Prioritize a bottle that washes thoroughly; Health Canada suggests a wide-neck design. If you mean water sold in a single-use bottle, that is a different question: those containers are not necessarily designed for repeated use.
First, distinguish a single-use bottle from a reusable one
A single-use bottle of water and a purpose-built reusable bottle are different products. Health Canada does not recommend reusing single-use bottles when they cannot be cleaned properly, because of potential microbiological risk. That warning concerns hygiene; it is not a finding that refilling PET bottles necessarily causes chemical poisoning. Health Canada says it found no scientific evidence that reusing PET bottles contributes harmful levels of chemicals and toxins to water. Health Canada’s guidance on bottled water containers
If you want to refill a bottle, select one designed for repeated use and make sure its opening, interior, cap, and any removable parts can be cleaned well.
How plastic, metal, and glass compare for everyday use
The evidence here does not establish a health or environmental ranking among reusable plastic, metal, and glass. Compare the practical features of the particular bottle you are considering: whether you can clean it thoroughly, how easy it is to carry, whether it is likely to break, and whether its design suits how you use it. These are purchase criteria, not evidence that one material is categorically safer or greener.

| Material | What to consider |
|---|---|
| Plastic | Check that it is made for repeated use and can be washed thoroughly. Do not assume every plastic bottle contains BPA. |
| Metal | Check that the bottle and its lid are easy to clean and practical for carrying. The evidence cited here does not show that metal is inherently healthier. |
| Glass | Consider whether its weight and breakage risk suit your routine, and whether it is easy to clean. The evidence cited here does not show that glass is inherently healthier or greener. |
What the evidence says about plastic, BPA, and microplastics
BPA depends on the type of plastic
Health Canada says most plastic bottles used to sell water in Canada are made of PET/PETE or polyethylene, which do not contain BPA. Some sport bottles and large jugs may be made of polycarbonate and may contain small amounts of BPA. So “plastic bottles contain BPA” is too broad a claim. These details describe containers used in Canada; they should not be treated as a description of every bottle sold elsewhere. Health Canada’s guidance on bottled water containers
Detection of plastic particles is not proof of harm
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says studies have detected microplastics and nanoplastics in tap and bottled water, but current scientific evidence does not demonstrate that the levels detected pose a human-health risk. Detection alone does not establish a health risk. The World Health Organization’s 2019 review discusses what is known about occurrence, potential health impacts, treatment, and remaining knowledge gaps; it does not justify claiming either proven harm or zero exposure. Water handling matters as well as the bottle
A container’s material is only one part of water safety. In the United States, commercially bottled water is regulated by the FDA. CDC says rules cover source protection, testing, processing, bottling, holding, and transport, while contamination can occur at the source, during treatment or manufacturing, in shipping or storage, or after purchase. FDA also describes contaminant standards and sanitary production requirements. These are U.S.-specific rules, not a guarantee about bottled water in every country. For Canada, Health Canada says bottled and municipal water that meet Canadian health and safety standards are considered safe. It also reports no scientific evidence that water in plastic bottles exposed to heat reaches chemical levels that pose a health risk. That narrow finding is not a reason to leave water in hot conditions when you can store it appropriately. Health Canada information on bottled water and heat

A practical way to choose
- Decide whether you need single-use or reusable. If you plan to refill it, buy a bottle made for repeated use rather than assuming a disposable water bottle is suitable.
- Choose for cleanability. Look for a wide opening and a design that lets you wash the inside, cap, and removable parts thoroughly.
- Match the bottle to your routine. Weigh portability, breakage risk, insulation needs, and ease of use for the specific bottle—not just its material label.
- Buy the one you will maintain. A bottle that is easy to clean and convenient enough to use regularly is a more useful choice than one selected on an unsupported promise of superior safety.
