Neither title is automatically better. “Software engineer” and “software developer” overlap substantially, and employers do not use them consistently. Compare the actual duties, pay, growth path, and expectations in each job posting—not the title by itself.
What is the difference between a software engineer and a software developer?
In the United States, the titles are not a reliable dividing line between two separate occupations. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes software developers as designing applications and programs, while noting that software engineers take a broader view of system and software requirements and may plan project scope and work sequence. O*NET lists both “Software Engineer” and “Software Developer” among reported titles for the Software Developers occupation.
That suggests a useful distinction in some workplaces, not a universal rule. Engineering may involve more system-level planning and coordination; development may emphasize building and maintaining applications. But the same employee can do both, and a job title alone does not establish the balance.
What software developers do
BLS describes a broad delivery role: analyzing user needs; designing applications or systems; recommending upgrades; modeling or diagramming how software should work; documenting systems; and supporting maintenance and testing. Some developers write code directly; others work from designs or instructions. The work is not limited to programming.

What software engineers may do
Where an employer uses “engineer” to signal broader responsibility, the role may include architecture and system design, requirements planning, reliability, security, scalability, testing strategy, and coordination across teams. These responsibilities are worth looking for in the posting; they are not guaranteed by the word “engineer.”
Which title is better for your career?
Choose the stronger opportunity, not the title that sounds more prestigious. A role is a better fit when its day-to-day work, compensation, learning opportunities, and advancement path match your goals. Compare the actual terms of the offers or postings across these dimensions:

- Compact for travelling
- Scope: Does the work focus on a feature or application, or span multiple services and systems?
- Design authority: Will you implement an existing design, contribute to it, or own architecture and system decisions?
- Work mix: How much time goes to coding, reviews, planning, documentation, testing, and coordination?
- Operational responsibility: Are you accountable for reliability, security, performance, or production support?
- Seniority and decisions: What decisions can you make, and what level of independence does the role expect?
- Growth path: Which skills will you build, and what roles do people move into from this position?
- Practical terms: Compare compensation, location, required experience and education, technologies, and the product or industry.
If you want to develop broader system-level judgment, favor roles that explicitly assign architecture, scalability, reliability, security, or cross-team technical decisions. If you prefer owning implementation and delivery, look for clear responsibility for product features, testing, maintenance, and user-facing outcomes. Those paths can overlap, and neither title guarantees one.
Do software engineers make more money?
The available U.S. occupation-level figures do not establish that employers pay a premium for the “software engineer” title over “software developer.” BLS reported a $135,980 median annual wage for software developers in 2025. That is an occupation-wide U.S. median, not a salary comparison between the two titles or a guarantee of an individual offer. Pay can vary with responsibilities, experience, employer, industry, and location, so compare compensation for the specific roles you are considering.

What education and skills do both roles require?
The preparation often overlaps as much as the work. BLS says software developers typically need a bachelor’s degree in computer and information technology or a related field. Employers’ requirements vary, so read the posting rather than assuming a title dictates a particular credential.
Relevant capabilities include programming knowledge, analytical thinking, problem-solving, communication, creativity, attention to detail, and interpersonal skills. Engineering-leaning roles may place additional emphasis on system design and balancing technical constraints; development-leaning roles may emphasize implementing, testing, and maintaining software. These are tendencies to verify against the employer’s stated expectations.

Is the software career outlook strong?
For the United States, BLS projected employment of software developers, quality assurance analysts, and testers to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, with about 106,100 openings per year across that broader group. These are projections for the combined occupational group, not separate forecasts for software engineers and software developers. They indicate a favorable outlook for the group, but do not predict an individual’s job prospects.
