Re:

Should You Buy a Car Now or Wait for a Better Deal?

There is no guaranteed better deal ahead. Use current U.S. market data as context, then decide by your car’s reliability and the full cost of the specific vehicle and offer.

There is no reliable sign that waiting will guarantee a cheaper car. In the U.S., August 2026 data showed new-car prices rising modestly year over year, while incentives and inventory had eased from earlier levels. Used-car supply was tight as well. If your current car is dependable and replacing it is optional, waiting can give you time to save and compare. If you need a replacement, judge the specific vehicle’s out-the-door price, financing, insurance, trade-in value, and condition—not a forecast about the national market.

Is now a good time to buy a car?

It can be a good time to buy the right car at a price that fits your budget, but the market data does not point to a broad, imminent clearance. Kelley Blue Book (KBB), citing Cox Automotive, put the average new-vehicle transaction price at $50,089 in August 2026, up 1.9% from a year earlier. That average is influenced by what people buy: luxury vehicles, pickups, and expensive trims push it higher, so it is not a price prediction for a particular model.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Incentives equaled 6.5% of the average transaction price that month, down from 6.6% in July and declining for three consecutive months. New-vehicle supply was 73 days in August, compared with 77 in July and roughly 90 days in January and February, according to Cox Automotive vAuto data reported by KBB. These figures point to opportunities on individual vehicles, not a guarantee that dealers will discount broadly. KBB’s August market update says careful shoppers could find deals, including possible opportunities on outgoing 2026 models as 2027 models arrive; the timing and size of any discount are not assured. Affordability remains a constraint. Cox Automotive and Moody’s Analytics estimated that paying for the average new car took 35.5 weeks of income in August 2026—0.1 weeks more than in July but 1.3 weeks less than in August 2025. The average monthly payment was $770, up 2.6% year over year. These are broad market measures, not estimates of what you will pay: your vehicle, down payment, credit, loan term, taxes, and insurance all affect the household cost. See Cox Automotive market insights.

When should you buy now, and when should you wait?

Buying now may make sense if you need reliable transportation

  • Your current car has safety problems, is unreliable, or needs repairs that make keeping it impractical.
  • You have found a specific vehicle with a competitive written out-the-door price, and its total cost fits your budget.
  • A current manufacturer incentive or financing offer improves the total cost after you check eligibility and whether it can be combined with other offers.
  • Your trade-in has a strong offer, or the cost and risk of continuing to drive your current car outweigh the cost of replacing it.

A new car is not automatically the answer to a repair problem. Compare the likely cost of keeping your present car with the full cost of replacing it, including financing, insurance, taxes, and fees. If the car is unsafe or its reliability threatens your ability to work or meet essential needs, the cost of waiting may be more than a repair bill.

Waiting may make sense if replacement is optional

  • Your current car is dependable and safe.
  • You can use the time to build a larger down payment, reduce other debt, or compare more vehicles and dealer offers.
  • The replacement you are considering would leave too little room in your budget for insurance, maintenance, and other expenses.

Waiting can improve your personal readiness even if market prices do not fall. Current evidence does not establish that vehicle prices or loan rates will be better later. The Federal Reserve’s May 2026 Beige Book described softer dealer demand tied to affordability and fuel costs; it did not forecast retail prices. Treat a possible future discount as uncertain, not as a reason to delay a necessary purchase. Read the Federal Reserve’s May 2026 Beige Book.

When will new-car prices drop?

No available market data can establish when prices will drop, or whether a particular model will become cheaper. The August 2026 average transaction price was up 1.9% year over year, and the market had less new-car supply and lower incentives than earlier in the year. Those conditions do not support treating a market-wide price drop as imminent. They also do not rule out a good deal on a particular vehicle.

Instead of trying to time a national average, track the exact model, trim, and location you would buy. KBB says its Local Fair Purchase Price is based on recent local transactions and updated weekly. Use it as a reference point alongside written quotes from dealers; it is a benchmark, not a promise that a dealer will offer that price. Learn how KBB’s Fair Purchase Price works.

Is a used car a better deal than a new car?

Not automatically. In August 2026, KBB reported an average used-car sale price of $27,239—the highest since December 2022—with 44 days of supply. Tight supply and high used prices can limit the savings on a specific vehicle. Still, the average price gap between used and new vehicles can be substantial: Edmunds transaction data reported by the Associated Press put the average three-year-old used vehicle at $32,553 in June 2026, compared with $48,899 for a new vehicle. That is a comparison of averages, not of equivalent models, mileage, condition, or equipment. See Associated Press automotive coverage.

Compare actual candidates, not the labels “new” and “used.” A used car’s lower asking price may be offset by a higher loan rate, needed repairs, shorter remaining warranty, or a more expensive insurance quote. A new car may cost more but come with a different warranty and financing offer. For a used vehicle, factor in mileage, service history, condition, an independent inspection, and the coverage that remains. The better value is the vehicle whose total cost and condition make sense for your needs.

Compare the full cost, not just the monthly payment

A low monthly payment can conceal a long loan, a high total interest bill, or add-ons that raise the amount financed. Compare each offer on the same basis, using the exact vehicle and written terms. Keep the vehicle price and trade-in negotiation separate so a strong-looking trade allowance does not obscure an inflated purchase price.

