No: the Slate Truck’s current announced price is not under $20,000. Slate’s April 2025 launch materials described an expected price below $20,000 after federal incentives, not a sticker price. In June 2026, Slate announced a $24,950 pickup price and SUV versions starting at $29,950. The newer figures are announced prices for a preproduction vehicle, not proof of completed deliveries.
How the Slate Truck price changed
Slate’s April 24, 2025 announcement framed the truck as expected to cost less than $20,000 after federal incentives. That was an incentive-dependent estimate, and the launch materials said taxes and fees were excluded. The company also warned that the vehicle was preproduction and that pricing and specifications could change. Slate’s original announcement is the source for that launch-era claim.
In July 2025, TechCrunch reported that Slate had stopped promoting the under-$20,000 price after the federal EV tax credit was set to end. The report cited the $7,500 federal credit in explaining how the launch-era claim had been presented. TechCrunch’s July 3, 2025 report covers that change.
Slate’s June 24, 2026 announcement set a $24,950 price for the pickup and starting prices of $29,950 for its Squareback and Fastback SUV versions. These are company-announced prices; they do not include all fees, taxes, or optional equipment. Slate’s June 2026 release gives the current announced pricing.

What Slate says the truck will cost to buy
The $24,950 figure is the announced pickup list price, not a guaranteed out-the-door total. Slate says list prices exclude taxes, title, license, registration, governmental fees, destination and documentation fees, and optional equipment. State or local incentives may apply to some buyers, but no buyer should assume eligibility or count on incentives to bring the vehicle below $20,000.
Slate announced a $300 preorder deposit. Existing holders of a $50 reservation were to pay $250 to preorder. A deposit is not the vehicle’s total purchase price, and the announcement does not establish that deliveries have begun.

Current announced range, charging and capability
Slate’s June 2026 specification sheet lists a 65-kWh LFP battery, single-motor rear-wheel drive, 135 kW, an 11-kW onboard charger, and a NACS charging port. The manufacturer estimates 205 miles of pickup range. That projection is based on an approximation of the EPA test cycle, not an official EPA range estimate; Slate says real-world range varies with temperature, driving habits, accessories, charging, and battery condition. The same preproduction sheet estimates Level 3 charging from 20% to 80% in 30 minutes. These are manufacturer figures and may change. See Slate’s June 2026 specification sheet.
The sheet lists towing capacity of 2,000 pounds and payload of 1,550 pounds. These are also manufacturer-published specifications for a preproduction vehicle, not independent test results.

At launch in 2025, Slate had described a 52.7-kWh base battery with a 150-mile target range and an 84.3-kWh accessory battery with a 240-mile target range. Those dated launch targets have been superseded by the newer announced specification; they should not be treated as current range options.
Slate has separately announced access to Tesla Superchargers, and its June 2026 specification sheet lists NACS. The company’s Supercharger announcement describes that access.

What the base vehicle and customization pitch mean for a budget
Slate’s original concept emphasized a simple two-seat, rear-wheel-drive pickup, with a phone mount and USB power rather than a conventional built-in infotainment interface. Its June 2026 release describes pickup and SUV configurations, conversion after purchase, more than 200 Marketplace accessories, and more than 100 wrap colors. Slate says over 80% of Marketplace accessories are priced below $500. Those figures describe the company’s announced catalog, not the final cost of a customized vehicle.
For a personal-finance decision, the relevant number is the configuration you would actually buy: base vehicle plus any conversion, accessories, and fees. Axios noted that customer preferences could raise the cost. Slate says the vehicles are planned for assembly at a reindustrialized factory in Warsaw, Indiana; the preproduction announcement does not establish that customer production is underway. See Axios’s June 24, 2026 report.

When the Slate Truck is expected to be available
Slate said first deliveries were expected in Q4 2026. That is a company forecast, not confirmation of a delivery date for an individual reservation holder. The June 2026 release described the vehicles as preproduction, so buyers should distinguish the announced schedule from completed production or delivery.
How to judge whether the price is genuinely affordable
The headline price alone is not enough to establish whether Slate is a good-value vehicle for a particular buyer. Before comparing it with another EV or pickup, account for the same set of costs and capabilities:
- Out-the-door cost: add taxes, registration, destination and documentation charges, and the options you need; apply only incentives for which you are actually eligible.
- Included equipment: compare the base vehicle with the equipment you would otherwise have to buy, including any desired SUV conversion or accessories.
- Usable range and charging: compare range estimates on equivalent test bases and consider charging access and charging time for your routes.
- Work capacity: compare the stated payload and towing figures with your real loads and trailer needs.
- Ownership support: check warranty details, service access, and delivery certainty before treating an announced price as a complete ownership proposition.
The available Slate announcements establish manufacturer estimates and announced prices, but not independent road-test results or a verified market-wide ranking as the least expensive vehicle in America.
