Social Security’s October 2026 Announcement: What’s Confirmed, What Isn’t and What Could Change in 2027

SSA has confirmed an October 2026 COLA announcement, but no official source yet verifies three specific Social Security changes or a final 2027 percentage.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has confirmed that it will announce the next cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) in October 2026. However, official information does not verify the headline’s claim that three specific changes will be announced this week. The final 2027 percentage and wage-indexed amounts are not yet available.

What SSA has actually confirmed

SSA’s COLA page states: “We will announce the next COLA in October 2026.” That identifies the month, not a particular day or week. The previous COLA was determined on October 24, 2025.

SSA also explains that several important Social Security parameters are determined each October under formulas set by law. These include the COLA and wage-indexed amounts. They are recurring annual calculations, not necessarily new legislation or a package of three policy changes.

What the October announcement affects

The COLA changes benefit payments

The COLA applies to Social Security retirement, survivor and disability benefits, as well as Supplemental Security Income (SSI). SSA calculates it from the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), comparing the third quarter of the last year in which a COLA was determined with the third quarter of the current year. If the relevant index does not rise, there is no COLA.

A COLA for a calendar year is effective for December of that year and payable in January of the following year. Therefore, the COLA announced in October 2026 will generally affect benefits payable in January 2027, although the effective month is December 2026.

Wage-indexed amounts affect workers and benefit formulas

The national average wage index is used to adjust earnings for initial benefit calculations and to set other wage-indexed limits. These figures can affect workers who are paying Social Security taxes, people claiming benefits, and the formulas used to calculate future benefits. They are distinct from the COLA: a COLA raises current payments, while wage indexing primarily changes thresholds and calculation inputs.

There is no official 2027 percentage yet

The 2026 COLA was 2.8%, based on CPI-W movement from the third quarter of 2024 through the third quarter of 2025. That is a 2026 figure and should not be described as the 2027 increase.

SSA’s 2026 Trustees Report lists a 2.4% COLA estimate and a 4.0% average-wage-index estimate for 2027 under its intermediate assumptions. These are actuarial projections, not final automatic determinations. The final COLA depends on the CPI-W data available for the relevant third quarter and will be announced by SSA in October 2026.

2026 figures that should not be mistaken for 2027 changes

SSA’s 2026 fact sheet provides the following amounts. They are useful context, but none is a confirmed 2027 number.

Item 2026 amount Who it affects and qualification
Social Security COLA 2.8% Actual 2026 increase, calculated from third-quarter CPI-W data for 2024 and 2025
OASDI taxable maximum $184,500 Maximum earnings subject to Social Security tax in 2026
Earnings-test exempt amount $24,480 per year ($2,040 per month) For a person below full retirement age throughout 2026; $1 in benefits is withheld for each $2 earned above the limit
Earnings-test exempt amount $65,160 per year ($5,430 per month) For a person reaching full retirement age during 2026, applying to months before that age; $1 is withheld for each $3 above the limit
Federal SSI payment standard $994 per month individual; $1,491 per month couple 2026 federal standards listed by SSA

Will your Social Security check change in 2027?

Most beneficiaries should expect a change if SSA announces a positive COLA. The size of that change will depend on the final percentage and each person’s benefit amount. A higher gross benefit can also interact with Medicare premiums, taxes and other deductions. Medicare changes are handled through Medicare.gov and should not be treated as part of SSA’s confirmed Social Security adjustment announcement.

Workers and future retirees may see different effects. A new taxable maximum changes how much earnings are subject to the 6.2% employee Social Security tax, while revised earnings-test limits determine how much someone can earn while claiming benefits before full retirement age without triggering withholding. Neither outcome can be stated for 2027 until SSA publishes the applicable amounts.

How to evaluate claims about “three big changes”

  1. Check the date and agency. A genuine announcement should come from SSA and identify whether the number is final or projected.
  2. Separate payment changes from worker thresholds. The COLA, taxable maximum and earnings-test limits serve different purposes and affect different groups.
  3. Keep the year attached to every number. The 2026 fact-sheet amounts do not become 2027 figures merely because they are discussed after the October announcement.
  4. Distinguish estimates from determinations. Trustees Report projections use assumptions; the October COLA and wage-indexed amounts are the official annual determinations.

What to watch for in October 2026

The useful information will be the final COLA percentage, the updated taxable maximum, revised earnings-test limits and any updated SSI standards. SSA’s announcement should also clarify the effective year and payment timing. Until those figures are published, a headline promising exactly three surprising changes is unverified. The confirmed news is the October announcement window and the routine annual adjustment process established by law.
