Stripe is usually the better choice for a business that needs to accept payments, manage subscriptions, or run a marketplace. Skrill is primarily a digital wallet and money-transfer service; its merchant checkout is most relevant when customers specifically want to pay from Skrill and the business can obtain a merchant account. For U.S. businesses, there is an important practical constraint: Skrill’s U.S. support page says it is not accepting new U.S. merchants for Skrill business accounts. That does not mean Skrill personal services are unavailable to U.S. users. Skrill’s U.S. business-account information
Skrill vs Stripe at a glance
| Question | Stripe | Skrill |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Merchant payment infrastructure and related financial tools. | A digital wallet and money-transfer service, with separate merchant acceptance in eligible markets. |
| Best fit | Businesses taking online or in-person payments, SaaS companies, developers, and marketplaces. | Businesses whose customers want to pay with Skrill balances, plus consumers sending or receiving wallet funds. |
| U.S. merchant onboarding | Availability depends on the business country and product; see Stripe’s country availability details. | Skrill’s current U.S. business-account page says it is not accepting new U.S. merchants. |
| Checkout and payment methods | Cards and supported local payment methods, with availability dependent on the merchant country and integration. | Skrill wallet checkout is available through merchant integrations where supported; it is not equivalent to broad card acquiring. |
| Subscriptions | Dedicated recurring-payment and Billing tools. | Automated-payment documentation exists, but exact merchant capabilities depend on the product, market, and contract. |
| Marketplaces | Stripe Connect is designed for platforms that onboard sellers, route payments, and manage payouts. | The available sources do not establish a general-purpose marketplace orchestration service equivalent to Connect. |
| Payouts or withdrawals | Merchant funds are paid out to eligible business destinations on supported schedules. | Wallet funds can be withdrawn through supported routes; consumer withdrawal fees are not merchant acquiring prices. |
| Pricing | Country-, payment-method-, and product-dependent transaction and service fees. | Country-, currency-, route-, and account-dependent fees; merchant pricing must be checked separately from personal wallet fees. |
The shortest useful distinction is: Stripe is primarily a system for a business to take and manage payments; Skrill is primarily a wallet customers use to hold, send, and spend money.
What is the difference between Skrill and Stripe?
Stripe is built around the merchant’s payment operation
A business can use Stripe to present checkout, collect card or supported local payments, confirm transactions, issue refunds, handle disputes, and reconcile activity. Its products include hosted Checkout, Payment Links, APIs, recurring billing, fraud tools, and Connect for platforms. Payment-method availability varies by integration and merchant country. Stripe’s supported payment methods
Skrill is built around a customer wallet
A Skrill user can hold funds in a wallet, pay participating merchants, transfer money to other Skrill users, and withdraw funds through supported methods. Businesses need merchant onboarding to accept Skrill as a checkout option; an ordinary personal Skrill account does not automatically let its owner accept customer payments. Skrill says business applicants need company and website information and verification documentation. Skrill’s account guidance

The services overlap at checkout, but they are not interchangeable. A Skrill wallet payment is one possible way for a customer to pay a merchant; Stripe is a broader merchant-processing and payment-management platform.
