Re:

Should You Buy an HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini or Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro?

At equal specifications and price, the Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro is the safer default. The HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini can be the better deal when it is cheaper, better equipped or offers verified storage flexibility.

If two listings have comparable processors, memory, storage, condition and price, the Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro is the safer default: its service documentation is easy to find, and its common M.2-plus-2.5-inch storage arrangement is straightforward. Choose the HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini if it costs less, comes with better components, or its particular configuration offers the storage options or ports you need. These are older 8th-generation business PCs; the exact listing matters more than the logo.

Quick verdict: which one is the better buy?

  • Choose the Dell when the two are similarly equipped and priced, especially if you want an M.2 boot drive plus a 2.5-inch SATA drive or value readily available service information. Dell provides official setup and specification documentation and a support page with manuals.
  • Choose the HP when it is meaningfully cheaper, has more or better RAM or storage, has the exact ports you need, or its verified configuration provides useful additional M.2 storage flexibility.
  • Choose neither for modern gaming: both rely on integrated graphics and compact cooling, rather than a conventional internal graphics card.

Before comparing prices, identify the exact CPU, RAM arrangement, SSD condition and capacity, wireless hardware, power adapter, included drive hardware, return terms and total cost after shipping or upgrades. Without those details, a model-name comparison can be misleading.

What configurations do the model names cover?

The HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini and Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro were sold in multiple configurations. Depending on the unit, either may have a Core i3, i5 or i7 8th-generation processor, two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, optional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and configurable ports. Storage options and the included power adapter also vary. The HP’s G4 Desktop Mini specification document describes configuration-dependent options; Dell’s 7060 Micro specifications do the same for the Micro chassis.

Make sure the comparison is between the HP Mini and Dell Micro, not an HP Small Form Factor (SFF) or Dell OptiPlex 7060 SFF or tower. The larger chassis can have different memory layouts, drive bays and expansion options, none of which should be assumed for these compact versions.

  • Renewed Quality: Professionally tested and renewed to perform like new; may show minor cosmetic wear.

How do their specifications compare?

Feature HP EliteDesk 800 G4 Mini Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro
Processor family 8th-generation Intel Core options; exact CPU depends on listing 8th-generation Intel Core options; exact CPU depends on listing
Memory Two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots; 32 GB is a commonly cited practical maximum for these configurations; verify the exact unit Two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots; 32 GB is a commonly cited practical maximum for these configurations; see Dell’s specifications
M.2 storage Configuration-dependent; additional M.2 positions do not necessarily mean additional NVMe storage sockets One M.2 NVMe storage position is commonly specified
2.5-inch SATA storage Optional on some configurations; verify the caddy, cable and mounting hardware A 2.5-inch drive position is supported in applicable configurations; verify caddy, cable and mounting hardware
Ports and displays Configuration-dependent; optional video and USB-C modules Configuration-dependent; optional video and rear-panel modules
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Optional; verify the installed card, antenna and cables Optional; verify the installed card, antenna and cables
Expansion and mounting Compact chassis; no conventional desktop PCIe graphics-card slot Compact chassis; no conventional desktop PCIe graphics-card slot

The values above describe common configurations, not a guarantee about a particular refurbished machine. Neither model name tells you which CPU, RAM, drive, wireless module, adapter or port module is actually included.

Which processor and memory should you choose?

The processor is a more meaningful performance difference than the manufacturer. The Core i5-8500T is generally a sensible value for office work, browsing, light development and many home-server jobs. The Core i7-8700T has six cores and twelve threads, which can help with compiling, virtual machines and heavier concurrent workloads. It is not automatically worth a large used-market premium: for ordinary desktop use, a larger SSD or more RAM may be the better use of the budget. Core i3 or Pentium listings make sense mainly when they are substantially cheaper and the work is light.

These are compact, low-power systems, not workstation replacements. Similar CPUs should deliver broadly similar results across the two models, while cooling condition, firmware power behavior, memory configuration and SSD health can affect the experience. Do not assume a CPU upgrade is a simple or cost-effective path: BIOS support, cooling, power-adapter rating and component costs all matter.

For most buyers, 16 GB of RAM is a better starting point than 8 GB. Consider 32 GB for virtualization, development or multiple containers, after confirming that the exact unit supports the configuration. Check the module count and memory type rather than trusting a listing headline. Two matched modules enable dual-channel memory, which is particularly helpful to integrated graphics. A single 16 GB module can still be adequate for office work, but may give up some graphics bandwidth.

Which has the better storage and upgrade path?

Dell: a straightforward M.2-plus-SATA setup

The Dell commonly combines one M.2 NVMe storage position with a 2.5-inch SATA drive position. That can make a practical two-drive arrangement: a fast M.2 boot drive and a second SATA SSD or hard drive. The SATA drive may require a compatible caddy, cable, rails or screws; a visible bay does not mean those parts are included.

HP: potentially more M.2 flexibility, but inspect the exact unit

The HP can be attractive for storage experimentation, and configurations with more than one M.2-based device have been documented. But an M.2 connector may be intended for Wi-Fi or another module rather than an NVMe drive, and supported combinations depend on the motherboard, installed options, firmware and cables. ServeTheHome’s HP 800 G4 Mini review and guide discusses its internal layout and expansion. Check listing photographs or ask the seller to confirm the actual storage connectors and included drive hardware; do not treat every HP as a two-NVMe system.