What to compare What to check
Out-the-door price Vehicle price plus taxes, registration, dealer fees, and any add-ons. Ask for the total in writing.
Financing APR, loan term, amount financed, and total repayment. Compare a lender preapproval with the dealer’s written offer.
Incentives Cash rebate versus promotional APR, eligibility rules, and whether offers can be combined. Confirm the terms in writing.
Insurance A quote for the exact model and trim before you commit; premiums vary by vehicle and driver.
Trade-in Equity and multiple bids obtained separately from the vehicle-price negotiation.
Used-car condition Mileage, service history, inspection findings, and remaining warranty.
Keeping your current car Likely repair and maintenance costs, reliability, safety, and the practical risk of a breakdown.

For market context, Cox Automotive’s 2025 Car Buyer Journey Study, released in January 2026, found that 62% of surveyed buyers felt leasing or owning a car was too costly. The study surveyed 2,300 consumers in fall 2025 who had bought a new or used vehicle within the prior 12 months. It describes the views of those respondents, not the affordability of a specific deal. Cox Automotive president of Retail Solutions Lori Wittman said buyers want “efficiency, transparency and tools that actually help them easily navigate their vehicle purchase.” Read the Cox Automotive study.

When comparing financing, do not assume the cash rebate and promotional APR can be combined. Ask the dealer to show the price and total repayment under each eligible option, then compare them using the same loan term and down payment. A lower APR can be valuable, but a cash incentive may be better for some buyers; the result depends on the written offer and your financing terms. Confirm eligibility and any stacking restrictions before signing.

A practical process for deciding and shopping

  1. Decide whether the replacement is necessary. Assess safety, reliability, repair needs, and the cost and risk of keeping your current car. If it is safe and dependable, you can take time to compare.
  2. Set a total-cost limit. Include the purchase price, taxes and fees, financing, insurance, and expected ownership costs. Get insurance quotes for the exact vehicles and trims you are considering.
  3. Get financing options before visiting a dealer. Obtain a lender preapproval, then compare its APR, term, and total repayment with the dealer’s written offer. Do not choose by monthly payment alone.
  4. Request local quotes for the same configuration. Compare the out-the-door price for the same model, trim, and equipment at more than one dealer. Widen your search area if the extra travel is practical.
  5. Get trade-in bids separately. Collect multiple offers before negotiating the vehicle price, so the trade allowance and purchase price remain clear.
  6. Check current offers and inventory. Review manufacturer incentives and ask about the exact model year in stock. An outgoing model may be discounted as a newer model arrives, but there is no guaranteed discount or timing.
  7. Buy only when the specific deal works. If the written terms fit your budget and the car meets your needs, you do not have to wait for a broad market signal. If not, keep your current car if practical and revisit your options.

Before accepting a quote, make sure it identifies the vehicle configuration and the complete out-the-door amount, not just a headline price or payment. If you are shopping across dealers, request quotes for the same trim and equipment so the comparison is meaningful. For a trade, obtain bids separately and compare them with the purchase offer; this helps reveal whether a favorable-looking allowance is offset elsewhere in the deal.

Common timing mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting for a predicted price drop. Market averages cannot tell you what a particular dealer will charge later, and the cited data does not forecast a broad decline.
  • Assuming a used car is cheap because it is used. Compare the vehicle’s price, condition, loan, warranty, and insurance—not just its age.
  • Focusing on payment instead of total borrowing cost. A longer term can lower the monthly payment while increasing total interest paid.
  • Letting the trade-in blur the deal. Separate bids make it easier to see what you are paying for the car and receiving for your old one.
  • Treating an advertised incentive as guaranteed savings. Check eligibility and whether the offer stacks with financing or other incentives, then confirm the written terms.
  • Using a national average as your target price. Prices vary by model, trim, location, and deal structure. Use local transaction data and multiple written quotes to judge the vehicle you actually want.

There is no single “best month” or market signal in the evidence that guarantees a better price. The useful decision is personal: buy when transportation is needed and the complete offer is affordable, or wait when your current car is reliable and waiting improves your budget or gives you time to compare.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is now a good time to buy a car?

It can be if you need a replacement and find a specific vehicle at an affordable written out-the-door price. August 2026 data showed a $50,089 average new-car transaction price, modest 1.9% year-over-year growth, declining incentives, and 73 days of supply. That supports looking for selective deals, not assuming a broad clearance is coming.

When will new-car prices drop?

The available market data cannot predict when prices will drop or whether a particular model will become cheaper. Track the exact model and trim, use local transaction benchmarks such as KBB’s weekly Local Fair Purchase Price, and compare written dealer quotes.

Should I buy a new or used car?

Compare specific vehicles rather than assuming used is automatically cheaper. Used prices, mileage, condition, loan rate, remaining warranty, repairs, and insurance all matter. August 2026 used-car supply was 44 days, while a June comparison showed a lower average price for a three-year-old used vehicle than for a new one—but those averages are not like-for-like.

Should I wait if my current car still runs?

If it is dependable and safe and replacement is optional, waiting can give you time to save a down payment and compare options. But current market data does not establish that prices or loan rates will be better later. If repairs, safety, or reliability make replacement necessary, judge the actual offer and the cost of continuing to drive your current car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I compare besides the car’s price?

Compare the out-the-door price, APR, loan term and total repayment, incentive eligibility, insurance quote for the exact trim, trade-in bids, and—on a used car—condition, mileage, inspection, and remaining warranty. Consider the likely repair and reliability costs of keeping your current car too.

The Bottom Line

Buy now if you need dependable transportation and the exact deal fits your total budget; wait if your current car is reliable and time would help you save or compare. August 2026 market data does not promise a near-term price drop. Compare local written quotes, financing, insurance, and trade-in offers instead of betting on a national forecast.
