What happened to Silver Airways?
Silver Airways LLC and Seaborne Virgin Islands, Inc. filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Florida on December 30, 2024. Their cases were jointly administered. Silver served Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean; Seaborne operated inter-island service between St. Croix and St. Thomas. Chapter 11 is a reorganization process, not an automatic grounding order. Why did the Chapter 11 sale process not keep Silver flying?
The initial bankruptcy strategy was to fund operations while pursuing a sale of the airline as a going concern. In May 2025, the court approved debtor-in-possession financing and bidding procedures. Silver announced on June 11, 2025, that it would stop flying. The Associated Press reported that Silver said its assets had been sold through the Chapter 11 proceeding to a holding company that chose not to continue flight operations. The abrupt shutdown stranded some passengers. Silver’s website notice, as reported by AP, told passengers: “Please do not go to the airport.” It advised them to seek refunds through their card issuer or travel agency. When did Silver’s bankruptcy move to Chapter 7?
On July 25, 2025, the court converted the jointly administered cases from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7. The conversion means the cases proceeded as bankruptcy estates being administered by a Chapter 7 trustee, rather than as a reorganization intended to preserve the airline’s operations. The estate remained active in 2026. A public docket index listed post-conversion operating reports filed in September 2026 and later proceedings involving creditor claims and a dispute about whether certain property was included in the sale. What happens to your ticket if an airline goes bankrupt?
Bankruptcy by itself does not necessarily cancel an airline’s flights. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) says a carrier may continue operating while it reorganizes, or it may stop operations through liquidation.
