If you want to buy or sell a car online besides Carvana, start by deciding whether you need a retailer, a marketplace to compare listings, or a direct offer for your current vehicle. CarMax offers both online and in-store shopping and buys cars separately; Cars.com and Autotrader connect shoppers with listings; and CarGurus offers a digital sale offer in participating markets. These services are not interchangeable, and none is established here as universally cheapest or highest-paying.
How to choose a Carvana alternative
Carvana is a direct online vehicle retailer and buyer. Other services may instead show cars offered by multiple dealers or sellers, or provide a purchase offer without selling you a replacement. Before comparing, identify what you need:
- Retailer: You want to shop a company’s inventory, online, in person, or both.
- Marketplace: You want to browse and compare listings from multiple sellers. The platform may not own the cars.
- Direct sale offer: You want a company to make an offer on your current car, rather than listing it for a private sale.
- Online tools with an in-person step: You can begin online but may need an appointment, document review, or vehicle inspection to complete the transaction.
Local eligibility, available inventory, delivery or pickup, and transaction steps can vary. Treat an online offer as provisional until the company has verified the vehicle and required documents.
Sites like Carvana to compare
CarMax: online and in-store shopping, plus car buying
CarMax lets customers shop online, visit a store, or combine the two. It also says it will buy a vehicle even if the owner does not buy another car from CarMax. The stated process is to get an offer, choose an appointment or available home pickup, and receive payment after verification. Pickup availability and state requirements can differ. Review CarMax’s selling process and confirm the steps available where you live.

Cars.com: marketplace for comparing listings
Cars.com describes its service as connecting vehicle buyers and sellers. It is useful for searching and comparing listings, but a car shown there is not necessarily owned or sold by Cars.com. Confirm the seller, price, paperwork, and handoff details for each listing.
Autotrader: listings from sellers and dealers
Autotrader describes itself as an online solution for buying and selling new, certified, and used cars. Use it to find and compare listings; the seller’s own terms determine how the sale, payment, delivery, and paperwork work.
CarGurus: marketplace with a location-dependent sale offer
CarGurus combines marketplace search with Instant Max Cash Offer, a digital vehicle-sale service announced for participating markets. Check whether the offer service is available for your location and vehicle before relying on it. A marketplace listing and a direct offer are different ways to sell.
DriveTime: a retailer lead to verify
DriveTime is identified as an example of a single-retailer inventory site. The available information here does not establish its current purchase or sale terms, so check its present offerings directly before treating it as a substitute for Carvana.

TrueCar: verify current services before comparing
Carvana named TrueCar as an online automotive competitor in its 2020 annual report. That historical mention does not establish TrueCar’s current buying or selling model. Check TrueCar’s current service details before deciding whether it fits your needs.
Compare the transaction, not just the website
Two sites can show cars while offering very different ways to complete a purchase. A listing platform connects you with the seller; a retailer sells its own inventory; a direct offer service evaluates your current car. Compare the relevant details for the exact vehicle and location:

- Step-by-step procedures written from a complete teardown and rebuild, giving you the confidence to tackle repairs at any skill level.
- Over 700+ clear photos and diagrams that simplify complex systems, helping you complete jobs faster and with fewer mistakes.
- Comprehensive troubleshooting and fault-finding guides to quickly diagnose problems and reduce costly downtime.
- Who is the seller or buyer? Identify the business or individual responsible for the transaction, not just the site displaying the listing.
- What can you complete online? Separate online search, financing tools, or an initial offer from the final handoff and paperwork.
- Can you sell without buying? A company’s direct purchase offer is different from a trade-in and from listing the car for a private buyer.
- What is available locally? Confirm delivery, pickup, appointments, offer eligibility, and any state-specific requirements.
- When is the offer final? Ask what inspection or document verification can change an initial offer, and how payment is made.
How to compare offers for your car
- Request offers from services that buy vehicles directly, including Carvana and CarMax, and check CarGurus if its offer service covers your market.
- Compare each offer for the same vehicle condition, mileage, equipment, and payoff details. Note any deadline or conditions attached to the offer.
- Ask what happens at inspection, what documents are required, whether you need an appointment, and whether pickup is available.
- Compare the verified amount you would receive and the effort required to complete the sale—not only the first number shown online.
For a purchase, compare the specific car’s full price and seller terms across retailer inventory and marketplace listings. The evidence available does not establish a universal cheapest place to buy or highest-paying place to sell.
