IDC calls that the steepest annual contraction in smartphone history. The headline needs a qualification: most industry data measures manufacturer shipments, not completed consumer purchases. And fewer phones shipped does not necessarily mean lower industry revenue—higher prices may push the market’s total value up.
What “biggest drop ever” actually means
Three different measures are being discussed:
- Worst annual percentage decline: IDC forecasts a 13.9% year-over-year fall in global shipments in 2026, revising its February forecast of a 12.9% decline. IDC describes the new estimate as the largest annual contraction on record: IDC’s August 2026 forecast.
- Lowest annual volume in more than a decade: IDC expects approximately 1.09 billion units.
- Severe quarterly weakness: Counterpoint says preliminary second-quarter 2026 sell-in shipments fell 11% year over year, the lowest second-quarter level since 2013: Counterpoint’s Q2 2026 data.
These are not interchangeable claims. An annual percentage record, a low absolute total and a weak quarter describe different aspects of the downturn.
Why the smartphone market is shrinking
Memory has become the immediate bottleneck
Every smartphone needs DRAM for active applications and NAND for storage. Memory suppliers are allocating more capacity to artificial-intelligence data centers, where server demand and high-bandwidth memory are growing rapidly. That competition is contributing to tighter supply and higher prices for the conventional memory components used in phones, according to Counterpoint and Omdia.
Omdia reports that average DRAM and NAND prices rose by more than 80% quarter over quarter in the first quarter of 2026. Counterpoint says prices continued rising through the second quarter.

Why cheap phones are hit first
Entry-level models—especially those priced below $200—operate on thin margins. A large bill-of-materials increase can make a model uneconomic. Vendors then have four choices:
- Raise the retail price.
- Accept a lower margin.
- Reduce RAM, storage or other specifications.
- Cut production or withdraw the model.
AI demand is therefore an indirect pressure on ordinary buyers: data-center investment competes for memory capacity, which raises the cost of consumer devices. It is not evidence that AI features inside phones alone caused the downturn.
Other pressures add to the squeeze
IDC and Counterpoint also point to transportation and oil costs, geopolitical disruption, inflation and weaker consumer confidence. Those factors reinforce the memory shock, but memory availability and pricing are the clearest common explanation in the current forecasts.
How large could the decline be?
Analysts agree on a historic contraction but not on one exact number. Their estimates use different market models and definitions.

The precise result remains uncertain. The consistent message is that 2026 is likely to be a major unit downturn, not that every analyst expects the same percentage.
Fewer phones can still mean a larger market
Shipment volume and market revenue measure different things. Omdia expects shipments to fall 12.2% while total market value rises 6.1%, because the average phone price increases. IDC’s $550 average-selling-price forecast and Gartner’s 13% price forecast point in the same direction, although the methodologies are not directly comparable.
This is why “sales are collapsing” can be misleading. A manufacturer may ship fewer units but collect more revenue if it sells a larger mix of premium phones at higher prices. Revenue growth also does not prove that consumer demand is healthy or that manufacturers’ profits are rising; component costs may be consuming much of the increase.
Which buyers and regions are most exposed?
The pain is concentrated where sub-$200 phones make up a large share of demand. IDC’s regional forecasts are:

Gartner expects basic-smartphone buyers to leave the market—or postpone, refurbish or retain their current devices—five times faster than premium buyers in 2026.
What happens to Apple, Samsung and Android?
Apple and Samsung are better positioned, not immune
Preliminary Counterpoint data gives Samsung 24% of global shipments in the second quarter and Apple 20%, with Apple shipments up 3% year over year. IDC’s first-quarter data also showed both companies growing while Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo declined. IDC recorded Samsung at 21.2% share (62.4 million units) and Apple at 21.0% (61.8 million units) in Q1: IDC’s market-share table.
Premium exposure, stronger balance sheets, better access to components, and established trade-in, financing, carrier and ecosystem programs can help these companies gain share in a shrinking market. They can still face weaker upgrades, higher costs and lower unit demand; “safe” would overstate the evidence.
Android is not one uniform business
IDC forecasts an approximately 20%–21% decline for Android overall, but its segments differ sharply. Premium Samsung models may gain share, while Chinese brands with heavy entry- and midrange exposure are more vulnerable. Counterpoint reports that Xiaomi, OPPO and vivo suffered double-digit declines in the second quarter. Google reportedly grew in Q2, helped by Pixel 10 and Pixel 10a, while Huawei’s China-focused HarmonyOS strategy is another market-specific exception.

The likely result is consolidation: fewer low-margin Android models and a larger share for vendors able to fund inventory, software support and promotions.

- Fewer new phones below $200.
- Higher prices or less RAM and storage in base configurations.
- More older-generation models sold as value alternatives.
- Longer replacement cycles and more battery or screen repairs.
- Greater use of trade-in and financing offers for premium phones.
- More demand for refurbished and second-hand devices.
A postponed purchase is not necessarily a permanently lost sale. Demand could return if memory prices stabilize, promotions improve or a new form factor creates a compelling reason to upgrade.
Are refurbished phones the main budget alternative?
Refurbished devices may benefit as new entry-level phones become more expensive and buyers keep phones longer. Previous-generation premium models can offer better cameras, processors and support than a new low-end phone at a similar price.
Check these items before buying:
- Battery health and the cost of a replacement.
- Remaining operating-system and security-update support.
- Carrier, band and eSIM or physical-SIM compatibility.
- Warranty length, return period and grading definition.
- Water-resistance coverage after repair.
- Activation-lock status and whether an unofficial seller has an unpaid financing balance.
Refurbished pricing and quality vary by model, condition and seller; the forecasts identify the category as a likely beneficiary, not a guarantee of a particular discount or retailer experience.

Should you buy now, repair or wait?
Repair first when the phone is otherwise supported
A battery, screen or charging-port repair can cost less than entering a market with higher new-device prices. Repair is a weaker choice for phones with expired security support, major water or logic-board damage, or a repair quote close to replacement cost. Official starting points include Apple repair, Samsung service and Google repair.
If you need a replacement now
- Compare a previous-generation premium phone with a current budget model.
- Compare storage and RAM at the same capacity; a low headline price can hide a cut-down base configuration.
- Calculate the total financed amount, not just the monthly payment.
- Value update longevity, resale value, repairability and parts access over a three- to five-year ownership period.
- Use trade-in offers carefully: the headline value may require a carrier plan or other lock-in.
If you can wait
Waiting may bring discounts or improved memory availability, but a meaningful volume recovery is not expected immediately. It is a bet on prices and supply improving rather than a guaranteed saving.
How long could the downturn last?
Forecasts suggest another weak year before a possible recovery:
- IDC expects a further 1.1% shipment decline in 2027, followed by a 5.5% rebound in 2028.
- Omdia expects a smaller 0.9% decline in 2027, with meaningful volume recovery beginning in 2028.
Omdia expects memory-price stabilization toward the second half of 2027 and broader supply-capacity improvement around 2028. Those dates are scenarios, not a timetable: AI infrastructure spending, new memory investment, geopolitics, inflation and consumer confidence can all change the path.
The bottom line for household budgets
The defensible version of the headline is: global smartphone shipments could suffer their steepest annual decline on record in 2026. The shock is concentrated in low-cost phones and is being amplified by memory costs linked partly to AI infrastructure demand. Consumers are more likely to see fewer affordable choices and higher average prices than universal discounts. For a household deciding what to do, repair a supported phone where practical, compare refurbished and previous-generation options, and judge any new purchase by total ownership cost rather than the launch price alone.
