Sonos confirmed on August 14, 2024, that it was eliminating approximately 100 positions—about 6% of its workforce. Patrick Spence was Sonos’ CEO at the time and said the cuts were intended to preserve investment in the company’s product roadmap and support its long-term position.
This was a confirmed 2024 workforce reduction, not a current announcement. Spence left Sonos in January 2025, and the company announced a separate, larger reduction of approximately 200 positions the following month.

TechCrunch reported Sonos’ confirmation and Spence’s statement on the date of the announcement. Sonos’ later filings separately identified the August 2024 reduction as approximately 6% of its workforce.
Why Sonos said it was cutting jobs
Sonos said the workforce reduction was intended to reduce costs while allowing the company to continue investing in its product roadmap and position itself for long-term success. The company also said the cuts would not prevent it from continuing its effort to address problems with its redesigned mobile app.
Those are Sonos’ stated reasons and expectations—not independently established evidence that the layoffs improved financial performance, accelerated product development, or solved the company’s operating problems.

How the troubled app fit into the timing
The layoffs followed Sonos’ release of a redesigned mobile app in May 2024. The update attracted substantial customer criticism and was associated with operational problems affecting the user experience. Spence discussed the continuing app issues during Sonos’ third-quarter earnings call shortly before the layoffs.
The timing places the workforce reduction in the same broader period as Sonos’ app-recovery effort. However, the available evidence does not establish that the app alone caused the layoffs. A more accurate description is that the cuts followed a difficult app rollout while Sonos was publicly emphasizing recovery, customer experience, and continued product investment.
This was not Sonos’ first recent reduction
The August 2024 action followed an earlier reduction of approximately 7% of Sonos’ workforce in 2023, according to contemporaneous reporting. Sonos’ later filings identify the 2024 reduction and the subsequent 2025 reduction as separate restructuring plans.

What happened to Patrick Spence and Sonos afterward?
Patrick Spence was Sonos’ CEO when the 100-position reduction was announced, but he is no longer the company’s chief executive.
- August 14, 2024: Sonos confirms approximately 100 job cuts, representing about 6% of its workforce.
- January 13, 2025: Spence steps down as CEO and leaves Sonos’ board. Tom Conrad becomes interim CEO. The change was disclosed in a Sonos SEC filing.
- February 5, 2025: Sonos announces a separate reorganization affecting approximately 12% of employees, described by the company as about 200 positions. Sonos’ employee letter and a SEC filing document the action.
- July 2025: Sonos identifies Tom Conrad as CEO after his interim tenure, according to the company’s fiscal 2025 filing.
The February 2025 reduction should not be described as the same event as the August 2024 cuts. The two actions were announced months apart and were separately described in Sonos’ filings.
Did the 2024 layoffs affect Sonos products or support?
Sonos said the 2024 reduction would not prevent it from continuing the app-recovery effort or delivering on its product promise. That was the company’s stated intention, not proof that customers experienced no effect.

The available sources do not establish whether the layoffs delayed specific products, changed customer-support performance, or produced a measurable improvement in the app. They also do not provide a reliable basis for saying the cuts saved a particular amount of money.
For the later February 2025 restructuring, Sonos estimated approximately $15 million to $18 million in restructuring and related charges, substantially related to severance and benefits. That estimate should not be assigned to the August 2024 reduction.

The 2024 layoffs were a real, company-confirmed cost-cutting action, but they should be interpreted in the context of a broader restructuring timeline. The announcement showed that Sonos was trying to control costs while maintaining investment in products and repairing its app experience. It did not by itself prove that Sonos products were unsupported or that the company was exiting the market.

- With a tap in the Sonos app, Trueplay tuning technology analyzes the unique acoustics of your space and optimizes the speaker’s EQ. So all your content sounds just the way it should.
For customers considering Sonos hardware, the layoffs are best treated as one risk signal rather than a standalone verdict. The more relevant questions are whether the current app experience meets your needs, how dependent you are on the Sonos ecosystem, and whether you are comfortable with a platform that has undergone significant leadership and workforce changes.
Readers should also avoid confusing the 2024 announcement with the later 2025 reduction. The most accurate summary is: Sonos cut approximately 100 positions in August 2024, then announced a separate reduction of approximately 200 positions in February 2025.
