Usually, no—not solely because the market has fallen. A downturn is a reason to check that your 401(k) still matches your retirement timeline, goals, financial circumstances, and comfort with losses. If your plan remains appropriate, moving everything to cash can turn a decline on paper into a realized loss and leave you out of the market if it recovers. No one can reliably tell you when that recovery will happen.
The useful distinction is between rebalancing—restoring a mix you chose in advance—and changing your investment strategy because recent losses feel alarming. Review your holdings and plan, then act according to your circumstances and any rebalancing rule you already follow, rather than trying to guess the market’s next move.

What to check before changing anything
Your 401(k) is an employer-sponsored plan, and its investment menu and rules are specific to that plan. Before placing a trade, identify what you own and what the plan allows. Your account might hold a target-date fund, several funds you selected, or a concentrated set of investments. Some plan investments may be collective investment trusts rather than SEC-registered mutual funds or exchange-traded funds.

The names and structures of the options can also differ from plan to plan. Start with your account’s actual holdings and the plan materials, rather than assuming that a fund or strategy available to someone else is available to you.
- Review your account. Sign in to the plan website or check your latest statement. Note the funds, current allocation, and any available plan materials describing investment options, fees, and trading rules.
- Ask whether your circumstances changed. Consider whether retirement is closer, your financial security or income has changed, or your retirement goal is different. Those may justify reassessing your allocation; a market headline alone does not.
- Compare your current mix with your intended mix. A market move can change the proportions of stocks, bonds, and other holdings in your account. If you chose a target allocation, see whether the current weights have drifted from it.
- Use a deliberate rule. If your plan is to rebalance on a schedule or when a holding drifts beyond a threshold you selected, follow that rule instead of trying to identify a market bottom.
- Check the implications before trading. Consult your plan documents or administrator for plan-specific investment choices, fees, trading procedures, and restrictions.
It can help to separate two questions: “Has the market changed the value of my account?” and “Has something about my goals or situation changed?” A lower account value answers the first question, but does not automatically answer the second. A review is an opportunity to verify what you own, understand the plan’s options, and consider whether the mix remains suitable—not a requirement to trade.

The SEC cautions that “jumping totally out of the market and trying to time the market may not be the best long-term investment strategy.” That is general investor education, not a prediction that a particular market will recover or a recommendation for every investor. SEC Investor.gov: Is It Time to Rebalance Your Investment Portfolio?
When a change may make sense
Reassess your allocation if your retirement timeline, goal, financial circumstances, or ability or willingness to tolerate losses has materially changed. The mix that made sense earlier may no longer fit. But a lower account balance during a downturn does not, by itself, show that your long-term plan is wrong.
Ask whether retirement is now nearer than when you selected the allocation, whether your income or broader financial security has changed, or whether the retirement goal you are investing toward is different. Those are personal changes that can affect the decision. In contrast, a headline about falling prices does not tell you whether you need a different mix, how much risk is appropriate, or when to make a change.
Time horizon matters. The SEC says investors with more time to invest can generally afford to take more risk because their investments have more time to recover from market dips. That is a broad educational principle, not a personal allocation formula: the appropriate mix also depends on an investor’s goals and circumstances. SEC Investor.gov: Target Date Funds – Investor Bulletin (March 25, 2025)
Risk has both a practical and an emotional side. Consider not only how much loss you could financially bear, but also whether you can stick with your strategy during a decline. Comfort with losses does not mean ignoring risk; it means choosing an allocation that fits your circumstances and that you can maintain through changing markets. Rebalancing is different from reacting to a drop
Rebalancing brings a portfolio back toward its intended asset allocation after market movements have changed the weights. The SEC explains that an investor may need to rebalance to restore the original allocation. This can mean selling some assets that have grown beyond their intended share and buying others that have fallen below it; it is not a bet that the recently weaker asset will rebound immediately. SEC Investor.gov: Asset Allocation and Diversification
For example, if you selected a mix of asset classes, market movements can cause one part of the portfolio to become a larger or smaller share than you intended. Rebalancing is the process of returning toward that chosen mix. The goal is to maintain the allocation you selected, not to make a new forecast about which investment will perform best next.
Two common ways to decide when to review for rebalancing are:
- Calendar rule: Review at a preselected interval. SEC materials give six- or twelve-month reviews as examples of possible intervals, not recommendations or findings that those schedules suit everyone.
- Threshold rule: Review when an asset class has drifted beyond a percentage you selected in advance.
These are approaches for setting a process, not instructions to rebalance at every small market move. Rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently, according to SEC guidance. The important point is to use a deliberate rule rather than make repeated changes in response to headlines or recent performance. If you have not already chosen a rebalancing schedule or threshold, a drop is not a reason to invent a rule on the spot. First consider whether your intended allocation still fits. Then consult plan resources or a qualified professional if you need help establishing an approach suited to your circumstances. Avoid treating rebalancing as a way to guarantee a return or predict a recovery.
Choosing between a target-date fund and your own mix
Some 401(k) investors choose a target-date fund; others select and maintain a mix of the funds offered by their plan. Neither approach is automatically right for everyone. The choice depends on how much control and maintenance you want, whether the investments fit your retirement timeline and risk tolerance, and how they work alongside your other assets and expected sources of retirement income.
| Approach | How it works | What to examine |
|---|---|---|
| Target-date fund | Holds a diversified mix and adjusts its allocation over time along a glide path. | Whether the target year fits your plans; the glide path and risk level; fees; and how the fund fits with your other investments and retirement income. |
| Choose and maintain funds yourself | You select investments from the plan’s menu and decide whether and when to rebalance them. | Your intended allocation, the funds and fees available in your specific plan, and whether you will maintain the mix using a deliberate rule. |
The trade-off is not simply “easy” versus “hard.” A target-date fund can handle allocation changes within the fund, while building your own mix gives you more direct control but means you must monitor and maintain it. In either case, look at the actual options and fees in your employer’s plan. Compare how much ongoing involvement you want with the fund’s allocation, glide path, costs, and fit with your full retirement picture.
What a target-date fund does—and does not do
A target-date fund generally becomes more conservative over time according to its glide path, and it manages allocation changes within the fund. That can reduce the need to rebalance the fund’s holdings yourself, but it does not remove the need to check that the fund suits you. Target years and glide paths vary, and fees matter. Consider your other investments and retirement income as well: a fund’s target year does not account for every part of your financial life.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo assess a target-date fund, check whether its target year is reasonable for your retirement plans, how its glide path changes the investments over time, and what fees apply. Then consider whether the fund duplicates or complements investments you hold elsewhere and how it fits with other sources of retirement income. A fund may be a convenient way to hold a diversified mix, but “set it and forget it” should not mean assuming that it is appropriate without checking.

