Solace announced a $1.745 million seed round on June 2, 2021, to expand its direct-cremation service, hire staff and improve its digital infrastructure. The Portland startup’s pitch combined online arrangements and straightforward pricing with help from funeral professionals. Foundation Partners Group acquired Solace in 2022, and the Solace website now directs customers to Tulip Cremation.
How much did Solace raise, and who invested?
Solace announced $1.745 million in seed funding on June 2, 2021. The company said the oversubscribed round was led by Rogue Venture Partners, with Cascade Seed Fund and Alliance of Angels also participating. Solace said it planned to use the capital for geographic expansion, hiring and improvements to its digital infrastructure. Solace’s June 2, 2021 announcement
What was Solace’s digital cremation model?
Solace described its service as an online way to arrange direct cremation, designed to simplify both the process and pricing without removing access to human support. Its 2021 company release said the mobile-friendly arrangement process could take less than five minutes. The company listed customer care, a funeral director and staff, paperwork assistance, transportation, cremation, return of remains and permits among the services included at that time. These were Solace’s descriptions of its own offering, not independent assessments.
The model aimed to make arrangements easier to complete online while bundling practical services and assistance. In an interview with GeekWire, Solace CEO Keith Crawford described his motivation as a reaction to funeral arrangements he viewed as dated: “I left that experience thinking, ‘It’s so strange to me why this industry feels very stuck in time and not evolving and not modernizing and not putting the family first and foremost,’” That was Crawford’s perspective, not a finding about every funeral provider. What did Solace’s reported prices and market figures mean?
Solace’s June 2021 funding release stated a $995 flat fee. Contemporaneous GeekWire coverage reported a different Solace flat fee, $895, while Solace’s still-accessible about page displays $1,195. These are figures from different sources or pages, not a single verified or current Solace price; they should not be treated as interchangeable.
The company’s 2021 release also described the U.S. funeral business as a $28 billion market and said U.S. cremation services were growing by 3% to 5% annually. Both are company-reported figures from that announcement, rather than independently validated market estimates.

What happened to Solace after the funding round?
Foundation Partners Group announced that it acquired Solace Cremation on November 2, 2022, and added the brand to its existing digital service, Tulip Cremation. Solace’s website now states, “Solace Cremation is now Tulip Cremation,” and directs existing customers to a support phone number. Solace should therefore be understood as an acquired brand, not as an independent startup currently raising its 2021 round. Foundation Partners Group’s acquisition announcement
Tulip’s current pricing page lists a starting direct-cremation price of $895 in Arizona and says prices vary by state. That is a location-specific Tulip price, not a national rate or a current Solace price. Tulip Cremation pricing
