Six Used Sedans to Consider: 2024 Price Estimates and Safety Criteria

Six sedans in a May 2024 safety-focused recommendation list had Kelley Blue Book estimates ranging from $8,400 to $19,200 under stated assumptions. That evidence does not establish that they were the original ten cars behind the title, or that each cost less than a defined average new-car price. The figures below are historical U.S. estimates—not current asking prices—and the model years matter.

What the 2024 figures do—and do not—show

On May 22, 2024, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports (CR) published used-vehicle recommendations with KBB average U.S. values dated April 19, 2024. The estimates assumed a vehicle in good condition with typical mileage, purchased from a private party in its lowest trim. Those assumptions are essential: an individual car’s price can differ substantially with location, mileage, condition, equipment, seller, and history.

The available evidence does not specify an average-new-car benchmark or its measure, such as transaction price or sticker price. It therefore cannot substantiate the comparison “less than the average price of a new car in 2024.” Nor does it verify a particular ten-car ranking. The six examples below are the sedan examples with dated prices that can be reported; they should not be mistaken for a reconstructed top ten.

Six sedan examples with dated KBB estimates

Model Model year(s) cited KBB average U.S. value
Toyota Corolla sedan 2017 or newer $10,600
Toyota Camry 2018 or newer $9,600
Honda Accord sedan 2020 $19,200
Mazda 6 2015–2017 $8,400
Honda Accord coupe or sedan 2015–2017 $10,500
Subaru Legacy 2017–2018 $11,600

Each figure is a KBB average U.S. value as of April 19, 2024, under the condition, mileage, seller, and trim assumptions described above. The recommendations were divided into “Best Choices” and “Good Choices,” but the available information does not identify which category applies to each row, so the table does not assign one.

How the safety-oriented recommendations were selected

These were not simply low-price picks. IIHS and CR said their used-vehicle recommendations emphasized safety and reliability. Their published criteria included CR reliability scores of 4 or 5 out of 5 for a majority of the listed model years, emergency-handling scores of at least 3 out of 5, and dry braking distances of 145 feet or less. The release also described applicable IIHS crashworthiness and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration star-rating criteria.

Those criteria can help screen model years, but they are not a guarantee about a particular used car. A model-level rating does not establish that an individual vehicle has been maintained, has no undisclosed damage, or remains in sound mechanical condition. Safety equipment and crash-test evidence can also differ by model year and trim, so confirm the equipment on the exact car being considered.

What “reliable” means in a used-car recommendation

CR’s used-car guidance describes recommendations as drawing on road-test performance when new, consistently above-average reliability across multiple survey years, and standard electronic stability control for the model year. In CR’s 2024 Buying Guide, predicted reliability is a forecast based on member survey reports; owner satisfaction is the share of surveyed members who say they would definitely buy or lease the vehicle again. These measure different things: a reliability forecast is not an inspection of the car for sale, and satisfaction is not a mechanical reliability score.

A dependable reputation is best treated as one screening factor alongside the exact model year, safety equipment, price, and evidence about the vehicle’s individual history and condition. Don’t collapse those separate questions into a single label.

How to evaluate one of these sedans before buying

  1. Compare the actual asking price with current local listings. The April 2024 estimates are a dated reference point, not a present-day valuation. Compare cars with similar model years, trims, mileage, condition, and location; account for taxes, fees, and any repairs when deciding what the car will really cost.
  2. Check the exact model year and equipment. Verify the vehicle identification number (VIN), trim, installed safety features, and applicable crash-test information. A recommendation covering a range of years does not mean every year or trim has identical equipment or ratings.
  3. Review the vehicle’s history and maintenance records. Look for title or damage issues, ownership and service records, and gaps that need explanation. A history report can provide useful information, but it cannot reveal every mechanical problem.
  4. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified mechanic assess the specific car before purchase. An OBD-II code reader can supplement checks for diagnostic codes, but it cannot certify reliability or replace a professional inspection.
  5. Make the choice fit your costs and use. Compare the individual cars’ condition, expected maintenance, fuel economy, insurance, and space needs. The cited recommendations do not provide enough comparative evidence to rank these six by ownership cost or declare one the best fit for every buyer.
