a temporarily unavailable feature, a redesigned interaction, or a function Sonos had not committed to restore.

Independent reporting argued that Sonos accelerated the redesign as part of a broader move beyond traditional home speakers, including preparation for headphones. That is reported strategic analysis, not an explicit admission in Spence’s apology. Sonos’s official explanation focused on building a better foundation for future innovation.

Sonos Beam Gen 2 - White - Soundbar with Dolby Atmos
  • Enrich your entertainment experience with vibrant bass, crystal clear dialogue, and a panoramic soundstage.
  • Experience a 3D surround sound effect with Dolby Atmos.
  • Stream music, radio, podcasts, and audiobooks from all your favorite services when the TV is off.
  • Control with the Sonos app, your TV remote, Apple AirPlay 2, and your voice.
  • Effortless setup with only two cables and smart Trueplay tuning.

Contemporaneous customer reactions in the Sonos Community illustrate why the distinction mattered: users judged the change by lost capabilities, regardless of the internal cause.

What existing owners should do

  1. Check current information. This was a July 2024 roadmap. Review the latest app and speaker release notes at Sonos Support rather than assuming the 2024 status still applies in 2026.
  2. Update both sides of the system. Install the current controller and speaker firmware, then record whether the issue occurs on iOS, Android, macOS, Windows or the web app.
  3. Isolate the failure. Note whether it affects one speaker, a group, a music service, local files or the whole system. A service outage, account authentication problem or network configuration can resemble an app defect.
  4. Use support for account and network cases. A support agent may resolve an individual setup problem, but cannot independently guarantee the company’s broader roadmap.
  5. Avoid destructive resets. Reinstalling can clear local corruption but cannot restore an unimplemented feature. Factory-resetting speakers creates additional setup work and should not be a first response to a software regression unless Sonos instructs you to do it. Do not rely on an old-app downgrade unless Sonos officially supports that path.

When waiting makes financial sense—and when it does not

Waiting may be reasonable when

  • Your speakers still work through other officially supported playback methods.
  • Your required function appears in the roadmap and you can tolerate temporary inconvenience.
  • Replacing a multi-room system would cost substantially more than waiting.
  • You do not depend on alarms, local-library playback, queue editing or rapid multi-room control.

Consider alternatives when

  • The controller app is the main reason you are buying into a multi-room ecosystem.
  • Reliable alarms, local music or queue management are essential.
  • Your household needs consistent control across iOS and Android.
  • You are still within a retailer’s return period or are considering a new purchase.
  • The system supports a business, accessibility-sensitive environment or other use where control failures are unacceptable.

What prospective buyers should evaluate

Sonos ownership combines hardware with a vendor-controlled software experience. Before spending more, verify current release notes, supported services, operating-system requirements and the retailer’s return policy. Test the specific functions you need—such as alarms, local libraries, queue editing and adding products—rather than assuming every Sonos model behaves identically.

Buying additional Sonos hardware can be sensible for an owner who confirms that the current app meets their needs. It is a poor financial hedge against app dependence: adding more products increases the amount of hardware tied to the same controller ecosystem.

Sonos Arc Ultra soundbar + Sub 4 subwoofer - Black
  • Surround yourself in the story: Go deeper into every scene with spatial audio. Dolby Atmos and the upward-firing drivers work in concert to immerse you in a multidimensional soundstage. You’ll hear planes as if they’re flying overhead, sense footsteps moving across the room, and feel the music swell all around you.
  • Feel the bass: Experience every rumble, roar, and beat you've been missing with clean, pulse-pounding bass. Sub 4 takes over the lowest frequencies so paired speakers are free to focus on midrange and high frequencies so everything sounds even clearer.
  • Wonderfully wireless: Place Sub 4 anywhere in the room. It connects to the soundbar over WiFi, so you can create the setup that works best for your space.
  • Perfectly tuned for the room: Using the microphones in your iOS device, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
  • Breeze through setup: Simply plug in the power cable, connect your phone or tablet to WiFi, and open the Sonos app. It will guide you through connecting the soundbar to your TV and syncing your TV remote for streamlined control.

Possible ecosystem alternatives

Option Potential fit Important trade-off
Apple HomePod Households invested in Apple devices and AirPlay. Less suitable where broad Android or vendor-neutral control is required.
Bose smart speakers and soundbars Buyers prioritizing standalone speakers or soundbars in another vendor ecosystem. Not automatically a one-for-one Sonos replacement; grouping and service support vary by product.
Bluesound Enthusiasts seeking networked audio and deeper system configuration. Can be more expensive and less mainstream, with greater setup complexity.

Current prices, promotions and availability vary by region and date. Check the official Sonos store and each alternative’s site before making a purchase.

The practical verdict

Spence’s apology was significant because Sonos accepted responsibility and published a concrete recovery sequence. But “roughly every two weeks” described a release cadence, not a guarantee of a fix, and the month ranges did not promise that every defect would be resolved. The meaningful test was delivery: whether the company restored dependable control and rebuilt trust without requiring customers to replace functioning hardware.
