These are one-time purchases. You can continue using the installed software without an annual subscription, but the purchase does not include Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive storage, Exchange Online, or SharePoint Online.
Office 2024 receives security and quality updates, but not continuing feature upgrades or the next major Office release. Consumer Office 2024 is scheduled to reach its retirement date on October 9, 2029, according to Microsoft’s lifecycle information.

Microsoft 365 Personal, Family, and Premium include the latest desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote. Apps can be installed on all of a subscriber’s devices and used on up to five devices simultaneously. Supported platforms include Windows PCs, Macs, iPhones, iPads, Android phones, and Android tablets, according to Microsoft’s plan comparison.
The subscriptions include security updates, bug fixes, new features, upgrades to future major versions, Microsoft support, and OneDrive storage. Personal provides 1 TB for the subscriber; Family and Premium provide 1 TB per person for each shared user. Copilot-related benefits are available only to the subscription owner, not additional Family or Premium members.

These are price comparisons, not equivalent-value comparisons. Microsoft 365 also includes cloud storage, use across multiple devices, feature upgrades, support, and other services. The calculation uses Microsoft’s current U.S. plan prices and Office Home 2024 price.
Office 2024 is financially attractive when all of these are true:
- You use one computer.
- You do not need the included OneDrive storage.
- You are happy with the 2024 feature set.
- You expect to use the software for several years.
- You do not need the services bundled with Microsoft 365.
What you give up by choosing Office 2024
Office 2024 is not a fully disconnected application. Internet access is needed to redeem and activate it, and periodic internet access is required to keep it activated and receive updates. Microsoft says Office 2024 is not suitable for fully disconnected situations, as explained in its Office 2024 FAQ.
You also miss some cloud-connected features. Microsoft lists PowerPoint Designer and Data Types in Excel as examples of features not included in one-time-purchase Office suites. Office 2024 can connect to supported Microsoft 365 services while it remains supported, but the purchase does not provide OneDrive, Exchange Online, or SharePoint Online services.
Microsoft 365 already includes the improvements introduced in Office 2024 and continues to add features, including collaboration, security, and intelligent features over time.
What happens if you stop paying for Microsoft 365?
When Microsoft 365 expires, the desktop apps eventually enter a reduced, view-only state. You can open and print existing documents, but you cannot edit them or create new documents in the desktop apps.

OneDrive storage returns to the free allowance of 5 GB. If your stored data exceeds that limit, you cannot upload, edit, or sync new files. Microsoft says it may delete OneDrive files after six months when the account remains over quota, so plan how to store or move your files before cancelling.

For a subscription bought directly from Microsoft, sign in at account.microsoft.com/services, find Microsoft 365, and select Cancel subscription. If the page shows Turn on recurring billing instead, recurring billing is already disabled and the plan will expire on the date shown. Subscriptions purchased through Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or another retailer generally need to be cancelled through that provider, as Microsoft explains in its cancellation instructions.
When Office Home 2024 is the better buy
Choose Office Home 2024 if you need Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote for personal, school, or other non-commercial use on one PC or Mac. It is a straightforward option if you want to pay once and do not need Outlook, cloud storage, or future feature upgrades.
The Home edition is not the right license for commercial use. A freelancer, company, or employee using the software for business should consider Office Home & Business 2024 instead—or Microsoft 365, depending on device and storage needs.
When Office Home & Business 2024 is worth considering
Office Home & Business 2024 costs $249.99 and adds Outlook plus commercial-use rights. It can make sense for a business owner who works from one computer, wants a one-time license, and already has a separate email, backup, or cloud-storage solution.

When Microsoft 365 Personal is the better buy
Microsoft 365 Personal is the practical choice when you move between devices or want the subscription to include storage and future versions. The $99.99 annual price buys more than desktop applications:
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote on supported devices.
- 1 TB of OneDrive storage.
- Use on up to five devices at the same time.
- Ongoing feature, security, and quality updates.
- Access to future major versions without buying another license.
- Copilot-related features for the subscription owner.
It is also easier to justify if you would otherwise purchase cloud storage separately. The subscription may be poor value if you use one computer, do not use OneDrive, do not care about new features, and expect to keep the same installation for well beyond two years.
When Microsoft 365 Family saves the most money
Family costs $129.99 per year and supports one to six people. Each shared person has a separate Microsoft account, Office access, and 1 TB of storage. If two people would otherwise buy separate Office Home 2024 licenses, the comparison is already close:

Microsoft’s current system-requirements page lists Windows 11 for Office 2024. For Macs, Office supports the three most recent versions of macOS. An older Microsoft FAQ still refers to “Windows 10 and later,” but Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. The current system-requirements page should be treated as authoritative; plan on Windows 11.

If Office is already installed and you are unsure which license you have, use these paths:
- Windows: open a Word, Excel, or another Office app, then select File → Account.
- Mac: open an Office app, then select the app name in the macOS menu bar → About.
These screens identify whether the installation is Microsoft 365, Office 2024, or another edition.

A Microsoft 365 subscription already includes the features in Office 2024, along with additional features and services. Buying Office 2024 as well usually creates duplicate desktop-app licenses rather than adding useful capability, according to Microsoft’s Office 2024 FAQ.
A business with a specific licensing or continuity requirement might need a separate perpetual license for a particular computer. For an ordinary household user, paying for both is usually wasted money.
