What is the Slate Truck?
Slate Auto’s Blank Slate is a planned, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup with two seats, a single 135 kW rear-mounted motor and an interior the company describes as deliberately simple. Its “retro” appeal is best understood as a design choice—tactile controls and an emphasis on customization—not as evidence of a measured consumer preference. Slate promotes using a phone or tablet as the primary controller rather than supplying a conventional central touchscreen or standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Slate’s FAQ describes the phone-or-tablet approach; TechCrunch’s coverage of the 2025 reveal reported the company’s case for prioritizing affordability over technology-heavy features.
What is the Slate Truck price?
Slate lists the Blank Slate at $24,950, plus a $1,450 destination charge. The starting figure does not include optional equipment or certain taxes and fees, so it is not the full out-the-door cost. Slate sells directly online rather than through traditional dealerships; check its live checkout terms for the current total. Slate’s FAQ distinguishes a $50 refundable reservation from a $300 preorder deposit, or $250 for an active reservation holder; the preorder deposit counts toward purchase. Confirm the terms before paying, as deposits and prices can change.
Build a realistic budget around the configuration you would actually use: destination, taxes and fees, any pickup-to-SUV conversion kit, and chosen wraps or accessories. Slate’s June 2026 announcement said its Marketplace would offer more than 200 accessories, with more than 80% priced under $500, and that full vehicle wraps would cost under $500. Those are Slate’s stated figures, not a guarantee that every accessory or configuration will remain available at those prices. Slate’s website describes its customization offering.

When will the Slate Truck be available?
Slate’s June 2026 announcement says first deliveries are expected in Q4 2026; its FAQ describes them as slated for late 2026. The truck remains in preproduction, and the company’s price, timing and specifications may change. A reservation is not a delivery date or a completed purchase. How far can the Slate Truck go, and what can it carry?
Slate lists a projected range of 205 miles. That figure is not an official EPA estimate, and actual range will depend on conditions and vehicle specifications. Treat it as a planning estimate rather than a verified real-world result; compare it with your daily distance, access to charging and longer-trip needs. Slate says the rear-wheel-drive truck has a single 135 kW motor.

In its June 2026 announcement, Slate gave maximum towing capacity as 2,000 lb and payload capacity as 1,550 lb. These are company-published specifications. Before relying on them for work or recreation, compare the final vehicle’s ratings with your trailer, cargo and passenger needs. Slate’s FAQ gives the projected range and motor specification; its announcement lists towing and payload.
Can the Slate Truck turn into an SUV?
Yes. Slate offers Squareback, Fastback and Open Air options intended to create five-seat SUV configurations from the two-seat pickup. The company says a buyer can have a vehicle delivered already converted or change its body configuration later. Conversion costs and the exact equipment included depend on the chosen option, so include the applicable kit in your budget rather than assuming the base price buys a five-seat vehicle. Can you install Slate accessories yourself?
Slate says owners can install a wrap using a pre-cut kit, tools and Slate U video instructions, or order it pre-installed or take the kit to a professional. The company cautions that its wraps use materials designed for its vehicles; wraps intended for painted surfaces may not be compatible. Do not assume a generic wrap or tool kit is approved for the Slate. Its wider customization menu includes wraps, decals, wheels, lighting and other accessories, but availability and prices can change. Slate’s FAQ describes the wrap options and compatibility caution.

Axios reported on June 24, 2026, that Slate said it had more than 180,000 reservations. That is a company-reported reservation count, not a number of completed purchases, and it does not show how many reservation holders will buy. No age-specific reservation or purchase-intent data is established in the available reporting, so the figure cannot show whether Gen Z is especially interested. Axios’s report raised the conversion question without establishing a Gen Z breakdown.

Slate is backed by Jeff Bezos’ family office, according to TechCrunch, which also reported that former Amazon executive Diego Piacentini participated in the company’s Series A. That supports describing the startup as Bezos-backed; it does not establish that Bezos runs the company or predicts who will buy its truck. TechCrunch’s launch coverage reported the backing.

How to decide whether the Slate fits your budget and needs
- Price the configuration, not just the base vehicle. Add destination, applicable taxes and fees, conversion equipment and accessories before comparing it with alternatives.
- Match projected range to your routine. Consider charging access and longer journeys rather than treating the projected 205 miles as a guaranteed real-world distance.
- Check the utility you need. Decide whether two seats and the company-stated towing and payload ratings suit your normal passengers, cargo and trailer.
- Weigh simplicity against convenience. Tactile controls and phone-based operation may suit buyers who want a pared-back cabin; people who rely on built-in infotainment may prefer another vehicle.
- Verify ownership support locally. Slate says its battery and powertrain warranty is 10 years or 110,000 miles and that its network includes more than 3,000 RepairPal shops, including more than 100 service centers able to handle high-voltage EV service. These are company statements; review the warranty terms and confirm nearby service availability before purchase. Slate’s June 2026 announcement describes the warranty and network.