Pricing: compare the whole payment path
Stripe’s displayed U.S. standard fees
Stripe’s pricing page lists U.S. standard domestic card processing at 2.9% + $0.30 per successful transaction. The same U.S.-oriented page lists an additional 1% for cross-border transactions and 1% when currency conversion is required; a $15 received-dispute fee; a $15 manual dispute-countered fee, returned if the dispute is won; U.S. Instant Payouts at 1.5% with a $0.50 minimum; and ACH Direct Debit at 0.8%, capped at $5. These are displayed U.S. pricing examples, not universal rates: country, payment method, product, Connect configuration, and custom pricing can change the total. Stripe pricing
Skrill’s U.S. personal-wallet fees are not merchant rates
Skrill’s U.S. fee page lists 0% for displayed local payment-method deposits and global card deposits, subject to possible third-party fees; instant bank-transfer withdrawal at 1.5% with a $0.50 minimum; and bank-transfer withdrawal at $5.50. It also describes Skrill-to-Skrill transfers and an inactivity service fee. These figures describe personal-wallet routes on the U.S. consumer fee page, not what a merchant would pay to accept Skrill. Ask Skrill for the commercial quote and settlement terms applicable to the business account. Skrill U.S. fees
Currency conversion and cross-border costs
Skrill says it uses its own exchange rate and adds a foreign-exchange fee when converting currencies. Stripe’s displayed pricing also identifies a conversion surcharge in relevant cases. The actual cost depends on the customer’s payment currency, merchant and settlement currencies, payment route, and account terms; check whether conversion occurs at payment, settlement, or withdrawal. How to make a fair cost comparison
For a specific transaction, compare the customer’s payment method, processing fee, cross-border charge, FX conversion, refund treatment, dispute cost, merchant settlement fee, and any subsequent withdrawal cost. A zero-fee wallet deposit does not establish that Skrill merchant checkout is cheaper, and Stripe’s domestic card rate does not represent every Stripe payment method or market. There is no defensible global winner on price without the merchant’s country, account type, route, currencies, and Skrill commercial quote.
Payment methods and checkout
Stripe supports cards, bank debits and transfers, bank redirects, wallets, and other local methods where supported. Stripe Checkout provides hosted or embedded checkout for one-time and subscription payments, with more than 40 local payment methods available through its prebuilt interface; the actual options depend on the business’s market and configuration. Stripe Checkout
Skrill’s Quick Checkout documentation describes the Skrill Digital Wallet as one merchant payment method, with supported countries and options dependent on integration and configuration. A customer typically needs to select Skrill and pay through the wallet flow; that does not mean the merchant has gained general card acceptance through Skrill. Skrill Quick Checkout integration guide
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Choose Stripe when you need a merchant checkout that can combine cards with supported local methods.
- Consider Skrill when a meaningful share of customers already uses Skrill and your business has confirmed merchant eligibility and pricing.
- Do not assume that either service offers every method in every country; verify the exact business location, customer market, and integration.
Subscriptions and recurring billing
Stripe documents recurring-payment workflows through Billing, Checkout, and related tools, including subscriptions, saved payment methods, trials, discounts, customer portals, and recovery workflows for failed payments. That makes it the stronger default for SaaS, memberships, subscription ecommerce, and recurring donations. Stripe recurring payments
Skrill publishes automated-payment integration documentation, but the existence of a wallet or automated-payment interface does not by itself establish that a merchant has Stripe-like subscription administration. Confirm the exact merchant product and contract, including tokenized payment support, retry behavior, cancellation flows, and supported countries, before designing around recurring charges. Marketplaces and seller payouts
Stripe Connect is specifically designed for platforms and marketplaces. It supports connected-account onboarding and verification, payment routing, application fees, seller payouts, and platform administration. The platform must still choose an appropriate charge and liability model. In some configurations, the platform balance can be debited for refunds, disputes, and related fees, and recovering money from a connected seller is a separate matter. Stripe Connect and Stripe marketplace refunds and disputes
A wallet payment option is not the same as a system for splitting customer payments among sellers and controlling payouts. The available Skrill materials do not establish a general-purpose equivalent to Stripe Connect, so do not select Skrill as a Connect substitute without confirming that its specific commercial arrangement supports the platform’s money flows and responsibilities.
Payouts, refunds, disputes, and account risk
Understand what “payout” means
A Stripe payout moves processed merchant funds to an eligible business bank account or other supported destination. Schedule and timing can depend on the country, settlement currency, bank location, business type, payment method, and account status. Stripe supports payout schedules and eligible Instant Payouts; new users may not qualify immediately, and the U.S. pricing page lists a fee for that option. Stripe payout information and Instant Payout eligibility
A Skrill withdrawal moves wallet funds out of a Skrill account. The consumer fee page’s withdrawal routes and fees do not establish merchant settlement timing or commercial payout terms. Confirm merchant payout destination, schedule, currency, and fees directly for the business account.
