Nova Launcher Prime is worth considering if you want more control over your Galaxy home screen, but owning a Samsung phone alone is no reason to buy it. Prime’s strongest paid features are gestures, app-drawer organization, hidden apps and icon swipe actions. One UI Home already handles everyday customization and remains the better fit for Samsung-specific integration, low maintenance and many foldable users.
What Nova Launcher Prime adds
Nova Launcher is the free home-screen app; Nova Launcher Prime is a license that unlocks extra features inside it. Prime is not a separate launcher, so install the free Nova Launcher app as well. Nova’s FAQ explains the purchase options and app relationship.
On a Galaxy phone, Nova replaces the home screen and app drawer—not Samsung Settings, Quick Settings, the lock screen, notification system or Samsung’s other system apps. It is a launcher upgrade, not a complete replacement for One UI.

Which Prime features are worth paying for?
Gestures and icon shortcuts
Prime lets you assign actions to gestures such as double-tapping, swiping or pinching on the home screen. For example, you could double-tap to lock the phone or swipe up to open an app or Nova action. You can also assign a second action to an app icon by swiping on it, which can reduce the number of shortcuts on a crowded screen. These are useful only if you will configure and remember them; behavior can differ with Android navigation settings.
App-drawer groups and hidden apps
A home-screen folder collects shortcuts where you place them; an app-drawer group organizes apps in the drawer itself. Prime’s groups can help if you have many installed apps and want categories or tabs. Hiding an app removes it from the visible drawer; it does not uninstall the app or secure its contents. Do not use this as a substitute for Secure Folder, app locking or device security.

More layout control
Nova offers more adjustable presentation choices for grids, spacing, dock, folders, labels, icons and scrolling. That is most valuable when you have already tried Samsung’s controls and still cannot get the layout you want. Samsung supports home-screen editing, widgets, folders, wallpapers, icons and Galaxy Themes; its theme guidance notes that themes can affect wallpapers, icons and some default-app visuals. Theme availability varies by device, carrier and software version.
Backup and restore
Nova can save a launcher layout and settings, which can be useful when moving to another Android phone, resetting a device or experimenting with layouts. Treat a backup as a way to restore Nova’s configuration, not a perfect clone of the phone: widgets may need to be set up again, and their internal state, account sign-ins and third-party app data are not guaranteed to return with the launcher backup.

What may change when you leave One UI Home
Samsung’s launcher is not just a bare starting point. It is the option with the strongest Samsung-specific home-screen behavior, and some integrations depend on it. For example, Samsung says the Game Launcher setting for showing game icons on both Game Launcher and the Home/Apps screens is available only with One UI Home; the option is not shown with a third-party launcher. That example does not mean Nova disables every Samsung app or feature. Some Samsung apps continue to work independently, while other launcher-related behavior may appear differently, be unavailable or vary by model. Before switching, identify the particular Samsung integration you rely on rather than assuming either that everything will work unchanged or that Nova breaks it all.

Be especially cautious if you use a Galaxy Z Fold, a tablet, DeX, a work-managed device or unusual inner and cover-screen layouts. A layout designed for a conventional phone may not behave the same way across displays or modes. Nova says it is being maintained for compatibility with modern Android in its January 20, 2026 update, but that statement does not establish that every feature works perfectly on every Galaxy configuration. Test the specific feature on your device and software version.
How to install Nova and make it the default
- In Google Play, install Nova Launcher. Open it and follow its setup prompts.
- If you decide to pay, install or activate Nova Launcher Prime. Check the purchase screen for the plan, price and any renewal terms before confirming; the Prime app by itself is not the home-screen replacement.
- On the Galaxy, open Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Home app, then select Nova Launcher. Samsung’s default-app instructions confirm the general route through Settings and Apps. Menu wording can differ by model, carrier and One UI version.
- Build or import your layout. Once it is set up, create a Nova backup so you have a saved configuration if you reset the phone or experiment further.
If the phone returns to One UI Home
- Go back to Settings → Apps → Choose default apps → Home app and select Nova again.
- Open Nova’s app information and check that it can act as the default home app.
- If the chooser is stuck, clear the relevant default for Nova or One UI Home, press Home and choose Nova again.
- Restart the phone and update Nova and One UI Home. Samsung explains how to update One UI Home through the Play Store or Galaxy Store.
- If your Nova layout is missing, restore a saved Nova backup. For a Samsung-specific problem, temporarily choose One UI Home to check whether the issue depends on the launcher.
Price, purchase options and Nova’s current policy
As of August 18, 2026, the US Google Play result for the lifetime Prime listing displayed $29.99. That is a region- and store-specific observed price, not a universal or guaranteed price. Nova’s FAQ says Prime is available as a yearly subscription or a lifetime purchase. Check the live Play Store screen for your account and country before buying; prices, taxes, promotions and plan presentation can change. Older references to $4.99 should not be assumed to describe the current US offer.

Nova’s January 20, 2026 statement says the company intends to honor existing Prime purchases, keep Prime features working for existing users and keep Prime ad-free. It also says Nova is evaluating ads for the free version and exploring yearly and lifetime Prime purchases. These are the company’s stated policies at that time, not a guarantee that future pricing or free-tier policy will never change. Google Play identifies Instabridge Sweden AB as the developer on the Prime listing.
If an optional Nova feature requests Android AccessibilityService access, review the permission and why the feature needs it before enabling it. Google Play says Nova uses this permission for optional support of certain system functions, including desktop gestures, in its free-app listing. That disclosure is not, by itself, proof of misuse or proof that every permission is risk-free; disable optional access you do not need.
Choose the launcher that matches your needs
Buy Prime if you want programmable control
- You specifically want home-screen gestures or swipe actions on icons.
- You need app-drawer groups, hidden apps or finer control over layout and presentation.
- You are comfortable setting up a third-party launcher and accept that some Samsung launcher integrations can change.
- You value reusing a saved launcher layout across Android devices.
Try free Nova first if you are uncertain
The free app is the sensible compatibility and usability test before paying. Use it to see whether Nova feels right on your model, whether gestures behave as you expect, and whether widgets and animations work acceptably for your setup. The Prime purchase is easiest to justify when you already know you want its paid features.
Stay with One UI Home if integration matters more
- You are satisfied with Samsung’s home screen and only want ordinary themes, wallpapers, widgets or folders.
- You rely on features tied to One UI Home, want minimal setup, or do not want to troubleshoot launcher behavior.
- You use a foldable or managed work phone and cannot afford to test for display or policy conflicts.
- You do not want to enable optional permissions needed for a feature you would otherwise use.
Consider another launcher only for a different priority
Microsoft Launcher is an alternative to evaluate if Microsoft services and productivity workflows are central to your setup; it is not a direct match for Nova’s configuration model. Niagara Launcher suits a minimalist, vertically organized approach rather than a traditional multi-page layout. Smart Launcher may suit someone who prefers automatic app organization to manually tuning every detail. Check each product’s current features and terms before choosing.

- Confirm the Samsung home screen is usable and that any needed shortcuts are present.
- Keep or export your Nova backup if you might reinstall or reuse the layout.
