Small Business Website Design: Best Practices, Tips & Tools

A practical guide to planning, designing, choosing a platform for, launching, and maintaining a small-business website that customers can use and trust.

A small-business website should help the right customer understand what you offer, trust your business, and take the next step—whether that is calling, booking, requesting a quote, visiting, or buying. Start with that customer journey, then choose the pages, design, and platform that support it. A polished site cannot guarantee leads or rankings, but a clear, fast, accessible, and well-maintained one makes it easier for customers to act.

Start with the job the website must do

Before choosing colors, templates, or software, identify the website’s primary business outcome. A contractor may need quote requests; a salon may need bookings; a shop may need completed purchases; a consultant may want qualified calls. Most other decisions follow from that first choice.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Write a short requirements brief

  • Business model: service, retail, ecommerce, booking, membership, portfolio, nonprofit, or a mix.
  • Target customer: who the site serves and what problem they are trying to solve.
  • Primary conversion: call, form submission, appointment, purchase, visit, or email.
  • Scope: core services or product categories, service area, and expected growth.
  • Operations: who updates the site, receives leads, handles bookings or orders, and responds to inquiries.
  • Requirements: integrations, accessibility needs, content ownership, portability, budget, and ongoing maintenance.

Map the most important customer journey before building. For example: search result → service page → proof of experience → quote form → confirmation and follow-up. A website is part of the business workflow: someone must receive and act on each inquiry, keep availability or inventory accurate, and update holiday hours.

Plan the structure before the visual design

  1. Create a sitemap showing the pages customers need.
  2. Sketch the main user flows, especially the path to a call, booking, or purchase.
  3. Outline page content, proof points, and calls to action.
  4. Make simple wireframes for mobile and desktop.
  5. Set the visual direction and design system.
  6. Build, test, and launch only after the key customer journey works end to end.

Build a useful page structure

Not every business needs a large site. Add a page when it helps a customer understand, compare, or act—not simply to increase the page count.

Homepage

Orient visitors, establish credibility, and send them to the right next step. Show the business name, a specific value proposition, the main call to action, priority services or products, service area or location, trust evidence, contact details, and hours when relevant.

About page

Explain who owns or operates the business, relevant experience and credentials, and what customers can expect. Connect background to customer value instead of making the page an unrelated autobiography. Photos of the real team or workspace can help visitors recognize the people behind the business.

Service or product pages

Give an important service or product category its own page when customers evaluate or search for it separately. Explain the problem it addresses, who it is for, what is included, the process and expected timeline, pricing or how estimates work, relevant qualifications, and the next step. A page should offer useful detail rather than repeat a template with only a city name changed.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Contact page

Provide a phone number, email or form, hours, and a physical address or directions where applicable. State the service area and, if possible, when a customer can expect a response. Keep an alternative contact method visible in case a form fails.

Proof, FAQs, and policies

  • Reviews, case studies, or portfolio: Show specific work, the customer’s problem, what the business did, and the result. Use client names, locations, and photos only when you have permission.
  • FAQs: Answer real questions about price, availability, payment, service area, cancellations, warranties, preparation, licensing, or emergency service.
  • Privacy, terms, and other policies: Include information appropriate to the site’s data collection, payments, and sales. Legal requirements depend on jurisdiction and business practices; a generic template does not guarantee compliance.

Make the homepage immediately clear

Within a quick scan, a visitor should be able to answer five questions: What do you offer? Who is it for? Where do you serve customers? Why should they trust you? What should they do next?

  • Long-Range: Reliable, long-range Bluetooth wireless mouse works up to 10m/33 feet away from your computer (3)

Use a specific headline and one primary action

Name the service and, where location matters, the area. For example, “Same-day appliance repair in Austin for refrigerators, ovens, and washing machines” gives a clearer picture than “Quality You Can Trust.” Follow with a short benefit or differentiator that you can substantiate, then use an action label such as “Request a quote,” “Book an appointment,” “Get directions,” or “Shop the collection.”

Put useful proof near the decision

Show relevant reviews, credentials, years in business, completed work, or other evidence the business can verify. Add a concise overview of the main offerings, explain what happens after a customer contacts you, and make the service area or delivery options easy to find. A secondary action can lead to pricing, a portfolio, FAQs, or contact details.

Use visual design to make the next step easier

Establish a clear hierarchy

Give the headline, primary action, key benefits, and proof the strongest visual emphasis. Use headings and short sections so visitors can scan rather than decode a long block of text.

Keep the design system restrained

Choose one or two typefaces, a consistent heading scale, a small set of colors, and repeatable button, spacing, image, and card styles. Too many fonts, shadows, badges, and competing button treatments can make a site harder to follow.

Use authentic images

Prioritize real staff, premises, products in use, completed projects, and local context. Stock images can fill gaps, but should not suggest that a pictured person, place, or project belongs to the business when it does not. Resize and compress images before uploading; provide meaningful alt text for informative images rather than inserting keywords.

