Should You Buy a Laptop Now or Wait for Prices to Change?

If your laptop still reliably handles the work you need it to do, waiting is reasonable. If it is failing or cannot run essential software, buy a suitable replacement when you find one at a price you can accept. Forecasts point to higher memory costs for PC makers, but they do not tell you what a particular laptop will cost later or guarantee that buying now will save money.

What current price forecasts do—and do not—tell you

Gartner forecast that memory would account for 23% of total PC bill-of-materials in 2026, up from 16% in 2025. That is an analyst forecast about manufacturers’ component costs, not a measured increase in laptop retail prices. It does not mean every laptop will get more expensive, or that a specific model will cost more if you wait. Gartner’s February 26, 2026 forecast also says rising AI PC prices may delay the projected 50% AI PC market-penetration milestone until 2028; that, too, is a forecast rather than a settled outcome.

The available forecasts do not identify a reliable future sale date, a price for a particular laptop, or a guaranteed price low point. So the practical question is less “Will prices fall?” than “What will waiting cost me, and can I find a configuration that meets my needs at an acceptable price today?”

Decide based on your current laptop and your deadline

Waiting makes sense if your laptop is still doing its job

If your current device is reliable and runs the applications you need, replacing it just because prices might change is an optional expense. You can keep using it while you compare configurations, monitor prices, or wait for a deal that fits your budget. Tom’s Guide’s 2026 buying guidance likewise frames the choice around whether you need a laptop now. Read its buy-now-or-wait guidance.

Buying now may be worth it if the machine is failing or blocking essential work

If the laptop is unreliable, too slow for required tasks, or unable to run software you need, waiting has a real cost: lost use, interruptions, or difficulty meeting work or school demands. In that situation, choose a suitable model at a price you can accept rather than relying on an uncertain forecast to deliver a better deal later.

Compare the whole laptop, not one headline specification

A low price or a processor name alone does not tell you whether a laptop is the right value. Compare complete configurations against the applications and tasks you actually use. Microsoft and HP both organize laptop recommendations around use cases; Dell’s gaming guidance also highlights graphics, display, memory, storage, and cooling as relevant factors. Microsoft’s laptop guidance, HP’s laptop buying guide, and Dell’s gaming laptop guide provide starting points; verify specifications for the exact model before buying.

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
  • Total price for the same configuration: Compare laptops with equivalent RAM and storage, not just the lowest advertised starting price.
  • Performance for your workload: Match processor and graphics capability to the apps you use. Gaming and some creative work can make graphics performance and cooling especially important.
  • Memory and storage: Check the capacity included and whether it can be upgraded. Do not assume two versions of the same laptop have identical specifications.
  • Screen and portability: Consider display size and quality, weight, battery life, ports, and form factor alongside performance.
  • Ownership terms: Include warranty and return terms in the comparison, especially for refurbished or open-box devices.

Consider prior-generation, refurbished, and open-box options carefully

A last-generation laptop or refurbished business model may offer a way to meet your needs without buying the newest release. Tom’s Guide names ThinkPads and Dell Latitudes as examples to investigate, but that is editorial advice, not a guarantee about any particular listing. Before buying, check the exact specifications, device condition, battery, seller reputation, warranty, and return window.

Do not count on a future memory upgrade without checking the model

Some laptops with accessible SO-DIMM slots may allow memory upgrades, but upgradeability varies by model. Confirm the exact model’s supported memory type and maximum capacity, and check whether the proposed upgrade affects the warranty. Do this before buying a separate memory kit; do not treat an assumed future upgrade as a reason to buy a laptop with too little memory now.

For gaming, weigh months of use against uncertain future hardware

If your current laptop cannot run the games you want, waiting for a hypothetical next generation means going without the capability you need today for an uncertain future gain. Dell’s advice applies specifically to gaming laptops, not every laptop category: compare what a suitable machine can do now with what you might gain by waiting, without assuming there is a universally best point in the product cycle. Dell’s gaming laptop guide discusses that trade-off.
