Re:

Should You Sell Camtek (CAMT)? The Bear Case and What Could Prove It Wrong

No sourced analyst sell call or price target is established. Camtek’s Q1 2026 earnings decline supports a cautious case, while 2025 growth, cash, and order momentum complicate it.

The available evidence does not identify an analyst who has recommended selling Camtek, nor does it establish a sell rating or price target. The useful question is whether the company’s latest results and disclosed risks support a bearish case. They do: first-quarter 2026 operating income and diluted earnings per share declined year over year, while revenue growth was modest. But Camtek also reported strong 2025 growth, substantial liquidity, and management expects a much stronger second half of 2026. The evidence supports a conditional sell thesis—not an attributed analyst call or a conclusion that every investor should sell.

What Camtek sells, and why its equipment matters

Camtek Ltd. (Nasdaq and TASE: CAMT) makes automated inspection and metrology equipment for semiconductor production. Its systems use optics, image processing, and algorithms to scan wafers and detect or measure defects and features. The company serves integrated device manufacturers (IDMs), outsourced semiconductor assembly and test providers (OSATs), and foundries. Its current platform families include Eagle, Hawk, and MicroProf, according to Camtek’s FY2025 Form 20-F filed March 19, 2026.

Inspection can become more valuable as chip packaging grows more complex. Advanced packaging, chiplets, high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and hybrid bonding combine costly components and manufacturing steps; detecting a defective die before it is incorporated into an assembly can help avoid wasting further production effort. That is a plausible demand driver, not proof that Camtek will win a particular share of future spending. The company also identifies markets including CMOS image sensors, compound semiconductors, power, RF, and MEMS.

What the latest results say about momentum

Camtek’s FY2025 results showed solid annual growth, but Q1 2026 was slower on revenue and weaker on two key GAAP earnings measures. The periods and accounting bases matter: GAAP net income and non-GAAP net income are not interchangeable.

Period or measure Reported result What it indicates
FY2025 revenue $496.1 million, up 16% from $429.2 million in FY2024 Annual growth remained strong. Camtek FY2025 results release, February 18, 2026.
FY2025 GAAP gross margin 50.5%, compared with 48.9% in FY2024 Year-over-year improvement in reported gross margin. Camtek FY2025 results release, February 18, 2026.
FY2025 GAAP operating income $128.2 million A reported GAAP operating result, not the same measure as net income. Camtek FY2025 results release, February 18, 2026.
FY2025 GAAP net income $50.7 million Reported under GAAP. Camtek FY2025 results release, February 18, 2026.
FY2025 non-GAAP net income and diluted EPS $159.0 million and $3.26 Non-GAAP figures use adjustments and should not be blended with GAAP results. Camtek FY2025 results release, February 18, 2026.
Q1 2026 revenue $121.7 million, up 2.5% year over year Growth was positive but much slower than FY2025’s annual rate. Camtek Q1 2026 results release, May 12, 2026.
Q1 2026 GAAP operating income and margin $27.3 million, down 17% year over year; 22.4% margin Operating income fell despite higher revenue. Camtek Q1 2026 results release, May 12, 2026.
Q1 2026 GAAP diluted EPS $0.63, versus $0.70 in Q1 2025 GAAP diluted earnings per share declined year over year. Camtek Q1 2026 results release, May 12, 2026.

The bear case starts with that divergence: Q1 revenue still increased, but GAAP operating income and GAAP diluted EPS fell. A single quarter does not establish a lasting deterioration, but investors should look for whether margin and earnings pressure persists as revenue grows.

Management’s outlook is a forecast, not a result

In its May 12, 2026 Q1 release, Camtek guided to Q2 revenue of $129–131 million and said it expected second-half 2026 revenue to grow by more than 25% compared with first-half revenue. Management cited backlog, pipeline, and order momentum. CEO Rafi Amit described incoming orders as having an “unprecedented start to the year” and said the company expected a second-half revenue surge. These are management’s forward-looking expectations; they do not guarantee that orders will ship on schedule, be accepted, or translate into the forecast revenue and earnings.