Design for phones, not just a smaller desktop

Check that navigation, buttons, forms, phone links, image crops, and tap targets work on a small screen. Pay particular attention to sticky headers, pop-ups, cookie banners, embedded maps, and comparison tables. Avoid overlays that block the content or make it difficult to reach the main action.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write customer-centered copy

Describe what the business does in plain language. Lead with the customer’s problem, name the service, and explain what happens next. Replace general promises such as “solutions for all your needs” with concrete details about the service, customer, and area. Explain real differences rather than relying on unsupported claims such as “the best.”

  • Use location terms naturally when customers choose a provider by location.
  • Put important details in readable text, not only in images or video.
  • Break long pages into useful sections with descriptive headings and links.
  • Explain what happens after a form is submitted and when the customer should expect a response.
  • Show prices or a realistic pricing guide when that information helps customers decide whether to contact you.

Google advises creating helpful, reliable, people-first content and using words customers would use to find it in prominent places such as titles, headings, alt text, and link text. See Google’s guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content. Avoid keyword stuffing, hidden text, and mechanically duplicated location pages.

Choose a platform by business need

Most mainstream platforms can support basic website SEO. Compare specific capabilities—content and metadata control, URLs and redirects, performance, accessibility, integrations, export options, and the owner’s ability to maintain the site—rather than relying on a vague “SEO-friendly” label.

Option Often a good fit for Trade-offs to consider
Wix An owner-managed service or local-business site that benefits from visual editing and built-in business features. Design freedom can lead to inconsistent layouts; moving from a proprietary builder may mean rebuilding. Pricing varies by region, promotion, and billing term. Check the current Wix plans for the offer and renewal terms that apply to you.
Squarespace A design-conscious service business, portfolio, restaurant, or small brand seeking managed hosting and a polished starting point. Less flexible for unusual requirements; some products or features may be separate subscriptions. Squarespace says sites begin with a free trial and annual plans offer savings; plan names and inclusions can change. Check Squarespace pricing and its plan-selection guidance.
WordPress.com A content-heavy business that wants managed hosting and publishing flexibility, with plugins available on paid plans. Requires more configuration than a simple builder; plugin quality and compatibility vary, and added tools can raise costs. WordPress.com is not the same product as self-hosted WordPress. Check the current WordPress.com plans.
Self-hosted WordPress A business that needs substantial control, custom content structures, specialized integrations, or portability—and has technical support or a maintenance budget. The software is open source, but hosting, domain, themes, plugins, security, backups, and maintenance all have costs. The owner or developer is responsible for updates and compatibility. See WordPress.org downloads.
Shopify A product business where catalog, inventory, checkout, payments, and shipping are central. More than a simple service website usually needs; apps and payment, transaction, shipping, or tax costs must be considered together. Check current details at Shopify pricing.
Webflow A design-led marketing site managed by a designer or team that wants fine visual control. Has a steeper learning curve than beginner builders. Site plans and workspace plans are separate concepts, so confirm the current plan and billing terms at Webflow pricing.
Carrd A genuinely one-page site, focused campaign landing page, or simple web presence. Limited for businesses needing multiple service pages, a blog, complex booking, or a larger content library. Check current options at Carrd.

Choose the simplest managed builder that covers standard forms, scheduling, and updates if the owner wants to handle a mostly informational site. Consider WordPress when publishing, specialized plugins, or customization are central and maintenance is covered. Choose Shopify for a store-first operation, Webflow when a designer will manage a custom marketing site, and Carrd only when one page genuinely meets the need.

DIY or hire a professional?

A DIY build can suit an owner who has time to write and maintain the site, needs standard features, and values direct control. A professional may be worthwhile when leads or bookings are central to revenue, a redesign could disrupt existing search traffic, custom integrations are required, or the business lacks time or expertise for accessibility, security, and ongoing maintenance. Compare the full ongoing cost, not just the setup price: subscriptions, domain and email, apps or plugins, hosting, transactions, support, and migration all matter.

Logitech M510 Full Size Ambidextrous 2.4 GHz Wireless Mouse
  • Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
  • You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
  • Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
  • The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.

Protect ownership and keep the site dependable

Keep control of core accounts

The business should control its domain registrar account, billing, and essential site access, even if a designer helps manage them. Agree on who owns the original copy, photos, design files, and analytics account; whether content can be exported; how backups are restored; and what happens if the working relationship ends. Give providers their own access rather than making the business dependent on an account they alone control.

Use secure hosting and reliable forms

Choose hosting with HTTPS, backups, software updates, and support suited to the owner’s skills. Consider spam and malware protection, uptime and form-delivery monitoring, and a way to restore a backup. The FTC’s small-business cybersecurity guidance recommends assessing security practices when launching or upgrading a website.

