To request a Google Play refund, sign in to the Google Account that placed the order, open Payments & subscriptions → Budget & order history, select the purchase, and choose Report a problem. Pick the reason that fits, explain that you want a refund, and submit the form. Approval is not guaranteed, and the route can depend on what you bought, when you bought it, and where you live.
Request a refund through Google Play
- Sign in to the Google Account used for the purchase and open Google Play’s refund request instructions.
- Open the profile menu and select Payments & subscriptions → Budget & order history.
- Find the transaction and select Report a problem.
- Choose the reason that best describes what happened. Explain that you are requesting a refund, complete the form, and submit it.
You can also use Google’s refund request workflow. Google says a decision usually arrives within one day, but may take up to four days. Sending another request for the same transaction will not make the decision faster.
Choose the right route for your purchase
Google says, “Google doesn’t give refunds for most Google Play purchases.” Its decision depends on the purchase and applicable policy; submitting a request does not guarantee approval. Review Google’s policies for apps, games, in-app purchases, and subscriptions and its broader refund policy guidance.
Apps, games, and in-app purchases
For an app, game, or in-app purchase, you may be able to request a refund from Google within 48 hours, depending on the purchase details. After 48 hours, Google directs you to contact the developer to troubleshoot the issue and ask about a refund under the developer’s policy and applicable law. If the app was not delivered or does not work as expected, the developer is generally the relevant support contact.

A paid app may be eligible for a refund shortly after its first purchase. If Google refunds it, the app is uninstalled. Google allows an app or game to be returned only once; buying it again removes that option. If one transaction contains several items, Google says the entire purchase must be refunded rather than just selected items.
Subscriptions and other purchase categories
Do not assume the app and in-app purchase rules apply to every Play purchase. Google lists separate policies for categories including books, gifts, Play balance, TV, and subscriptions. Check the policy for the specific item. Hardware bought from Google Store uses the Google Store returns process, not the Google Play refund flow.

Handle accidental and unauthorized purchases differently
A friend or family member made the purchase
If someone you know accidentally bought something using your account, use the ordinary refund request route. Do not report a purchase as unauthorized if you know who made it.
You do not recognize the charge
If the charge was not made by you or anyone you know, report it to Google as unauthorized within 120 days of the transaction. Follow the steps in Google’s refund policy guidance for charges you do not recognize.

If the order is missing or the purchase has a problem
- You cannot find the order: Check other Google Accounts you may have used to make the purchase, then try the refund workflow while signed in to the account that placed the order.
- The app or purchase was not delivered or does not work as expected: Contact the app’s developer, especially if more than 48 hours have passed since an app, game, or in-app purchase.
- Your situation involves regional consumer rights: Refund eligibility can vary by location. People in the EEA or UK should consult Google’s separate guidance for purchases made on or after March 28, 2018. It covers remedies for faulty content or content that does not match its Play description, with different treatment for digital content and digital services; do not apply it automatically outside those regions.
Check a refund decision and payment status
A refund decision and the time it takes for money to reach you are separate waits. If Google approves the request, it returns the money to the original payment method. Google’s published examples below are estimates, not guarantees; processing varies by payment method and country. See Google’s refund timeline guidance for current details.
| Original payment method | Google’s published processing estimate |
|---|---|
| Credit or debit card | 3–5 business days; the card issuer may take up to 10 business days |
| Google Play balance | 1 business day; occasionally up to 3 business days |
| PayPal | 3–5 business days; sometimes up to 10 business days |
| Mobile carrier billing | Prepaid or pay-as-you-go: 1–30 business days; postpaid: one or two monthly statements |
If the credit has not appeared within the applicable estimate, check the refund status and contact the payment provider if needed. In Google Pay, Refunded means to look for the credit on the original payment method; Cancelled means the order was never charged.