  • 【READY TO WORK】Our refurbished desktop computers has already installed the Windows 11 Pro operating system and has also provided professional technical support to ensure that you can use the computer smoothly, safely and safely

For either machine, the installed SSD’s health and capacity matter more than a theoretical maximum. A larger drive with a known condition may be a better deal than a bare unit that requires a replacement drive and proprietary mounting parts.

Do the ports, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth match your needs?

Port layouts vary by configuration. Count the ports in the actual listing rather than relying on photos of a different unit. Check the number and type of front USB-A ports, whether front USB-C is present, rear USB-A speeds, Ethernet, headphone and microphone connections, and the exact display outputs. If you need several monitors, HDMI, VGA or USB-C video, confirm the specific port module and whether the USB-C port supports DisplayPort Alt Mode. Dell documents optional rear and video configurations in its 7060 Micro guide; HP likewise describes configurable ports in its Desktop Mini specification PDF.

Wireless is optional on used units. Confirm that the Wi-Fi card is installed and that the antenna and internal leads are present and undamaged; “Wi-Fi ready” may not mean a complete, working setup. ServeTheHome identifies an Intel 9560 802.11ac 2×2 combination card as one HP configuration in its review. For a dependable home server, wired Ethernet is usually the more sensible connection.

How well do they handle office work, servers and games?

  • Office, browsing and streaming: Either can suit basic desktop duties when equipped with a suitable CPU, 16 GB RAM and a healthy SSD.
  • Programming and virtualization: A Core i7-8700T and 32 GB RAM can be useful for compiling and running several virtual machines, but the actual memory, storage and cooling condition should guide the choice.
  • Containers and home services: Both can serve as compact Linux or homelab nodes. Choose based on RAM, wired networking, storage arrangement and price, not the badge.
  • Media serving: Suitability depends on codec, transcoding demand, operating system and hardware-acceleration setup. Do not assume every media workload will be handled well just because the processor is an i7.
  • Gaming: Integrated Intel UHD Graphics can handle desktop graphics, video playback and some older or lightweight games, but neither is a good choice for demanding modern games.

For Linux, confirm that the chosen distribution supports the installed wireless chipset and check firmware settings for virtualization features such as Intel VT-x and VT-d if required. A single consumer SSD is not redundant storage; back up important data regardless of chassis.

Which is quieter and cooler?

There is no sound basis here for declaring one model universally quieter. Fan behavior depends on the CPU, BIOS fan curve, dust, thermal compound, ambient temperature and workload. Small fans can become audible during sustained work, and a higher-end CPU can raise heat and noise. ServeTheHome’s HP review notes airflow concerns when compact units are stacked. Give each machine room to breathe and ask about fan noise and cleaning history if buying used. Owner reports of noise are anecdotal, not controlled comparisons.

Will either work with Windows 11?

Check the exact CPU, TPM status, Secure Boot setting and firmware against Microsoft’s current Windows 11 requirements before buying. Do not treat “Windows installed” as proof of a valid license: ask whether Windows is activated, which edition is installed, and whether the seller can explain the machine’s activation entitlement or provide legitimate license details. A clean installation and a claimed activation are separate issues. Microsoft’s Windows 11 download and installation page is a starting point for installation information.

What should you inspect before buying refurbished?

Ask the seller for specifics and include any missing accessories or upgrades in your total cost. A low sticker price can stop being a bargain once you add an adapter, antenna, caddy, cable, RAM or SSD.

  • Identity: Confirm the exact Mini or Micro chassis and the processor model. Do not accept a listing that uses an SFF or tower specification for a different unit.
  • Memory and storage: Confirm RAM capacity, module count and type, plus SSD type, capacity and health if available.
  • Power and accessories: Confirm a compatible, correctly rated adapter is included. Check for Wi-Fi antenna, drive caddy, SATA cable, mounting hardware and any display adapter you need.
  • Firmware and management: Ask whether BIOS access is available and whether there is a BIOS password or corporate-management lock.
  • Physical condition: Inspect the fan, chassis, feet, front USB ports, antenna connectors and evidence of dust or damage.
  • Seller protection: Check the return period, warranty, shipping cost and seller’s stated condition before comparing totals.
  • Windows: Ask which edition is installed and whether activation is confirmed; distinguish that from a transferable key or clean recovery media.

Walk away if the CPU is undisclosed, the seller cannot confirm BIOS access, a required adapter is missing, or an unknown SSD is sold without meaningful return protection. These risks can matter more than the difference between the two model names.

Which one should different buyers choose?

Buyer or use Practical choice
Same CPU, RAM, storage, condition and price Dell OptiPlex 7060 Micro, for the straightforward service and common M.2-plus-2.5-inch layout
Lowest-cost usable desktop Whichever verified listing has the lower total cost and at least a suitable CPU, 16 GB RAM and healthy SSD
Two internal drives, including 2.5-inch SATA Dell, if the required caddy and cable are present or affordable
Potential multi-M.2 storage configuration HP, only after confirming the exact connectors, drive support and included hardware
Linux desktop or homelab node Either; prioritize RAM, wired Ethernet, storage and firmware access
Virtualization or heavier multitasking Whichever has the better combination of Core i7-8700T, 32 GB RAM, healthy storage and fair price
Modern gaming Neither; look for a system with suitable dedicated graphics instead

These are both older platforms. If either listing costs close to a newer, more efficient mini PC, compare the newer system’s performance, warranty and connectivity before committing. No reliable current street-price range is established here, so compare live listings by their full delivered cost rather than relying on a generic price target.
