When did SmartLynx Airlines cease operations?
SmartLynx announced on 24 November 2025 that it would stop commercial operations immediately. In its public announcement, the company said: “As of today, we will be ceasing our commercial operations.” SmartLynx Airlines Ltd announcement, 24 November 2025.
LSM reported that the Latvian company stopped business activity from that date. A December 2025 LSM report said the company had filed an insolvency application and that the Estonia and Malta companies had also ceased commercial activity; it reported that the air operator certificates (AOCs) for all three operations were suspended. Why did SmartLynx shut down?
The company said it had assessed its financial condition and long-term prospects and could not continue under the circumstances. CEO Edvins Demeņus told LSM, in a statement originally given in Latvian: “Unfortunately, under the existing circumstances, it has been concluded that the company’s operations can no longer continue.” This is a translation of the Latvian original, not an English-language quotation. That is the company’s stated explanation, not a complete independent account of every cause behind the shutdown. The cited reports do not establish a definitive breakdown of the factors that led to insolvency.
What did SmartLynx do, and what does the closure mean for passengers?
SmartLynx described itself as an ACMI, cargo, and charter provider. ACMI means supplying an aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance to a customer airline. In the arrangement described by Flightradar24, the customer airline retains commercial responsibilities such as fuel, airport fees, and ticket sales. Flightradar24’s ACMI explainer.

That distinction matters to passengers: a SmartLynx-operated aircraft might fly under another airline’s brand, and a customer airline could have marketed the journey. SmartLynx’s cessation does not, on its own, show that every flight formerly operated with its capacity was cancelled. The reports cited here do not identify the status of each affected customer-airline route; passengers should rely on the airline that sold their ticket for flight-specific updates.
How many employees lost their jobs?
Eurofound’s European Restructuring Monitor recorded 382 planned job losses in Latvia and said around 380 people were employed there when operations shut down. How large was SmartLynx’s operation?
LSM reported the following company figures for 2024. They show the scale of activity before the shutdown, not a measure of what the company operated in 2025.

What remains unresolved?
The cited reporting does not establish the final amount creditors recovered, the eventual findings of insolvency proceedings, or the final outcome of individual employee wage claims. LSM reported that creditor recovery would be assessed through those proceedings, without stating a final amount. Those financial and employment outcomes should therefore be treated as unresolved.