A target-date fund does not guarantee retirement income or a particular investment result. Review the fund information and your plan materials rather than assuming that a date in the fund’s name makes it appropriate. SEC Investor.gov: Target Date Funds – Investor Bulletin (March 25, 2025)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why moving to cash can be risky
Selling after a market fall can lock in a loss compared with the value before the decline. If the market then rises, an investor who is out of the market may miss that recovery. The timing and size of any recovery are uncertain; there is no reliable way to infer them from the fact that the market has dropped. Staying invested also does not guarantee a gain. The decision should follow your goals, timeline, and ability to bear losses, not a promise about what markets will do next.
Moving to cash can also turn a temporary response to fear into a new investment decision: when to get back into the market. No source here can say when a recovery will occur, and trying to time both an exit and a return means making two uncertain calls. That does not mean every investor should always hold the same investments. It means a decision to change should be grounded in a reassessment of your circumstances and intended allocation, rather than the hope of avoiding every further decline.

Frequently asked questions
Should I sell my 401(k) investments when the market drops?
A drop alone does not tell you that selling is right for your situation. First check whether your goals, time horizon, financial circumstances, or tolerance for losses have changed, and whether your chosen allocation still fits. Selling after a decline can lock in a loss and leave you out if the market recovers, but staying invested does not guarantee a gain.

When should I rebalance my 401(k)?
There is no universal interval or threshold that suits every investor. SEC guidance describes calendar reviews and threshold-based reviews as possible approaches, and says rebalancing tends to work best relatively infrequently. If you have already chosen a schedule or drift threshold, follow that rule rather than reacting to market headlines.
Does a target-date fund change its investments automatically?
A target-date fund generally changes its allocation over time along a glide path and manages allocation changes within the fund. Its target year, glide path, and fees vary, however. Check whether it fits your plans and how it coordinates with your other investments and retirement income; it does not guarantee a particular result or retirement income.
How do I know whether my allocation still fits my retirement timeline?
Review your intended mix alongside your retirement goal, how soon you expect to retire, your financial circumstances, and your ability and willingness to bear losses. A longer time horizon can generally allow more capacity for risk, but that principle is not a personal formula. Your plan materials or a qualified investment professional can help you assess your particular situation.

The Bottom Line
Bottom line: A market drop is a reason to review your 401(k), not an automatic reason to change it. Confirm what you own, check whether your allocation still fits your goals and circumstances, and rebalance only according to a deliberate plan. Be cautious about moving to cash in an attempt to time a recovery; neither its timing nor a particular investment result is guaranteed.