Forms should work on mobile, ask only for information needed at that stage, label fields clearly, show useful errors, and confirm successful submission. Protect them from spam, send notifications reliably, and store or forward submissions securely. Test that messages reach the right inbox and that someone is responsible for follow-up.

Meet practical accessibility standards

Use WCAG 2.2, the current W3C Recommendation, as a technical reference. Legal duties depend on jurisdiction, business type, size, and applicable rules; following a checklist alone does not establish legal compliance.

  • Use semantic headings in a logical order and descriptive link labels.
  • Provide useful text alternatives for meaningful images and mark decorative images appropriately.
  • Check contrast for text and controls; do not use color as the only way to convey meaning.
  • Make every function available with a keyboard and keep focus visible.
  • Give form controls programmatic labels and associate error messages with their fields.
  • Caption important video and provide transcripts for important audio.
  • Check zoom and reflow, and make menus, dialogs, and carousels usable with assistive technology.
  • Avoid flashing content and unnecessary automatic motion, audio, or content changes.

An accessibility overlay cannot substitute for accessible structure and interactions. Automated scanners can find some issues, but not judge every page, workflow, or content choice. WordPress.com’s accessibility guidance also covers practical steps such as alt text, descriptive links, headings, readable colors, and transcripts.

Improve speed without chasing a score

Google’s current “good” Core Web Vitals thresholds are LCP at 2.5 seconds or less, INP below 200 milliseconds, and CLS below 0.1. Treat them as practical performance targets, not promises of better rankings. Google says good Core Web Vitals do not guarantee top search placement; page experience is broader than any one signal. Read its guidance on Core Web Vitals and page experience.

  • Resize and compress images before uploading; serve responsive sizes where possible.
  • Avoid autoplay video backgrounds and remove scripts, plugins, and widgets the site does not need.
  • Limit font weights and use click-to-load alternatives for heavy embeds.
  • Reserve space for images, embeds, and banners so content does not jump as the page loads.
  • Use caching and a content delivery network where appropriate.
  • Test important pages on mobile, not only the homepage, and review real-user data where available.

PageSpeed Insights can help diagnose pages. Google Search Console’s Core Web Vitals report guidance recommends prioritizing pages marked “Poor” and validating changes. It gives a page-and-resource size below 500 KB as a best-practice target, not a universal pass/fail threshold.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make search and local information useful

On-site search readiness begins with crawlable, useful pages, not decorative graphics alone. Google’s technical eligibility requirements include allowing Googlebot to crawl the page, returning a successful HTTP status, and providing indexable content. Those conditions do not guarantee crawling, indexing, or rankings. See Google’s technical requirements.

For a local business, keep name, address, phone, hours, and service-area details accurate and consistent. Put contact details in crawlable text; create distinct service pages only when each provides useful information; link related pages; and use structured data only when it accurately represents visible content. Set up Google Search Console and keep a sitemap current if the platform provides one. Google Business Profile is a separate local-presence tool, not a substitute for a well-designed website; see Google Business Profile.

Measure business outcomes, then improve

Track outcomes that relate to the business rather than page views alone: phone-link clicks, form submissions, bookings, quote requests, purchases, direction requests, and qualified leads. Where useful, compare conversion rates by landing page and device, calls that become appointments or sales, revenue by channel, and form abandonment. Analytics and consent settings should match the business’s privacy obligations and practices.

Useful supporting tools include Squoosh for image optimization, Figma for design workflows, and Calendly for appointment scheduling. Choose a tool only when it solves a real workflow need; every additional integration can add cost, complexity, or data-handling responsibilities.

Use a launch checklist

  • Confirm the domain, hosting, billing, admin access, content rights, and backup responsibilities.
  • Test calls, email links, forms, booking, and purchase flows on desktop and mobile; verify confirmation messages and inbox delivery.
  • Check keyboard navigation, focus visibility, form labels, contrast, captions, zoom, and screen-reader basics.
  • Review mobile loading and layout, broken links, page titles, headings, and social-sharing previews.
  • Check important pages are public, not accidentally marked noindex, and not blocked by robots directives; verify the sitemap and redirects.
  • For a redesign, back up the old site and map changed URLs to relevant new pages with permanent redirects.
  • Confirm HTTPS, spam controls, analytics events, and a useful 404 page.
  • Test the live site immediately after launch and monitor Search Console, errors, traffic, and lead delivery.

For a site migration, preserve valuable pages and URLs where possible. A redesign that removes important content or changes URLs without redirects can disrupt search traffic. If a launch causes problems, restore the old site when needed, map old URLs, reinstate useful content, correct redirects, and monitor crawl errors and traffic.

Maintain the site after launch

Assign a recurring owner and schedule for software and plugin updates, backups, security checks, form tests, broken-link checks, and performance reviews. Update services, prices, photos, reviews, hours, and holiday information when they change. Review analytics and qualified leads periodically, then improve the pages or forms where customers are dropping off. A site that no one maintains can become inaccurate or stop handling inquiries even if its original design was strong.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