Refund and dispute exposure
Stripe provides dispute workflows and evidence submission, but those tools do not remove the merchant’s liability or guarantee a dispute will be won. For Connect platforms, responsibility for refunds, fees, disputed amounts, and negative balances depends on the charge setup. Stripe marketplace model

Skrill’s terms describe fees that may apply to chargebacks, returned items, and other processing problems, alongside its currency-conversion treatment. Review the merchant agreement for the actual fees and procedures rather than inferring them from a personal wallet fee list. Skrill account terms
Verification and restrictions matter with both
Payment services may review identity, business activity, transaction patterns, and compliance risks. A business should check prohibited-business rules, reserve or payout terms, appeal processes, and negative-balance responsibility before launch—especially in regulated or higher-risk sectors such as gambling, gaming, forex, adult content, or financial services. Neither provider should be assumed to approve a business or to avoid payment holds.

New U.S. ecommerce business
Stripe is the practical default for merchant processing. Skrill’s U.S. support page says it is not accepting new U.S. merchants for business accounts, although that statement should not be mistaken for a blanket claim that U.S. consumers cannot use Skrill.
SaaS, memberships, or recurring sales
Choose Stripe unless a specific Skrill merchant contract demonstrably meets your subscription needs. Stripe has documented subscription management and failed-payment workflows.
Marketplace or multi-sided platform
Start with Stripe Connect if the platform must onboard sellers, route payments, collect fees, and pay participants. Model who bears refunds and disputes before choosing a charge configuration.

International ecommerce
Neither name alone guarantees coverage in every country. Check merchant-country eligibility, customer payment methods, settlement currencies, FX costs, and payout routes. If opening an account in another country, Stripe says businesses generally need a legal entity, tax ID, physical location, phone number, government ID, working website, and bank account in that country. Stripe requirements for another country
Customers specifically ask to pay with Skrill
Consider Skrill as an additional checkout method if your business can onboard and the expected conversion benefit justifies a second provider. Before committing, obtain commercial pricing and confirm refunds, settlement, supported markets, and account restrictions.
Personal transfers rather than business payments
Skrill is the relevant product to evaluate for wallet-to-wallet transfers. Stripe is not a general-purpose consumer wallet or personal remittance service.
High-risk or regulated business
Do not choose either provider on the assumption that a sector will be accepted. Confirm current underwriting eligibility, permitted activities, reserves, payout controls, and geographic restrictions with the provider before building the payment flow.
Can you use Skrill and Stripe together?
Yes, a business could offer both if it is eligible for Skrill merchant acceptance and has a clear reason, such as serving customers who specifically prefer Skrill balances. Doing so means maintaining separate integrations and operational processes for payment confirmation, reconciliation, refunds, disputes, reporting, and payouts. Add Skrill only if the expected customer benefit is worth that support and accounting burden; Stripe does not automatically accept Skrill simply because the merchant has a Stripe account.
Security and compliance responsibilities
Stripe offers hosted checkout and payment components that can keep sensitive card details from passing through a merchant’s own servers, along with fraud and dispute tools. Using hosted payment collection can reduce the merchant’s direct exposure to card data, but it does not automatically erase PCI responsibilities. KYC, AML, sanctions, privacy, consumer-protection, and tax duties can also apply to the merchant independently of its payment provider. Stripe product and security information
Compare specific controls and contractual responsibilities rather than labeling one service categorically safer. Verify what data your implementation handles, who performs verification, what happens during a risk review, and how a merchant can respond to a payout hold or disputed transaction.
Verdict
For most businesses choosing a system to take and manage payments, Stripe is the stronger default—especially for U.S. merchants, subscriptions, developers, and marketplaces. Skrill makes sense when wallet usage is a real customer need, the business is eligible in its market, and the merchant terms work. They are different kinds of products, so make the decision around the payment job you need done, not a single global fee claim.
