CAD to USD

Should Canadians Use a Bank, Credit Card, or Currency Service to Convert CAD to USD?

The right way to convert CAD to USD depends on whether you are buying, withdrawing cash, sending money or holding a USD balance. Compare the final cost after fees.

There is no single cheapest way for every Canadian to convert CAD to USD. For everyday purchases, a credit card may be the simplest option, but check its exchange-rate method and foreign-currency charge. For cash, transfers or a USD balance, compare a bank with currency-exchange and transfer services using the final amount in USD after all fees—not just the advertised rate.

Choose based on what you need the USD for

Need Options to compare What to check
Pay for an ordinary purchase in USD Credit card; a U.S.-dollar card if you make these purchases often Issuer’s exchange-rate calculation, foreign-currency charge, and any card or account costs
Get cash Bank or currency-exchange service; card only if weighing an ATM withdrawal Exchange rate, service and ATM fees, and whether a card withdrawal is treated as a cash advance
Send money or keep a USD balance Bank or transfer/multi-currency provider Net USD delivered or available after provider, funding, wire and recipient-bank charges

The best comparison matches the same CAD amount, transaction type, funding method, destination and date. A headline rate alone does not show how much USD you will actually receive or how much CAD a purchase will ultimately cost.

Using a credit card for USD purchases

A credit card lets you pay without arranging currency in advance. But the cost can include both the exchange rate and a foreign-currency conversion charge. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) explains that issuers apply an exchange rate and may add a conversion charge; its example shows how a 2.5% charge is calculated after converting a purchase into Canadian dollars. That percentage is an illustration, not a claim that every card charges 2.5%. Read the agreement for your specific card. FCAC: How credit cards work when used in a foreign country.

When a U.S.-dollar card may fit

If you frequently buy goods or services in USD, a U.S.-dollar credit card may help you avoid foreign-currency conversion rates, according to the FCAC. Compare the whole arrangement, including annual card fees, costs to maintain or use the account, and how you will pay the bill in USD. The conversion-rate benefit by itself does not establish that the card is cheaper overall. FCAC: Choosing a credit card.

Do not treat a cash advance like a purchase

Withdrawing cash on a credit card is a different transaction from paying a merchant. The FCAC says cash-advance fees are typically higher and interest runs from the date of the advance until it is repaid. Check your card terms and ATM charges before withdrawing. Using a bank for cash, transfers or a USD account

A bank can be convenient if you already have an account there, need a linked USD account, or are making a payment through the bank. Ask for a quote for the exact transaction rather than assuming a bank is either cheaper or more expensive than another option. Include service, transfer and recipient-bank charges where applicable.

The Bank of Canada’s currency converter provides indicative daily rates and explains its publication timing; those rates are reference points, not guaranteed retail offers. For context, its lookup gives an average of 1 CAD = 0.7214 USD (1 USD = 1.3865 CAD) from 2025-09-03 through 2026-09-03. That is a historical period average, not a current rate a bank or exchange service has promised you. Bank of Canada: Currency Converter.

Using a currency-exchange or transfer service

A dedicated provider may be worth comparing when you are sending money, holding USD, or using a multi-currency card. Wise publishes Canadian pricing for its card and multi-currency account, including its stated mid-market-rate approach and separate fees. OFX publishes information for Canadian transfers and partners. These offerings make them candidates to compare, not universal price winners: pricing and terms depend on the transaction. For a transfer, compare the USD the recipient will receive after provider, funding, wire and recipient-bank charges. For a stored balance or card, check the costs and terms that apply to the way you will actually add, hold and spend the USD.

How to compare offers fairly

  1. Define the transaction. Record whether you are paying for a purchase, withdrawing cash, sending a one-time or recurring transfer, or building a USD balance.
  2. Request same-time quotes. Ask each bank or provider to quote the same CAD amount, funding method and destination. Check your card’s agreement for purchases rather than treating a transfer quote as comparable.
  3. Write down the all-in result. For a transfer, record net USD delivered after every fee. For a card purchase, record the total CAD charge, including any conversion charge. Include ATM, wire, service, funding and recipient-bank charges when they apply.
  4. Compare rate and convenience. Note the rate used and compare it with a dated benchmark such as the Bank of Canada’s indicative rate. Also weigh delivery time and the convenience of using an account or card you already have.
  5. Check terms and risks. Read the card agreement and account terms. For a cash advance, include the advance fee and interest from the transaction date in your decision.
