The question is historical, not a confirmed current negotiation: May joined Huddersfield and is reported to be spending the 2026/27 season on loan at Doncaster Rovers.
What Charlton’s financial news changes—and what it doesn’t
In August 2026, The Guardian reported that Charlton’s US ownership group had engaged Oakwell Sports Advisory to find a buyer. The Guardian said the owners had paid £15 million for the club in 2023 and that a new takeover would make it Charlton’s fifth ownership group in six years. Those reports make the club’s finances and transfer decisions newly salient, but they do not establish that Charlton is short of cash or that a May sale would have solved a specific problem. The Guardian’s report is the basis for the ownership details.
Chairman Gavin Carter told Charlton Athletic Supporters’ Trust (CAST) in August 2026 that the club aimed to build in a “fiscally sustainable” way and recognised the scale of its losses. CAST described the men’s squad wage bill as in the Championship’s fourth quartile—its second or third lowest, according to the trust’s account. That suggests a restrained wage position relative to the division, not a precise measure of the club’s cash available for transfers. CAST’s account of Carter’s comments also says Charlton voted against the EFL’s new Squad Cost Ratio rules. The trust relayed Carter’s concerns about how historical losses would be treated and the possible consequences for relegated clubs; this is the club’s stated position, not an independent assessment of the rules.
Why a transfer fee is not the same as cash in the bank
Transfer income can help a club manage its finances, but the headline fee does not necessarily arrive all at once. CAST reported Carter’s description of standard men’s transfer-fee practice: payment in three instalments over three years, while the 5% EFL levy and VAT were due immediately on the full amount. The timing creates a liquidity gap between receipts and immediate charges; it does not tell us Charlton’s actual cash position or what any proposed fee for May would have been.

That distinction matters when judging whether a sale would have helped. A fee could be valuable over time while providing less immediate usable cash than its headline figure implies. Without a verified fee, the payment schedule in any May deal, or details of any sell-on obligations, it is impossible to calculate the net or near-term benefit.
What Charlton would have given up by selling May
May’s value was not just a potential transfer receipt. We Are Terriers reported that he recorded seven goals and seven assists in 40 appearances in all competitions for Huddersfield in 2025/26. That is evidence of a contribution in Huddersfield’s team, but not a forecast of what he would have produced for Charlton, nor proof of how he would have fit the club’s system. We Are Terriers’ report also says May joined Huddersfield from Birmingham on a three-year deal.

A responsible comparison would weigh the money offered against the cost and availability of a replacement forward, May’s likely role and output, his age and resale horizon, and any contractual clauses. The public reporting cited here does not disclose his transfer fee, wages, clauses, or Charlton’s available budget. Without those figures, it is not possible to say whether a sale would have been financially superior to keeping him or arranging another loan.
Why this is not a current Charlton–Huddersfield deal
The FA transaction register records May’s permanent transfer in at Huddersfield. It confirms his registration, but not the fee or the terms of his contract. The FA transaction register therefore supports the fact of the move, not a financial estimate of it.

We Are Terriers reports that May is due to spend the 2026/27 campaign on loan at Doncaster Rovers. That makes it important not to recast the old Charlton question as an open transfer opportunity: the cited reporting does not confirm that Charlton can buy him now or that Huddersfield are willing to sell. The loan is relevant to May’s current situation, but by itself it says nothing about a possible future fee or Charlton’s interest.

Charlton had a reasonable basis to consider a sale if Huddersfield’s interest offered meaningful value and the club could replace May’s contribution at an acceptable cost. Its stated sustainability aims make the financial side of that decision relevant. But the evidence available does not establish the offer, the net proceeds, the immediate cash benefit, or the sporting cost of losing him. Carter’s reported emphasis on attracting new investment and staying on plan also means the ownership news should not be treated as proof that the club needed to sell a particular player. In a South London Sport interview transcript, Carter said: “There is nothing new here. I think I’ve been consistent and said we will look to attract new investment to the football club to progress the plan. We are on plan.”
