Six Eccentric Millionaires and Billionaires: Unusual Habits and Ambitions

These six profiles illustrate why wealthy people have been called eccentric, while separating reported anecdotes, ambitious plans, and disputed claims from established events.

There is no authoritative way to rank the world’s “most eccentric” millionaires and billionaires. These six illustrative profiles draw on unusual public habits, personal choices, and projects described in secondary articles published between 2013 and 2021. “Eccentric” here is a subjective label—not a diagnosis or a measurable trait.

Six profiles, not a definitive ranking

The examples differ in what made them memorable: reclusiveness, frugality, ambitious plans, or conspicuous personal choices. The accounts below distinguish reported anecdotes from completed events and disputed claims. They are not a current survey of wealthy people, and dated wealth estimates in the original articles should not be read as present-day figures.

Howard Hughes: reclusiveness and aviation

Film producer and aviation pioneer Howard Hughes became known for his reclusive later life. Secondary accounts connect changes in his habits to an aviation accident, but personal-behavior details are best treated as reported anecdotes rather than as a clinical explanation. Listverse notes that the crash is depicted in the film The Aviator (Listverse, 2013).

Ingvar Kamprad: reported frugality

IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad was described in older lists as unusually frugal. Examples cited include using public transport and keeping a modest home (Listverse, 2013; Celebrity Net Worth, 2015). Those articles offer anecdotes, not a comprehensive account of his finances or daily life.

Clive Palmer: ambitious and outsized projects

Clive Palmer attracted attention for projects on a grand scale. A 2015 Celebrity Net Worth article described animatronic dinosaurs installed at his resort and reported a plan to clone a dinosaur. It also covered his proposal to build a Titanic replica. The article’s proposed 2016 arrival date is now historical, not a current schedule; these plans should not be confused with completed outcomes (Celebrity Net Worth, 2015).

Peter Thiel: far-reaching technology interests

Older list articles characterized investor Peter Thiel’s philanthropic interests as reaching into artificial intelligence, human longevity, and floating cities (Celebrity Net Worth, 2015; Listverse, 2013). That characterization captures the ambition of the subjects, not proof that each initiative succeeded or remains active.

Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart: a late-life marriage

Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, Duchess of Alba, married Alfonso Diez in 2011 when she was 85; she died in 2014. A 2015 article said she gave inheritances early, while a 2021 article described her will as dividing wealth among her children. These are distinct accounts and do not establish a precise distribution of her estate (Celebrity Net Worth, 2015; LoveMoney, 2021).

Jocelyn Wildenstein: appearance and disputed settlement reports

Jocelyn Wildenstein’s appearance and cosmetic surgery have been a focus of tabloid and list-article coverage. The financial claims require particular care: Celebrity Net Worth says reports that her divorce settlement was $1.5 billion were mostly debunked and that she likely received significantly less. The $1.5 billion figure is therefore not established fact (Celebrity Net Worth, 2015; LoveMoney, 2021).

How to read claims about eccentric wealth

List articles can make striking anecdotes easy to remember, but they do not provide a consistent way to compare people. For these profiles, the useful distinctions are whether a detail is a reported habit, a confirmed event, a proposal, or a disputed financial claim. None supports a measurable ranking of eccentricity, and none supplies a reliable basis for comparing current net worth.
