Spartans FC reported on 6 October 2026 that the Scottish FA had approved dual interests linked to the proposed acquisition of Shrewsbury Town, along with appointments involving Scott Davidson, Will Dotson and Craig Graham. Spartans said this completed the majority of the regulatory aspects. It did not announce that the sale had completed, and the latest official updates reviewed give no completion date.
What is the latest development?
The latest reported step is Scottish FA approval for the dual interests arising from the proposed Shrewsbury Town acquisition and the appointments of Davidson, Dotson and Graham as directors of both clubs. Spartans FC described this as completion of the majority of regulatory aspects, while saying further updates would follow. Spartans FC’s 6 October statement does not say the transaction has closed.
The distinction matters: approval milestones are not the same as a completed sale. Shrewsbury Town had earlier said documentation still needed to be finalised after the EFL and Independent Football Regulator (IFR) approved the consortium. No reviewed official statement confirms that outstanding documents have been signed or gives a date for completion. Shrewsbury Town’s 7 September announcement
Who is in the buying group?
- Scott Davidson leads the consortium and is Spartans FC’s lead shareholder. Shrewsbury Town identified him as the intended chair of its proposed board.
- Will Dotson and Craig Graham are consortium members and Spartans directors. Shrewsbury Town said they had passed the relevant owners’ and directors’ tests.
- Brad Friedel, a former US international and Premier League goalkeeper, is also involved in the consortium. Shrewsbury Town said his proposed director role was subject to IFR approval. Spartans’ 6 October update specifically named Davidson, Dotson and Graham; it did not confirm that Friedel’s role had cleared every approval.
Shrewsbury Town identified the participants and proposed roles in its 11 September statement, and reported the individual tests for Dotson and Graham on 18 September. Club chairman Roland Wycherley said the club remained committed to completing the transaction.

What approvals have been reported—and what remains unknown?
The statements describe several different regulatory steps, rather than one approval that itself completes the purchase.
- EFL and IFR: Shrewsbury Town said on 7 September that both had approved the American consortium.
- Owners’ and directors’ tests: The club said Dotson and Graham passed the relevant tests on 18 September. Its 11 September statement had said Friedel’s proposed director appointment was subject to IFR approval.
- Scottish FA: Spartans reported on 6 October that approval covered the dual interests and specified appointments involving Davidson, Dotson and Graham.
These are approvals as described by the clubs. The available statements establish progress through regulatory steps, but do not establish that all transaction documents are final or that the acquisition is complete.

Why has the process taken months?
In an open letter responding to supporter questions, Shrewsbury Town said the initial letter of intent was exchanged on 16 March 2026. The chairman and board cited regulatory checks, finances and legal work as reasons for the time involved. That is the club’s explanation of the process, not an independently verified account of the transaction. The club’s 20 September open letter
The letter said the consortium had wanted to remain private until formal approval. It described the process as being in its final stages but did not promise a completion date: “I cannot promise you a date, but we’re pushing for completion as quickly as we possibly can.”
