Slate Auto is targeting the U.S. entry-level EV market with a configurable, two-seat electric pickup called the Slate Truck. The Blank Slate pickup starts at $24,950 before a $1,450 destination charge and other fees; SUV configurations start at $29,950. First deliveries are targeted for Q4 2026, but the vehicle remains in preproduction, so its specifications and availability may change.
What Slate Auto is building
Slate emerged from stealth in April 2025 after developing its vehicle for several years. Jeff Bezos is among its backers, according to TechCrunch’s coverage of the announcement. The company’s first vehicle is a small, rear-wheel-drive electric pickup with two seats. Slate’s approach is to keep the base vehicle relatively simple and let owners add equipment through an accessories marketplace or convert the truck into an SUV-style configuration.
That strategy is intended to make the initial purchase less expensive than a more fully equipped vehicle, while allowing buyers to add features over time. It also means the advertised starting price is not the whole cost of ownership: buyers should account for destination and other fees, and decide which accessories or configuration changes they would actually want.
Slate Truck price and preorder terms
Slate lists the Blank Slate pickup at $24,950 before destination, taxes and other fees. Its current FAQ lists a $1,450 destination charge. Squareback and Fastback SUV configurations start at $29,950, according to Slate’s June 24, 2026 announcement. These are manufacturer-listed starting prices, not final out-the-door quotes.

A deposit secures a place in Slate’s process; it is not a completed vehicle purchase, proof of delivery, or independent validation of the truck.
How the pickup becomes an SUV
The pickup is designed around customization rather than a long list of built-in features. Slate offers paths to Squareback and Fastback SUV configurations, and says its Marketplace includes more than 200 accessories, with over 80% priced under $500. Available accessory categories include items such as roof racks, wraps and audio options. The accessory count and price share are Slate’s figures, not an independent audit.
The cabin omits built-in infotainment. Slate says a phone mount and charging are included; drivers can use their own phone and portable Bluetooth speaker or choose accessory audio. Slate also says the truck can charge from a standard 120-volt wall outlet, a 240-volt dryer outlet, or Tesla Superchargers. The company’s homepage describes its customization approach and charging options.

Range, capability and what is not yet confirmed
Slate’s June 2026 release gives a manufacturer-estimated range of 205 miles, towing capacity of 2,000 pounds and payload capacity of 1,550 pounds. Its FAQ lists the truck at 174.6 inches long, 68 inches tall and 70.6 inches wide, with a 108.9-inch wheelbase, and describes a rear-mounted 135 kW motor. These are company-provided figures for a preproduction vehicle, not independent test results.

The preorder page says the vehicle is preproduction and that specifications and availability may change. Slate says the truck is designed to achieve a five-star US NCAP crash rating; that is a design goal, not a rating already earned. Its preorder page sets out the preproduction and estimate caveats.
Slate also states a 10-year/110,000-mile battery and powertrain warranty and says customers will have access to more than 3,000 RepairPal shops, including over 100 service centers able to handle high-voltage EV work. Those are manufacturer claims; the available information does not establish independent repair outcomes or the warranty’s exclusions.

When deliveries are expected
Slate targets first deliveries for Q4 2026. That is a future target, not a completed launch or a guaranteed delivery date. Buyers considering a deposit should distinguish Slate’s delivery goal from a confirmed production schedule, particularly because the company describes the vehicle as preproduction and says availability can change.
What the reservation figure does—and does not—tell buyers
Slate reported more than 180,000 reservation holders on June 24, 2026. That figure reflects reservations claimed by the company, not completed orders, sales, or vehicles delivered. How many reservation holders will convert to purchases is not established.
Slate CEO Peter Faricy said in the company’s June 24 release: “More than 180,000 reservation holders have told us they’re ready for a vehicle that’s affordable, reliable, and built around their lives,” (Slate Auto). The reservation count indicates interest, but it does not demonstrate that the vehicle can be produced at scale, meet its estimates, or attract buyers at the final price.

How Slate compares with lower-priced EV alternatives
TechCrunch’s June 24, 2026 coverage cited the Chevrolet Bolt at around $29,000 and the Nissan Leaf around $32,000, and reported Ford was teasing a $30,000 electric truck for 2027. These are point-in-time reported figures, not a current survey of transaction prices; the article does not establish that the comparison prices include equivalent fees, equipment or incentives. See TechCrunch’s June 24 comparison.
For a household weighing Slate against another EV, compare the same items rather than relying on starting prices alone:
- Full purchase cost: Include destination, taxes, fees, accessories and any applicable incentives.
- Vehicle format and capacity: The Slate pickup is a two-seat vehicle; compare that with the passenger and cargo needs the alternative must meet.
- Range and equipment: Compare official, like-for-like range information and what is included from the factory.
- Utility: Check towing and payload needs against the vehicle’s stated limits, while accounting for whether the figures are manufacturer estimates or independently verified.
- Availability: Slate’s current target is Q4 2026 delivery; a competing model’s quoted price or announcement does not by itself establish delivery timing.
The announced base price makes Slate’s premise easy to understand, but whether it is the better financial choice depends on final pricing, the equipment a buyer needs, verified performance and actual availability.

The main risk is execution
Slate’s plan depends on turning an inexpensive base vehicle and a modular accessories strategy into a product customers can actually buy and use. TechCrunch’s April 12, 2026 explainer described the broader difficulties EV startups have faced, including bankruptcies, failed launches and pivots, while noting Slate was still pursuing production for late 2026.
For buyers, the practical question is not yet whether Slate has disrupted the EV market. That conclusion would require customer deliveries, independent assessment of the vehicle and evidence of repeatable production. Until then, treat its prices, specifications and delivery schedule as announced plans and manufacturer claims, and make any deposit decision with the uncertainty in mind.