How to assess the bearish case

Customer and regional concentration

Camtek’s FY2025 Form 20-F says approximately 91% of 2025 revenue came from Asia Pacific, mostly China, Taiwan, and South Korea. It also reports that one customer represented 11% of 2025 revenue. That mix makes results sensitive to regional investment cycles and the spending decisions of large customers. Trade restrictions or geopolitical disruption could add uncertainty, but the filing’s exposure figures do not by themselves show that a disruption or sales decline will occur.

Orders can take time to become revenue

The same filing says Camtek’s sales cycle, particularly with new customers or in new markets, may take several quarters and can include on-site evaluation. This matters when interpreting order announcements: announced demand is encouraging, but it is not equivalent to immediate recognized revenue or proof of repeat purchases. Camtek reported inventory write-offs of approximately $3.7 million in 2025 and $4.3 million in 2024, and classified $15.6 million of inventory as non-current at year-end 2025. These figures make inventory quality and conversion worth monitoring; they do not establish that all non-current inventory will be written off.

Operating exposure in Israel

Camtek’s filing identifies its headquarters and main manufacturing and integration facility in northern Israel. It warns that hostilities, trade disruption, reserve-duty absences, and regional instability could affect operations and deliveries. Those are disclosed contingencies, not a prediction that production will be interrupted. For a manufacturer dependent on timely equipment delivery, any actual disruption would be relevant to execution and customer schedules.

Control and governance considerations

The FY2025 Form 20-F describes joint controlling shareholders and says concentrated ownership can make a change in control more difficult. It also discusses potential conflicts associated with management roles in affiliated entities. These are governance considerations for shareholders; they do not demonstrate that a particular conflict has harmed results.

What could undermine the sell thesis

Strong 2025 results and a liquid balance sheet

Camtek ended 2025 with $851.1 million in cash, deposits, and marketable securities, and reported a record $496.1 million in FY2025 revenue. It reported $849.7 million in cash, deposits, and marketable securities on March 31, 2026. That liquidity provides a cushion against near-term financing pressure, although it does not eliminate operating, demand, or valuation risk.

AI-related orders offer a demand signal

On February 10, 2026, Camtek announced a $25 million Hawk order from a tier-1 IDM for AI applications, bringing announced 2026 delivery orders from that customer to $45 million. This is a concrete order announcement, but it concerns one customer; it does not establish company-wide backlog, repeatability, or when all associated revenue will be recognized.

Camtek’s February 2026 investor presentation described approximately 50% of revenue as supporting AI-related applications and included a $750 million revenue target model. The presentation frames the target as a company goal. It should be treated as management’s aspiration rather than achieved revenue or an independent forecast.

Visual Layer adds potential, not yet demonstrated financial contribution

Camtek said its acquisition of AI company Visual Layer had closed in the Q1 2026 results release. The stated strategic aim is to add visual analytics capabilities; management has described possible improvements in defect detection and throughput and a potential future recurring software and analytics revenue stream. The available company disclosures cited here do not report standalone Visual Layer revenue or a measured post-acquisition financial impact, so the prospective benefits should not be counted as established earnings.

What an investor can—and cannot—conclude about selling

The operating evidence supports a watchful, conditional bearish case: Q1 2026 GAAP operating income and diluted EPS declined even as revenue rose, and the business has customer, regional, inventory, and operating-location exposures. The countercase is also substantial: FY2025 revenue and gross margin improved, liquidity was high, and management reported strong order activity and forecast acceleration later in 2026.

Whether those facts justify selling depends in part on the share price and the investor’s time horizon, tax position, risk tolerance, and portfolio concentration. The sources cited here do not establish a contemporaneous share price or an independently grounded valuation comparison, so they cannot show whether CAMT shares are cheap or expensive. A valuation-based sell decision would require a dated price and a transparent method for relating it to expected earnings or cash flow.

For a decision grounded in company performance, the next evidence to watch is whether Q2 results fall within management’s revenue guidance, whether the forecast second-half acceleration appears in reported results, and whether revenue growth supports GAAP operating income and diluted EPS. Order conversion, customer concentration, inventory, and any disclosed operational disruption also matter. A missed forecast or continuing earnings contraction would strengthen the bearish case; demonstrated growth with stable or improving profitability would weaken it.
